ODA Lot 1 recycle unwanted
materials for access steps
Ahead of the main construction works the site
team ensured that there was a safe access to
the work area. This approach and ethos was
singled out by the client as best practice.
All the materials used in constructing this
access route were obtained from other
Olympic Park contractor’s surplus supplies.

Children attending the Skanska stand at the Imagineering exhibition
in Coventry made promises to save energy, recycle more and use
less water.
Environment Week 2008
– Leading from the top
To coincide with World Environment Day on
5th June 2008, Skanska ran an environment
week, for the third year running, to
continually raise the importance of
environmental issues. Our Chief Executive
Officer produced a video of his thoughts on
the environment and what Skanska are doing
to help tackle the issues. He concluded by
saying ‘We must act Now for Tomorrow’.
Video Conferencing savings
Video conferencing is a requirement on all
large projects. Since our records began
significant direct savings have been made in
fuel (8,400 litres), carbon (24 tonnes), costs
(£65,100) and most importantly 1650 hours
of our employee’s time to concentrate on our
clients and our projects. All these factors
support aspects of our Sustainability Policy in
reducing emissions, safe guarding natural
resources, being more efficient in costs and
time and also ensuring our staff are not away
from their families if possible.
Eco-Driving Simulator
As part of Environment Week an eco-driving
simulator was available at Maple Cross
to show people how to drive in an
environmentally responsible way. The device
taught users how to become more fuel
efficient and safer drivers through improved
anticipation and by making simple changes
to their vehicles. With the Skanska company
car and commercial fleet being over
1200 vehicles this can make huge savings to
the environment, resource usage and
the Skanska fuel bill.
