Brazil<br />
Visit by University <strong>of</strong> Minas Gerais<br />
At the request <strong>of</strong> the Embassy <strong>of</strong> Brazil in Canberra, the <strong>Academy</strong> hosted a delegation from the<br />
National Institute for <strong>Science</strong> and Technology: Natural Resources, Water and Biodiversity <strong>of</strong> the Federal<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Minas Gerais in Brazil at the Shine Dome on 17 September. The delegation comprised<br />
chemical engineers, biologists and geoscientists interested in learning about sustainability, water and<br />
environmental issues in Australia.<br />
<strong>Australian</strong> attendees included researchers from the <strong>Australian</strong> National University, the Cooperative<br />
Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies and representatives from DIISR. Discussions chaired by<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Martin Banwell FAA were held on issues <strong>of</strong> common interest, including potential topics for future<br />
bilateral workshops.<br />
Chile<br />
Australia-Chile Mining Workshop<br />
The <strong>Academy</strong>, in conjunction with the Embassy <strong>of</strong> Chile in Australia, organised the Australia–Chile Mining<br />
Workshop on 11 November 2009 in Adelaide.<br />
The workshop, which was funded by DIISR, was opened by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Taplin, Pro Vice-Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Adelaide, and Mr Jose Luis Balmaceda, Chilean Ambassador to Australia. Six Chilean presenters<br />
and six <strong>Australian</strong> presenters participated in the one-day event. Participants represented government<br />
agencies, research institutes and industry from both countries. As a result <strong>of</strong> the workshop, several areas <strong>of</strong><br />
potential collaboration were identified.<br />
United States <strong>of</strong> America<br />
National <strong>Science</strong> Foundation US Graduate Students Summer Program<br />
The <strong>Academy</strong> hosted 20 American PhD students selected to participate in the 2009 East Asia and Pacific<br />
Summer Institutes (EAPSI) program, run by the <strong>Academy</strong> and the US National <strong>Science</strong> Foundation.<br />
This is the sixth year that students in science and engineering have visited Australia between June and August<br />
for a period <strong>of</strong> eight weeks during the American summer to undertake research in laboratories and to initiate<br />
personal relationships with their <strong>Australian</strong> counterparts. This activity is funded under the DIISR-ISL program.<br />
