Tiffany’s, Chanel, Gucci et al - Luxury from
Vienna
Lovers of luxury are in for a treat. This autumn,
New York jewelers Tiffany & Co are opening a store
on Vienna’s Kohlmarkt, joining the ranks of Loius
Vuitton, Chanel, Armani, Gucci and Akris. “The
Golden U”, as the area around Kohlmarkt, Graben
and Kärntner Strasse is called in Vienna, has been
a luxury thoroughfare since imperial days. Today,
the former purveyors to the imperial court are
witnessing something of a renaissance, as are
Vienna’s modern luxury retailers.
Gloriously Resplendent -
Advent in Vienna
During Advent, Vienna is at its most romantic
with a host of atmospheric Christmas markets.
One of the main attractions over the last two
decades has been The Magic of Advent with its
theme world in and around Vienna’s City Hall.
(Nov 18 - Dec 24, www.christkindlmarkt.at)
Just along the Ring boulevard between the
Museums of Fine Arts and Natural History, there is
another new Christmas market this year. Some 50
booths on the magnificent Maria-Theresien-Platz
will have on sale giftware and traditional
handicrafts. Austrian brass band music, gospel
choirs and music groups will add to the seasonal
atmosphere.
(Nov 29 - Dec 24, www.weihnachtsdorf.at)
Winter magic in Salzburg
© Tourismus Salzburg GmbH
The days grow shorter and cooler and the timid
rays of the winter sun shine down on the earth:
One of the year’s most romantic seasons is
approaching in Salzburg!
During the Advent season, there are two things not
to be missed in Salzburg: First, to visit one of the
irresistible Christmas Markets and secondly, to
enjoy “Advent Singing”, which can look back on
an especially long tradition in Salzburg. The most
famous and also oldest Christmas Market (held
since 1491) is located in front of the Cathedral and
on Residenz Square, (November 23 - December 24,
www.christkindlmarkt.co.at).
Well-known compositions, alpine songs and heartwarming
melodies will be heard again at the
milestone celebration “60th Anniversary of
Salzburg Advent Singing” at the Large Festival
Hall.
Winter Specials
Tourists can take advantage of a number of
packages, such as the Salzburg Card “Advent”
Package (November 30 - December 21).
The package includes two nights with a buffet
breakfast in a three, four or five-star hotel, a 48hour
Salzburg Card (free admission to all of the
attractions, discounts, free use of public transport),
tickets to Salzburg Advent Singing at the Large
Festival Hall or an Advent concert and the “Silent
Night” tour, starting at EUR 166.00 per person in a
double room.
• Special Advent tours can be booked with
Salzburg’s tourist guides
www.salzburg-guide.at
Silent Night
For visitors interested in tracing the origins of the
most popular Christmas carol, Salzburg and its
vicinity offer numerous sights, as: not only W.A.
Mozart, but also the composers of the world’s most
famous Christmas carol Silent Night were born in
Salzburg.
Culture and winter sports
- a delightful combination
The Salzburg Snow Shuttle takes skiers or winter
hikers directly to the ski lifts in Zell am See,
Flachau, Schladming, Gastein, Zauchensee or
Kitzbühel... for just 13 euros!
2006 / 2007 New Year’s Eve
- the whole city’s a stage
The very last event of Salzburg’s Calendar of Events
2006 will literally reach into the new year: Start
celebrating in the afternoon of December 31 in the
Old City until the morning hours... but make sure to
be up and awake again for the numerous New
Year’s Day Concerts!
The Mozart Year is coming to a close...
Last chance to visit the special “Viva! Mozart”
exhibition at Salzburg’s Carolino Augusteum
Museum will still be open to visitors until
January 7, 2007. (www.vivamozart.at)
However, the end of the Mozart Year is not
synonymous with the end of Mozart’s magnificent
music: Every year around Mozart’s birthday, music
buffs enjoy Salburg’s “Mozart Week” (in 2007
from January 26 to February 4).
