U PDATED FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Happy New Year! Every year at
this time we celebrate Tu
Beshevat, the new year for the
tree’s! It’s fitting then that this
is also the time for reflection
and renewal as we do intensive
reviews of our current finances while at the same time
begin the planning of the shul budget for the year ahead.
Thankfully, we are once again in a more stable position
than we have been in the past as our community continues
to grow stronger and more vibrant than ever before.
The ECC continues to grow and expand and our religious
school is the strongest it’s been in many years.
This past year, Director of Education, Irit Eliav, expanded
our teaching assistant’s program to include more CBS
teens than ever before. This was made possible in part
due to the efforts of Jill Cohen & Irit, who wrote a successful
grant to the Shemanski Foundation for which we
received $5,000. This is a great reminder that we are
always on the lookout for additional and alternative
sources of funding for our programs. If you are aware of
grant opportunities, directions worth considering or
things worth pursuing, please don’t hesitate to contact,
either me, any of our professional staff or synagogue
leadership.
Additionally the Spring always brings us another annual
event we are very blessed to have, the Edwin L. Bierman
Scholar-in-Residence program; a gift to our community
for over 15 years, made possible through the generosity
of Marilyn Bierman, a long time member of Beth Shalom
and generous benefactor of our community. This year we
Update from Executive Director continued
(Continued from page 1)
are blessed to welcome Rabbi Daniel Goldfarb of the
Conservative yeshiva in Jerusalem. I hope many of you
will join us for this amazing weekend.
Edwin L. Bierman, z”l (1930-1995)
On a final note, many of us were inspired by the words of
Nigel Savage, director of the Jewish environmental
organization Hazon, who as our guest in February taught
us about the concept from Parshat Terumah of God
commanding us to build a sanctuary. “V’asu li Mikdash
v’shachanti b’tocham” (Ex: 25:8). For many of us Beth
Shalom is that sanctuary, and as a community, our
combined efforts and energies create a sacred space for
not only God to dwell, but our families, friends, children
and all who may enter. This is something I believe we
do exceptionally well as a community, but is a job that is
never done. We are strong because of you. As I
mentioned in the past, I am always searching, and open
to your thoughts and ideas on how we can continue to
improve ourselves as a community. More than your
thoughts and ideas, we are always in need of your time.
Stan Zeitz is a wonderful example of someone always
planning ahead for not only the things he does for our
community, but who will continue to do them when he’s
ready to move on. We were recently blessed with the
news that members of the CBS community have accepted
Board leadership positions in the next few years so we
are able to plan ahead.
I hope you too will be inspired and consider what your
role may be in future of our community.
Over breakfast on a recent Sunday morning, Rik showed
me Amy Dickinson’s “Ask Amy” column entitled, “Couple
feel excluded from new congregation.” In it, a woman
describes attending a synagogue to say Kaddish for her
mother. She writes, “After months and months of regular
attendance, no one from the congregation ever
approached us to introduce themselves or welcome us.
The silent treatment continued even after services, as
the congregation gathered in a more casual setting for
the Kiddush.”
This story struck a chord for Rik and me. Yes, we have
greeters at our door every Shabbat (Rik is one). Yes, we
welcome newcomers through our gabbaim and by
wearing nametags. The Board has spent much time
discussing how best to welcome people. Rabbi Borodin
regularly approaches people she doesn’t recognize, and
even leaves the bimah to greet someone.
But I still have to ask, how well would our congregation
score in a similar situation
What if someone came regularly to Beth Shalom to say
Kaddish Would you ask him to sit next to you during
services Would you invite her to join your table at
Kiddush lunch Would you be interested in their story
Or would you assume that it was up to the newcomers to
introduce themselves to the rabbi and members of the
Message from the President
congregation
CBS regulars pride themselves on belonging to a
friendly, welcoming synagogue. Yet we also have a
reputation of being cliquish. Some people find it hard to
break in to our community.
