PRIVILEGES AND PENALTIES
Students who contribute to the school
community, who behave and help the group,
receive special privileges and rewards.
Students who disturb, disrupt, and keep others
from learning must put something back to
replace what they hurt. This is the basis of our
system of commendations and penalties.
You are expected to care for others as well as
yourself, to be on time, neatly dressed, and
interested in learning. Our system of reminders
is to help you develop the strength to discipline
yourself.
Faculty, staff, and proctors will assign penalties
for breaking rules, and will explain the reasons
for any penalties. These same people will give
plus points for the good things you do.
There are three levels to our discipline system -
the first level is points, the second level is
detentions, and the third level is suspensions
or expulsions.
LEVEL ONE - POINTS
To handle matters of a minor nature, the point
system gives rewards for good behavior and
punishments for such things as lateness,
untidiness, and minor misconduct.
Positive points are awarded for behavior above
that which is expected, personal bests, kindness
to others, and any behavior which shows
initiative in helping build a better school
community.
Negative points are given by teachers or proctors
for such actions as being tardy (one point for
each five minutes), coming to class without
books or materials, being untidy or leaving a
mess (one or two), spitting, chewing gum or
eating in class (two), disturbing a class (one or
two), minor dress code violations such as outdoor
wear in class (two), and “public display of
affection” (anything beyond hand-holding that
calls attention to itself, one or two points).
Negative points will be worked off at the rate of
four per hour, unless the job is extremely
unpleasant, when more credit may be awarded
by the supervisor. Points are worked off after
school hours and the work is supervised.
Negative points remaining at the end of the week
become detentions.
LEVEL TWO - DETENTIONS
A detention is given by staff members (but not
Proctors) for more serious issues. Each
detention means one hour of writing or copying
materials related to the offense, or one hour of
physical work, at the discretion of the supervisor.
Detention will be served after P. E. class, starting
at 4:30. Detentions are also served on
weekends. On receiving a detention, a student
must surrender the blue card. All privileges such
as weekend trips will be forfeited until the
detention is served.
Detention hours are given for such things as
being with a smoker, dress code violations,
cutting a class (two penalties); cutting an
appointment or meal (one penalty), being up
after curfew, being out of the area*, hazing, or
excess points at the end of the week.
*Being out of the area means being in places
where students do not belong. Classrooms,
study halls, rest rooms, play fields, and picnic
table areas are acceptable areas during the
normal class day. Being behind the gym,
chapel, storage buildings; in dorms other than
your own, or in classrooms after hours without
permission, is not acceptable and out of the area.
In San Marino, being east of the outdoor
basketball court, around the gardens or
driveway of Veronda Place, or on the side of
Founders’ Hall dorms, is considered being out of
the area and is punishable with detentions.
At Beaver Creek, being outside the circle of
buildings is generally considered out of the area.

Notification of detentions earned will be
communicated to parents, and also kept on
permanent student records.
LEVEL THREE - SUSPENSIONS
Other more serious offenses such as vandalism,
fighting, smoking, major cheating or hazing,
theft, opposite sex in dorms or bathrooms, off
campus without permission, or having illegal
substances or materials, will result in suspension
or expulsion from Southwestern at the
recommendation of the disciplinary committee
and review of the committee’s recommendations
by the headmaster. Detection canines visit
campus to search for any illegal drugs, weapons,
or alcohol, in order to safeguard our learning
environment.
