FURNISHINGS Dorm rooms include a twin
bed, desks, chairs, and in California a lockable
cabinet. Lockboxes are available for purchase at
the Arizona campus. There is separate locked
storage space for large suitcases and trunks that
cannot be kept in the dorm room. A recreation
room or living room is near or in each dorm, with
TVs, DVD/VCRs, and computer connections.
GYM, SHOPS, POOL You can get
permission from your dorm parent to use the
gym, pool, or work in shops, or study in the
library or study hall, before bedtime. Beaver
Creek students must have a group of three and
get permission from a teacher before swimming.
These privileges will be taken away if they are
abused.
HAZARDS As in most homes and
businesses, our janitors and maintenance people
use some cleaners, paints, and materials that
contain chemicals dangerous to health. The
school community is warned that these chemicals
are used, and that these chemicals may cause
cancer or other problems and must be avoided.
Our campus has been inspected for asbestos and
lead hazards and are clear of these problems.
Safety information and our management plan for
hazards are available through the directors of
operations at either campus. Report any
hazards or questions to them.
INSPECTIONS Dorm supervisors and other
school officials have the right to check dorms and
personal belongings. Governmental officials,
such as police and fire, can also inspect, and can
use trained dogs with school permission.
Southwestern will not tolerate drugs, weapons,
alcohol, or other illegal materials on campus.
The school may inspect student areas and rooms
on occasion to protect our community. You can
keep your property locked, but you must open
any boxes or locked areas if a supervisor
requests this. We suggest you keep an extra
key or the combination to a lock with your dorm
parent, in case the original is lost or forgotten.
You will be asked to be present during any
inspection if this is practical.
LAUNDRY Coin-operated washing machines
and dryers are available. You can ask for
quarters as part of your weekly cash request. If
you need help in operating them, or in sorting
clothes - separating white, colored, and special
clothes – ask your dorm parent. Please keep
laundry rooms clean for other users, and keep
lint from the filters. If there is any problem with
a machine, please tell the Business Office so they
can be serviced by the company owning them.
LEAVING CAMPUS All students must sign out
any time before leaving campus for any reason.
Sign back in upon returning. It is important that
we know where you are. During the day, the
sign-out book is in the Student Office; after
hours, sign out with dorm parents. If leaving
with parents or friends, an adult must go with
you to sign out and must show identification to a
school staff member if requested. These
procedures are very important for your safety.
MAIL Student mail and faxes will be passed
out each day during the afternoon assembly. If
you want to mail letters, put them in the slot of
the Student Office door at either campus. We
will weigh and put stamps on for you, but be
sure your own name is on the letter. When
mailing to other countries, write the name of the
country in English at the bottom right corner of
the envelope (the rest of the address may be in
another language).
MATTRESS COVERS State laws require you
to cover your mattress with a plastic or cloth
cover. These are available at the student store,
or may be purchased at drug or discount stores.
See your dorm parent if you need a cover.
PETS Sorry, no pets. All are forbidden by the
health department. No animals may be indoors.
RECREATION ROOMS You may use the
various dormitory TV and recreation rooms
unless a behavior problem has caused the
supervisors to close one temporarily. Each user
is always responsible for cleaning up afterwards.
RELIGIOUS SERVICES If you wish to attend
religious services off campus, ask at the Student
Office. Churches, temples, and mosques of all
faiths are available in close driving range to the
San Marino Campus. Most faiths also hold
services near the Beaver Creek Campus. Talk
with your dorm parent to find out how you can
attend the services of your choice.
Southwestern will help with the Ramadan fast
Muslim students and the Seder observance for
Jewish students. Please let the Student Office
know of your interest.
SICKNESSES When you are sick, inform your
dorm parent or the Student Office. At the Ranch
Campus, check with the Dean or the duty
teacher. They will administer proper treatment
or advice for minor illness. If it is serious, they
will help you get to a doctor or hospital. If you
are excused from classes because you are not
well, you need bed rest without electronics.