Columnist Amy Dickinson consulted with a rabbi. They
agreed that this particular congregation “doesn't quite
have its act together in terms of welcoming new
members.” They also agreed that the newcomers’
“shyness isn't helping.”
I hope that the next time you come to shul, you will see
yourself as part of our greeting team. You can wear your
nametag, say hello to someone you don't know, invite a
newcomer to join you at Kiddush lunch. Because these
things make the world of difference to someone shy who
is new to our community.
If we all could step out of our comfort zone of mostly
talking to those we already know, we would make the
Beth Shalom experience that much better for everyone.
FOOD, FOOD, FOOD
Shabbat, 3/17 from 1:15pm in the Beit Midrash
Are you interesting in talking more about food at Beth Shalom
- what we eat, what ethics govern our choices about food,
what do we want to learn about Judaism's perspectives on
food
Join us for a follow-up
conversation inspired
by Nigel Savage's
teaching on Judaism
and food, in this
month between
hamantaschen and matzah, to talk about what we would like to
be doing as a community on this topic.
Please feel free to also pass on comments and interests to
There is nothing in the world more grievous than poverty
the most terrible of sufferings. Our teachers said: All
the troubles of the world are assembled on one side and
poverty is on the other. Midrash Rabbah Exodus 31:12
As we approach the holiday of Purim the SAC would like
to repeat and expand the information from the February
Ruach. First, it is important to remind ourselves of the
four mitzvoth associated with Purim.
1) Reading the Megillah the evening of Purim and the
next day.
2) Mishloach Manot: giving gifts to at least two others.
3) Seudah: a festive meal; and,
4) Matanot L’evyonim: providing gifts to the poor.
The SAC is helping to provide you with the opportunity to
observe Matanot L’evyonim at the Erev Purim party on
Wednesday evening March 7. We have worked for many
years with Sand Point Transitional Housing and JFS, with
the latter relationship now enhanced by our partnership
with Temple Beth Am on H2R-Homeless to Renter. So
please bring your checkbook or cash, or items listed
below, to participate in the following:
• Purchase items for a Welcome Basket for a homeless
family moving into Sand Point Transitional Housing.
The SAC will have items available at a variety of
prices for you to purchase and contribute to a basket.
• Bring a broom, dustpan, mop, cleaning bucket, or
reusable shopping bag to donate to a Welcome
Basket
• Donate to H2R- Homeless to Renter. In conjunction
with Temple Beth Am, over 150 families have been
helped to move into livable housing. The goal is to
support 32 families this year.
• Bring non-perishable food items for the JFS
Foodbank.
• Purchase food gift cards for JFS Emergency Services
to distribute. Remember you benefit both the needy,
through JFS, and Beth Shalom by the card purchase.
You may also purchase cards for your own use.
The SAC is looking forward to celebrating Purim with you!
CBS has partnered with The Puget Sound Blood Center
for a number of years to host the Blood Mobile. You will
be receiving this after the February Drive, but a thanks
and Yasher Koach once again to Sheryl Kipnis for
organizing the drive, and 60 lives were saved by it. To
accommodate the Blood Center’s donation schedule when
blood is most needed, we might be switching to a
bi-annual schedule of February and August. Check the
Ruach, Shavuon, and Cybershul for donation dates in the
future.
Susan Monas, during her recent tour as president had to put in many hours on behalf of
CBS. Additionally she worked on many activities that are not publicized. One activity is
the community garden planted next door in which food is grown for the food bank. She
started this virtually alone doing all the hard work. Gradually a group of stalwarts have
joined her.
CBS has been in need of a pressure washer and so Susan has recently donated a brand
new shiny red pressure washer. Thank you Susan – you are an inspiration to us all!
F ROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION: IRIT ELIAV
Quietly, behind the scenes, our USYers have spent this
year involved in an extraordinary social action project. In
the Fall, they became pen pals with students in a special
education class in an inner city school in South King
County. For the elementary school students, these pen
pal letters were part of a lesson designed to get them
excited about reading and writing, two subjects that
traditionally present a significant challenge for these
young learners. For our USYers, this project was a chance
to make a difference in the lives of young children who
did not have the same advantages that they did.
