Power issues
It turns out that at least one part of Robe (Robe Cove on the point at the end
of Long Beach) has been receiving power that is outside the Australian Standards
range of 230 volts -6% / +10%. Ie over 253 volts. It is my understanding
that this can cause damage to appliances or blow them up and also blow
bulbs and fluorescent tubes/bulbs. If you experience any issues with power
voltage being too high or too low please contact Bill Hender at council or
email council@robe.sa.gov.au so that he can follow it up with ETSA for all effected
together.
Water quality
There have been reports to Council of poor water quality. In extreme cases
hot water is coming out black and smelling of sulphur, especially when the
water hasn’t been used for some time. If you have issues with water quality
please contact Bill at Council email council@robe.sa.gov.au so he can follow
this up with SA Water for you.

Child Care on Wheels Service
CCOWS has had a break for 2 weeks. This has given us a
chance to take care of maintenance, cleaning, servicing AND
recuperating. Children and staff need respite from each other to regain their
health and bounce.
It takes a lot of energy to listen to children so that they feel special and respected.
It takes a lot of patience to let children know that they are still valued,
while showing them ways that they can change their behaviour. It takes
a lot of thought to use positive , tactful comments so that children are encouraged
to be confident and deal with disappointment. CCOWS staff will return
with renewed energy and patience as they act as role-models for the children
in their care.
The theme for the coming National Child Protection week in September is
“Children see. Children do”. We know children soak up what’s happening
around them ‘like a sponge’. Children are fantastic mimics. Think of the behaviour
of people you know in the community, think of what we are giving our
children to imitate. Let’s try and make our influence positive.
We need rain, we are looking forward to some sun, and if we are fortunate
we’ll have both …and find rainbows.

COUNCIL NEWS
25 years of celebration!
The Robe Public Library celebrates its 25 th birthday on 11 August 2008.
The Library was opened in 1983 by Chairman of the Libraries Board of SA John Crawford as the 100 th
in South Australia. The first borrower for the town was Mrs Kathleen Browne and the library still has
her card behind the counter!
Today our customers can borrow books from other Libraries within the region and within the State.
This followed the implementation of the Public Library Automated Information Network (PLAIN) in
1990, which made for speedy borrowing of items from other libraries within the State. In 1995 the
Robe Library joined several others in the Limestone Coast Region to purchase and operate a single
library computerised circulation system called “Spydus.”
This provides an excellent service for our readers as we have a small collection. It means that we
have the borrowing capacity of over 100 libraries – fancy that!
Past Robe Librarians include Kathleen Browne, Dee Dalton-Morgan, Valerie Freeman,
Joann Rose, Keryn Stutterd and Sue Shopov.
The Robe Public Library would not be as successful without its volunteers. Our volunteers
give their free time whenever their lifestyles permit. Some put books
away, others cover books and assist when the school groups visit. Every little bit
counts and it is very appreciated.
The Friends of the Robe Library are a volunteer group that meet occasionally and have the best interest
of the library at heart. Their most famous achievement is the Annual Book Sale. The Robe community
are extremely generous in donating books, magazines, videos etc to the Friends of the Robe
Library. In turn the volunteers hold a huge book sale in the Robe Institute and the proceeds are offered
back to the Library to purchase books or certain items so the community again benefits. Great
idea!
The Robe Primary School students come regularly throughout the school term in their classes to borrow
books. They also benefit by listening to a selected book which is read by local volunteer Gert
Fawk. Gert has been reading school books to children in the Library for several years, and has struck
up some great relationships with students who say hello in the street and some even call her gran.
In a recent community survey the Robe Library was listed as one of the most important functions of
the Robe Community. We think so too!
All residents & ratepayers of the Robe District may become members of the Robe Public Library. To
join simply bring in your current ID and complete one of our application forms. It is very simple and
will bring you hours of enjoyment.
Our library offers books, CDs, Videos and DVDs, Magazine & Audio Books. We have books in Westerns,
Sagas, History, Romance, Fantasy, Horror and Murder Mysteries. We have Large Print Books,
Encyclopedia and loads on Non-Fiction.
The Public Libraries of SA also provide free internet and wireless broadband to its members (which
has also proved invaluable for our visitors) in a Statewide program aimed at getting more communities
into their libraries.
Libraries are no longer boring places to be. Come and pay us a visit. Sit in a tub chair under the window
or talk books to one of the staff members or volunteers. We are very proud of our Library and
believe that all persons of the community could benefit by becoming a member.
The Robe Visitor Information Centre & Historical Interpretation Centre are also
under the same roof, and provides to the visitor an overview of the history of
the Township.

