ART, MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTS News Nine Lessons Nine Lessons & Carols Service ALL Middle College and Senior College students will be attending our ‘Nine Lessons & Carols’ Service in St Paul’s Anglican Church at 9:15am on Friday 30 November. The Junior Choir, College Choir, staff and selected students will participate in the service. DANCE from Mrs Desiree McGann Riverside Dance Crew did a wonderful job at L.A.D Studio dance concert. Performing to over 500 audience members they stole the show, with their solos and duos. Lachlan (Hip Hop) Taila Brown (Jazz) Jenna Johnson (Jazz) performed awesome solos, and the crowd loved the fun filled routine choreographed and performed by Taylor Snell & Sheridan Long. The Riverside Dance team performed the award winning Contemporary dance –Little Suzie and the up beat Jazz routine. The team will perform again this Sunday in Hervey Bay Scarness beach (across from Beach House Hotel) in the DAY OF DANCE FESTIVAL. Come down and support the dance team. STRINGS from Ms Katie Marshall This semester has been a busy one for the Strings Department. We finished Term 3 off with a combined Maryborough Schools Music Tour with Aldridge State High School. Both schools’ string ensembles joined with the Aldridge Concert Band to create one big orchestra. We rocked the stage at three different schools with Glee Highlights, Best of Green Day, J‐Lo’s Let’s Get Loud, Grease Highlights, Santana’s Smooth and Lady Gaga’s most famous hit Born This Way. We then kicked off Term 4 in a similar fashion touring down the coast. We were musically inspired by Griffith Conservatorium of Music University students as they played a Jazz Lunchtime concert which was fantastic. We then went on to Sunshine Coast and performed for Nambour townfolk in the bustling Town Square. The following week, both Beth and Bek passed with flying colours after sitting their AMEB practical violin exam in Buderim at Matthew Flinders College. Well done girls! In the last week of October, Rebekah attended the Australian Chamber Orchestra concert in Bundaberg. After an entire day of practicing with the ACO members, the string ensemble performed Corelli’s three movement Christmas Concerto and Edvard Grieg’s entire Holberg Suite conductor‐less for their friends and family in the afternoon. The technical workshop helped the students work and play together and really listen to each other as the main principle of a chamber group is to play without a conductor. Our Strings department is now working hard towards the Year 12 Valedictory breakfast, Nine Lessons, Carols by Candlelight and the Junior Celebrates Award Night in December. The Junior Celebrates performance will showcase the Dal Segno Young Ensemble playing in unison and harmonising with different parts. The students are relatively new to this concept as they have not been exposed to this aspect of working together and performing like this before. The Awards Night will also mark our beginner strings ensemble The Stringles playing for an audience for the first time, so please give them a warm welcome. GENERAL News “Handball-A-Thon” On Friday, November 30, starting at 5pm, Riverside Christian College is holding its first “Handball‐A‐Thon.” We are raising money for Ethiopian school supplies. Years 1—5 have been sent home sponsorship forms and a letter to explain how the evening will be run. Donations are to be returned back to school by Tuesday December 4. (For more details contact Gary Bentley or the College on 4123 1031 or Gary.Bentley@riverside.qld.edu.au ) SHOUT OUT The Junior College Choir and Puppet Team have been working towards a Christmas Presentation for our senior citizens at Fair Haven. We know that the folk at Fair Haven will be so pleased to see them perform. The Choir will also perform at the Nine Lessons & Carols held at the Anglican Church Friday 30 November as well as at the Junior College Celebration night 4 December. Well done to our youngest performers ... We are inspired by your service to our local community. Although Riverside did not win this competition, we did have lots of students and parents voting for us. The winning school was Marsden State School, with a grand prize of $20,000. Runners up were: St William’s Primary School, Pilton State School, Anakie State School, Prairie State School and Pullenvale State School who won a Delonghi Espresso Coffee machine and grinder, 10 coffee mugs and coffee beans. Congratulations to all the teachers, staff, students, mums, dads, aunties, uncles, grandmas, grandads, friends and neighbours who got in on the action and voted for their school. Some brave male staff at Riverside are growing fur for this valuable fundraiser ... Please support them through sponsorship. The team name is registered as the River Mo’s http://au.movember.com/news/view/id/3181/ category/local/ Guest speakers, great food, fun activities and a girly movie plus some very handsome gentlemen that were there to wait on the girls. Make sure you get along to the next Girls Night In! Big thanks to Mrs Vicki Barrett and her band of helpers. Monies raised on the night will be donated to cancer research.