Over the course of the year, letters have gone back and
forth every month. We exchange them at our monthly
USY board meeting. There is genuine excitement in the
air as the USYers open their letters and quickly begin
crafting their responses. They know that what they are
doing is a tremendously valuable gift for these children.
The letters are simple, just sharing information about
their lives and letting them know someone cares for
them.
Here are some sample lines from their letters:
From the Elementary School students:
- “It is so cool that you like writing too. I do not
speak Spanish fluently, either, but I do know a little
bit. I do not take it in school. I lived in a lot of
places when I was little. We would move a lot, but I
was so young then. I do not know where we were.
I do too like Sprite, but when I go to the movies I
get a large slushi. I get blueberry and I get a large
butter popcorn with a little bit of butter added. Yes,
I do love popcorn! Do you like popcorn Thank you
for writing me back.” - Your friend, a 6th grade girl
- “Wow isn’t that cool that we have the same
interests. I would have to be around your age to
watch the Notebook, but it sounds like a good movie
and I’m glad you like it. I have a lot of tests too
and 6th grade is really hard, but I really enjoy it.
You’re welcome, I’m glad your doing great in school
and really like 9th grade. We have a field trip
coming up and it is in March and I am kind of scared
to go. I don’t do a lot of walking and there is going
to bee hiking and I am a lazy person! Yes, I do
have some pets but they are just fish. Sometimes I
wish that I could have a dog or a cat or a kitten or
even a cat…but some fish because they are boring.
So um…Where are you from” Love, A 6th grade girl
From our USYers:
- “Thanks for writing back again. I love enchiladas
also, but I do not like the Giants.”
- “What’s up I like football too. Do you know what
the Superbowl is It is the championship of football,
and it is a big deal. This year the New England
Patriots are against the New York Giants. I am 14
years old. I like the Huskies too. I have been to
some basketball games. I love the snow. I really
like going sledding and having snowball fights. I
think Tom and Jerry is really funny. How old are
you What do you like to do I think that it is
really cool that you want to be a teacher. I don’t
know if I can visit, but I will try.”
- “Hey! Your letter was really fun to read. I'm so glad
you have questions for me because I would love to
answer them. I am in 9th grade and I'm 15 years
old, my birthday was on Christmas Day! I have a lot
of favorite movies but one of my favorites is "The
Notebook". What's your favorite movie Do you
have a favorite candy or food I love chocolate. Oh
and I like Willow Smith too, she is pretty cool. How
is school going for you I hope everything is well.
I'm so glad I'm getting to know you.”
- “That's so awesome that you are going to be in your
talent show. I can't pogo stick at all and I can barely
even jump rope. My favorite place to travel is Israel.
It is very hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
I don't play video games very much unless I am at a
friends house and they have XBox or some other
gaming system. I don't own any sort of gaming
system but its OK because I don't really enjoy
playing most video games too much. I like to get
outside and play sports and be active. It feels good!
What’s your favorite outdoor activity”
As you can see, these simple letters have helped connect
our teens with these students in meaningful way. This is
just another example of how extraordinary the children at
CBS really are! Hope you enjoyed reading these letters as
much as I did!
ADULT EDUCATION SPRING 2012
- שיעור פרקי אבות- Pirkei Avot
with the commentary of Me’am Lo’ez
Instructor: Yiscah Smith
Avoth (Pirkei Avot – The Ethics of the Fathers) is the one
Talmudic tract that explores the very roots of Judaism.
It has long been regarded as a rare treasure of our Torah
tradition. Pirkei Avot, as contrasted with the Talmud’s
discussions around Jewish law, centers our attention
directly on the Jew’s efforts to improve one’s relationship
with G-d and fellow human being. Of all the many
commentaries written on Avoth, perhaps the clearest is
that published in 1747 by Rabbi Yitzchak Magriso of
Constantinople , as part of the famed Me’am Lo’ez series.