Green Waste fees
Council will close the existing green waste receival
site and allow green waste to be disposed
of at the Robe Landfill site from 31 st July 2008.
The disposal fees for unchipped green waste at
the Robe Landfill will be the same as the current
fees for general waste.

Out and About in St Peters
Good News. The interior of our church has a new look. We
now have new power points at appropriate places for leaders.
Now we hope to repair and re paint its interior.
It was a real joy that we received the following letter last
month from a visitor to Robe:

Photography Group Meeting
Many people are awakening their interests in photography
now that the digital mode has rendered film photography
almost dead and buried. This is due largely to
• Digital images being as good (in most areas), if not
better than film
• Immediate feedback to the photographer
• Experimentation with the vast number of camera
controls with zero costs to the photographer
• Slide shows on PC’s or through a TV or Datashow,
or easy printing of images at home cheaply
• Digital manipulation of images opening endless
possibilities for the captured image.

pick you up at 8.00am and return to Robe at 5.30pm. The

10.30am and returned to your home at between
12.15 and 12.30pm.

Mount Benson Angling Club
The Club held its end of season luncheon on Saturday
12th July at the Caledonian Inn in Robe.
All office bearers were again elected for their second
consecutive term in office with Stu Hunt—President,
Ray Harris—Vice President, Lisa Falkner—Secretary,
Robert Pitt—Treasurer and Dennis Williams—Club
Captain.
The Club Champion for 2007-08 was awarded to Eric
Green and well deserved with 114 points for the season.
Andrew Warriner was runner up.
The Royal Mail junior Champion was awarded to Jordan
Harris for the second consecutive year—Well
done Jordan. Our trophy winners of Various Fish
Species will be published in Septembers Community
newsletter.
Our new 2008-09 season begins on Saturday 9th August
with Salmon being the fish sought.
Best wishes to all anglers for the coming season and
remember programs are available at the two service
stations and the Robe Butchers. Membership $20 per

Rhubarb and strawberry crumble
Serving size: Serves 4-6
Cooking time: More than 1 hour
INGREDIENTS
½ cup (110g) sugar
1/3 cup (80ml) orange juice
1 bunch rhubarb, trimmed, cut
into 5cm lengths
2 teaspoons finely grated orange rind
250g strawberries, rinsed, halved
Crumble topping
1 cup (150g) plain flour
80g butter, chopped
1/3 cup (75g) sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup (30g) desiccated coconut
METHOD
Combine sugar and orange juice in a saucepan. Stir over
medium heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil, lower
heat and add rhubarb and orange rind. Cover; simmer for
5 minutes or until tender but not mushy. Stir in the strawberries.
Place fruit in a greased ovenproof dish or six individual
ovenproof dishes.
Preheat the oven to moderate (180°C/160°C fan-forced).
Crumble topping:
Sift the flour into a bowl, rub in butter until mixture resembles
coarse breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, cinnamon and
coconut; mix well.
Sprinkle crumble topping over fruit. Place dish on an oven
tray. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Serve crumble with thick cream, vanilla ice-cream or natural
yogurt.
Suitable to freeze. Rhubarb suitable to microwave.
