Postnatal care<br />

� Parents with substance misuse problems may need considerable help<br />

and support to cope with the transition <strong>in</strong>to parenthood. Planned<br />

support that cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>in</strong>to the postnatal period is crucial.<br />

� The postnatal period can be a stressful time for parents. For mothers<br />

who have managed to reduce their drug and alcohol use dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pregnancy, the risk of relapse to former levels of drug tak<strong>in</strong>g is high.<br />

Relapse prevention work, careful drug management and <strong>in</strong>tensive<br />

psychosocial support may be required for some time.<br />