His commentary was written in Ladino and was translated
into English in 1978 by David N. Barocas, a Sephardic
scholar from Rodesto, Turkey and then edited into a
contemporary idiom by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan. Rabbi
Magriso ferrets out the root meaning of the text, and
presents it in clear, unambiguous language. Stories,
parables and ethical discussions round out his commentary
to produce a clear and highly inspirational teaching.
Beth Shalom Beit Midrash moves to
Shabbat afternoons
Please join teachers Joel Goldstein and Stuart Light for
a weekly Talmud class covering the second chapter
of Bava Metzia. This class meets every Shabbat after
kiddush and will include in depth exploration of the
laws of returning lost objects. We will look not only at
the Talmud in Bava Metzia but at other connected
pieces of Talmud and the opinions of commentaries
ranging from Rashi, Tosefot, Rambam, Ramban, and
Shulchan Aruch. No Talmud experience is necessary,
nor is knowing all the terms in this class summary; all
you need is an open mind and willingness to engage
the text. Class meets after Kiddush lunch, about
1:00pm every Shabbat.
Cost: No charge.
Sunday Torah Study
The Northwest's feistiest Torah study group
wrestles with the text of the upcoming parashah every
week in a member-led medley of laughter, challenge,
and insight. High-energy participation is strongly
encouraged; no prior study is necessary.
Time: Weekly on Sunday, 10:15-11:15am
Cost: No Charge
Middot & Mitzvot
with Shirah Bell
& Joel Goldstein
Usually the 4th Shabbat
of the month,
1:15-2:30pm - Next
Discussion: March 31
Topic: Order —Seder
We’ll use Alan Morinis’
book Everyday Holiness and excerpts from the Talmud to
explore a middah and its relationship to specific mitzvot.
Shirah Bell will bring her knowledge and experience with
Mussar; Joel Goldstein will bring his knowledge and love
of Talmud and Torah and Halachah.
The soul trait of order is about the middle way. Too little
order gives birth to chaos, while at the other end of the
range, too much order ties us up in obsessive rigidity. The
best in life lies between these extremes, and we are
well-advised to seek that moderate course.
Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler, a product of the Kelm school of
Mussar, begun by Rav Simcha Sissel Ziv, provides three
reasons why we should make an effort to bring order into
our lives. First, knowing that things are well arranged
creates a feeling of inner satisfaction and confidence that
everything is under control. Another reason is even more
practical—order helps you find things when you need them
and saves you the time you would lose looking for them.
And a third reason is that many things will function only if
they are arranged correctly, like a machine that requires
every one of its parts to be in good working order, and
often in a specific sequence to run properly.
That such practical guidance emanates from a Mussar
teacher of Rabbi Dessler’s stature reveals something about
our spiritual life as the Mussar masters see it. The path to
spiritual growth they illuminate is hidden right in front of
us, right there within the ways of this world. The order you
create on your desk, in your car, and with your clothes,
your financial papers, your tools, your kitchen utensils, and
so on is not just good management, it is actually bona fide
spiritual work, nothing less. The essential value of
practicing order is that by voluntarily aligning ourselves
with an orderly way of living, we draw ourselves closer to
the divine way of being. When we are orderly, we emulate
one of God’s intrinsic characteristics, and that draws us
closer to God.
Many mitzvot are related to order. We will focus on Kashrut
and Shabbat, two that are basic to our lives and often
present challenges to our secular lives.
Lighting our way: Mussar Methods for
revealing our unique selves
In this series you will have the opportunity to explore your
character traits through a Jewish lens. The core teaching of
Mussar is that we are pure and holy, but our essence is often
obscured by extremes of emotion, desire, and bad habits.
Our work in life is to uncover the brilliant light of our soul.
