News from the CHAPLAIN We Are Made To Make A Difference Deep down everyone wants to make a difference. But it is difficult for students to see past their own issues, problems and distractions to see that their lives can count right now. I have been spending time in classes and Chapel services encouraging this generation of young people to look beyond themselves and to really see some of the needs within our community (local, national and global). By showing how other young people around the world have been moved by compassion and taken action, I hope to inspire our young people at Riverside Christian College to do the same. As a part of class discussions the idea that poverty is a priority has been explored and how there is such a huge need in the world around us. The problem can seem too large for us to make a difference, and we can often spend time talking about the issues but never get around to taking action. Well, this Term I have been surprised by a group of students who, after talking about the issue of poverty made a decision to take action. The Year 10 boys have all decided to take action together and sponsor a child through Compassion Australia. The very next day students began to bring in money, a dollar at a time, and by the end of 7 days they had raised enough funds to support a child for 2 months! This kind of action, born out of compassion, is something that really excites me. We are seeing young people beginning to look beyond themselves and taking action to make a difference in the life of a total stranger. “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open handed toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land” Deuteronomy 15:11 “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him Dear Children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:17‐18 Ross Harrold—Chaplain Tinana Christian Church 115 Gympie Road, Tinana Fridays 7:00pm to 9:30pm Dave Shipp Ph: 0439 661 209 Epic Youth is the explosive new youth program of Victory Church (next to St Helen’s School) that runs every Friday night of school term. Students from Year 6 upwards can come along and check out the craziest challenges, the coolest competitions, insane games, and be inspired from some amazing motivational speakers. Epic Youth is led by Graham and Amanda Waterson and a team of enthusiastic leaders. Epic Youth costs $3 each week and $2 for the bus service. Students planning on using the bus service are required to text Graham on 0457 080 864 or message him on Facebook to ensure their seat. Parents can the Epic Youth Facebook Page before the end of October for your chance to win a Station Square Gift Voucher ($100) and for up to date information about what is going on. Students in years 6 and 7 will be offered programs this week if they are interested. Chaplaincy Missions Youth Activities 6
