<strong>Backman</strong> teachers<br />
win District Awards<br />
Certificates were awarded to the following teachers<br />
whose students made 70% or higher growth on the CRT<br />
test. Each teacher was recognized with a framed<br />
certificate. Most of the teachers being recognized,<br />
achieved a growth of 75% or higher on the end of year<br />
assessments during the 2010-2011 school year.<br />

Rodgers, Jan Petersen and Liz Beebe.<br />
Fourth Grade Team --- Most Outstanding Team Award<br />
The team award that recognized teachers in a grade<br />
level for exemplary achievement was given to 7<br />
elementary schools in our district and our fourth grade<br />
team was one of the award recipients. <strong>Backman</strong> had<br />
the only fourth grade team in our district that received<br />
the award! Our 4th grade team was recognized with a<br />
certificate and was given a complimentary free night<br />
stay at the Grand America Hotel along with brunch.<br />

The topics for January life skills are empathy, bullying<br />
and teasing. It is important to think about and care for<br />
others. We can show that we care about others through<br />
treating them in a kind manner. This becomes easier if<br />
we put ourselves in other’s shoes. We can think about<br />
how we would feel and how we might act if we were in<br />
a similar situation as those around us. We know that it<br />
doesn't feel good to be bullied or teased and we can<br />
remember to not hurt others when we think about how<br />
that person may be feeling as a result of our<br />
actions. During this month look at how you are treating<br />
others and try to think about how this may be affecting<br />
them in a positive way.<br />

Spotlight on Acts of kindness<br />
Warm and fuzzy -- Students are nominated by other<br />
students and/or teachers for “random acts of kindness”.<br />
Once a month two names are drawn. Those students are<br />
rewarded with a hand-made quilt. All other students<br />
who were nominated received a certificate honoring<br />
their efforts of kindness. Winners are Alfredo Hernandez<br />
in Mrs. King’s class and Juliana Mendoza in Mrs.<br />
Miranda’s class. Certificates were awarded to Karissa<br />
Coffey, Ella Beharic and Angel Alvarez.<br />

Rich & Famous<br />
This program recognizes students at the end of each<br />
trimester for meeting the following requirements:<br />
Be Responsible-90% of homework returned<br />
including reading logs<br />
Be here--no more than 2 unexcused absences<br />
Be on time-can’t be tardy more than twice<br />
Be Respectful-No office referrals<br />
4 th -6 th graders no more than two complaints<br />
about the same student in Community Council<br />
Rich and Famous students were awarded with a field<br />