How We’ll do text study of five middot (patience,
compassion, truth, responsibility, and equanimity) and learn
practical methods for change, such as journaling, meditation,
self-designed challenges, and chanting. The group process is
akin to the traditional Mussar “va’ad” in which members
share their personal reflections and help each other with their
soul work.
This series will have 7 sessions spread over 11 weeks. In the
intervening weeks each student will meet with another class
member to engage in the traditional Jewish practice of
chevruta learning.
Class starts March 1. Register ASAP by contacting
Modern Hebrew Literature
with Joel Altus and
This course will look at the themes
and aesthetics of modern Hebrew and Israeli literature.
With aspirations of creating an inspiriting involvement
with the subjects before us; we hope to provide
historical and political context, insight in to the
evolution of literary style and expressions, and above
all the characteristic ways poets and writers working
principally in Israel have addressed the human
condition as reflected in their unique circumstances. It
is a course that in a short period will be less led than
guided, hopefully eliciting everyone’s engagement,
involvement and excitement for the varied topics and
vivid personalities we will certainly encounter.
PASSOVER EVENTS AT BETH SHALOM
Do It Yourself Pot and Utensil Kashering
Sunday, April 1 from 12:30-3:00pm at Beth Shalom Kitchen (no charge)
Large kashering pots are available for CBS members to kasher their metal pots, pans, and utensils for Passover. Please
only bring cleaned metal pots (no Teflon), utensils, and silverware that have been set aside for at least 24 hours. You
will not be allowed to dip anything that still has visible chametz on it. Scouring pads will be available if you need to
do additional scrubbing. This is a do-it-yourself kashering event, drop-offs not permitted. David Frum will be on hand
for guidance.
Pre-Passover Rituals
Bedikat Chametz (Search for Chametz)
Thursday, April 5 after dark, at home
The search is usually performed the night before Pesach. It is customarily done with a candle, feather and wooden
spoon and the recitation of the blessing “Baruch atah…asher kiddeshanu…al biur chametz.” Chametz which is found
(except that which may be specifically set aside for use before Pesach), is put aside until the morning for burning. The
formula for nullification is recited after the search. (See the beginning of the Haggadah for both the blessing and the
formula).
Mechirat Chametz (The selling of the Chametz)
Friday, April 6, 10:00am
Any chametz not consumed, burned or otherwise disposed of prior to Passover must be sold to a non-Jew who will
own it during Pesach. In order to ensure compliance with the details of the law, Rabbi Borodin will act as our agent
for the sale. If you would like Rabbi Borodin to serve as your agent, you must complete the “Sale of Chametz” form
and return to Sandy Sloane by Wednesday, April 5th.
Ta’anit Bekhorim (Fast of the Firstborn), Siyum Bekhorim & Morning Minyan
Friday, April 6, 7:00-8:00am
(Minyan: 7:00-7:30am followed by Siyum led by Rabbi Borodin and bagel chametz breakfast: 7:30-8:00am.)
The fast applies to the firstborn child of a mother or a father and is usually held on Erev Pesach. It is customary, after
Shacharit, to have a siyum, completion of study of a tractate of rabbinic literature, following which there is a seudat
mitzvah, a meal accompanying the performance of a mitzvah. All firstborn in attendance are then permitted to eat.
After the completion of study and before the meal, the prayers for a siyum are recited, concluding with the expanded
Kaddish d’Rabbanan. Bagels and coffee will be served for the seudat mitzvah.
Biur Chametz (Burning of Chametz)
Friday, April 6,
EAT CHAMETZ NO LATER THAN 10:28AM ON FRIDAY, APRIL 6TH
BURN CHAMETZ NO LATER THAN 11:50AM ON FRIDAY, AT HOME
The remaining chametz is burned no later than the hour after the first third of the day. No blessing is recited.
A second, slightly modified form for the nullification of chametz is recited in the vernacular, after the chametz is
burned. (See Haggadah for the appropriate formula.)
