Principal’s Message
Dahlia Cordova
The month of March has been an eventful
one. Members of our faculty and
representatives of the School Community
Council and the PTA Board have been
involved in the development of our School
Improvement Plan for the upcoming 2012-
2013 school year. The School Improvement
Plan is a document highlighting specific
academic goals we will strive to achieve in
Math, Language Arts, Reading, Writing and
Science. The plan discusses how goals will
be achieved using quality materials and
instructional strategies teachers will use in
the classroom to effectively impact student
achievement. The plan supports the
continuation of all programs and services to
support students in their learning. We will
continue to provide an Extended Day
program that will provide homework help,
computer technology, a piano and guitar
music program, sports, and a student
leadership team. Some of our teachers will
continue to provide tutoring services for
students needing additional support after
school hours. We will continue to welcome
and encourage parents to be involved in
their student’s learning by participating in
March-April 2012
school related activities that each grade
level will offer throughout the upcoming
year in math, science and reading. We will
continue to welcome parents to our
classrooms to volunteer and encourage
them to be active participants in the
the decision making process. One of the
new programs we look forward to starting
is a morning Books and Breakfast program
that will give students an opportunity to
read individually, with a parent, or with a
partner before school begins. The School
Improvement Plan will be submitted to the
Salt Lake Board of Education for approval in
June. I would like to extend an invitation to
you to stop by the office to request a copy
of the plan. If you would like to meet with
me to discuss the plan, please let me know.
I would be happy to meet with you.
I would like to announce the passage of the
Backman School Uniform policy for the
2012-2013 school year. The uniform policy
will require students to wear red, navy blue
or white polo shirts or plain t-shirts that
meet the District’s Dress Code Policy in
combination with jeans, khaki pants or
black pants. Solid colors may not be worn
together. Skirts and shorts that meet the
color requirements will be acceptable.
Additional information will be provided in
the future and Backman shirts will be
available for purchase during registration.

Counselor’s Corner
Each one of us has the power to choose,
making good choices is an essential character
trait and a lifelong skill. Our students are faced
with several choices every day and each of
these choices has positive and/or negative
consequences. Everyone has the power to
make the right choices in their lives. It can be
difficult to be responsible for our own actions
however it's particularly important to do so. I
love to see our students making good choices
and treating each other with respect. Many of
our wonderful students make great choices all
the time. I encourage all of us to look at our
choices and make a choice to work towards
more positive decisions.
Sixth grade
Math Family Night
On Wednesday, February 29, 2012, the sixth grade
students enjoyed a math night with our coach Kathy
Lambert. The parents and students who attended
learned and played some math games to increase
their skills. Ms. Lambert and the sixth grade
teachers taught the group a game and then we
played. Altogether, we learned four different
games. We learned games that can be played over
and over again. The sixth grade teachers (Ms. King,
Ms. Renshaw and Ms. Peterson) joined in playing
the games also. We watched the students really get
into having fun playing math games. We hope that
our turnout for the next event will be even bigger.
Thanks to all that attended our math family night.

Spotlight on
Acts of kindness
Students are nominated by other students and/or teachers
for “random acts of kindness”. Once a month two names
are drawn. Those students are rewarded with a handmade
quilt. All other students who were nominated
received a certificate honoring their efforts of kindness.

Attendance

traveling trophy in their classroom for the week. Check out