Advance Preparation of a Flame for Yom Tov
On Yom Tov, though it is prohibited to create or extinguish a flame, it is permitted to transfer an existing flame.
On Shabbat, neither kindling a new fire nor transferring an existing fire is permitted. To allow you to light candles
for the second day of Yom Tov (Saturday night), make sure you have a fire burning before the beginning of Shabbat
that will continue to burn at least until after dark when Shabbat ends. A flame - such as a pilot light or 50-hour candle
- must be prepared before Pesach begins on Friday, April 6. This preexisting flame should last through the end of
Yom Tov on Sunday, April 8th. It is this flame that should be used to light candles on the 2nd day of Yom Tov and, if
necessary, to cook on Yom Tov. Alternatively, you can light a 24 hour candle and transfer the flame to another 24
Passover Insert
hour candle. Likewise, a flame must be prepared in advance of Yom Tov on the eve of the 7th day of Passover,
Thursday night, April 12, for use in food preparation and for lighting candles on the eve of the 8th day of Passover,
Friday night, April 13.
First And Second Day Of Pesach and Friday of Pesach
Candlelighting
On both the first and second nights of Pesach, we recite the blessings “Baruch atah...le’hadlik ner shel Yom Tov” and
“Shecheheyanu” (p. 718/303 of Siddur Sim Shalom). On the second night (Saturday, April 7th), candles should not
be lit until the end of the first day of Yom Tov. On the second night, we do not light a match but transfer the fire to
the candles from an existing flame.
Meals
Details regarding the evening festival meals, or Sedarim are fully set forth in the Haggadah. On the second night, the
Counting of the Omer (p. 237/55 of Siddur Sim Shalom) is included. Festive meals are also eaten for lunch on both
days. The morning Kiddush consists of the biblical verse beginning “Vayedaber Moshe” followed by the blessing
“Borei p’ri hagafen.” At these meals, as throughout Pesach, the blessing of haMotzi is made over matzah.
Birkat haMazon—Blessing after Meals After the meals, include “Ya’aleh v’Yavo—Our God and God of our ancestors"
(p. 762/340) in Birkat haMazon (p. 755/337) as well as the Harachaman for festivals (p. 768/343).
Seventh And Eighth Days Of Pesach
Candlelighting
On the seventh and eighth nights of Pesach, we recite the blessings “Baruch atah...le’hadlik ner Shel Yom Tov.” We
do not recite Shecheheyanu. On the eighth night (Friday, April 13th) we do not light a match but transfer the fire to
the candles from an existing flame.
Meals
There are festive meals on each night of the final two days of Pesach as lunch time. At each meal Kiddush is recited
and haMotzi is made over matzah.
Evening Meals. On the seventh and eighth nights we recite the evening festival kiddush with one insertion for
Pesach. Omit the blessing Shecheheyanu both evenings.
Afternoon Meals. The “morning” Kiddush is shorter, consisting of the biblical verse beginning “Vayedaber
Moshe—Thus Moses declared” (Lev. 23:44) followed by the blessing “Borei p’ri hagafen.”(p. 746/335).
Birkat haMazon—Blessing after Meals After the meals, include Ya’aleh v’Yavo "Our God and God of our ancestors"
(762/340) in Birkat haMazon (755/337) as well as the Harachaman for festivals (p. 768/343).
SALE OF CHAMETZ
Pesach 5772
If possible, all chametz – food not acceptable during Pesach, or materials containing such unacceptable food – should be
destroyed or given away before the holiday begins. Should this be impossible, the chametz may be stored in such a way
that we are sure not to use it during the holiday and its actual ownership transferred to a non-Jew until the holiday ends.
The following contract must be filled out and given to Sandy Sloane or be received by
mail at the synagogue before Wednesday, April 5th, 4:00pm.
NO LATE CONTRACTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
It is traditional to enclose tzedakah for the purpose of Maot Hittim (food distribution for Pesach). Your contributions will
go to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund and will be used for Maot Hittim. These funds will be used to support the kosher
