ARTS SOCIETY
"ART IS MAN'S NATURE; NATURE IS GOD'S ART"
Southwestern Arts Society – S.A.S. -
has served as our link to the arts, such as
Vocal and Instrumental Music, Stand-up
Comedy, Creative Composition, Theater,
Martial Arts, Dance, Poetry, Architecture,
Movies, and the Visual Arts. Our big event
is ArtsFest each spring. All students with
an appreciation for arts are encouraged to
join.
S.A.S. is known for its field trips to plays,
concerts, dance, and museums. We hold oncampus
programs such as the Chess Club
and Movie Nights, and annual events such
as Poetry Night and Cabaret Talent
Show. We cover many branches of the arts
and are looking for more innovative options.
S.A.S. brings the arts to Southwestern and
gives us outlets to express ourselves
creatively, to “pick up the key” to the
meanings of our lives by drawing upon
memory. The board is committed to
broadening the role of arts in our school.
“SEEDS” is Southwestern’s creative
magazine, encouraging student creativity by
publishing their best poetry, short stories,
art, and photography. Working on our
magazine is a great way to interact, express
feelings, and get to know each other better.
S.A.S. President for 2010-2011 is JUAN
PESQUERA. The vice president is Zak
Fennie. Publicity person for events is
Chelsea Han. James Xu is our Events
Planner, and Andrew Chen runs the Chess
Club. William Li is in charge of our display
case. Alan Pierpoint is faculty advisor.
Art is a talent we all have inside us, in one
form or another. SAS is here to add to your
enjoyment by providing opportunities to
relax and expand your imagination. Our
board members and I want to enrich the
lives of Southwestern students. Let us
know where your interests lie.

SOUTHWESTERN
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATES
“ NATURE IS PAINTING FOR US”
S.E.A. - Southwestern Environmental
Associates - helps lead Southwestern
students to a better understanding and
safeguarding of nature. S.E.A. invites all
students who enjoy nature to join the club.
We organize star-gazing nights where
telescopes are set up. We work to save
water through intelligent planting and
watering, to build sustainable gardening and
mulching, and to recycle and reuse.
The Hikers, part of S.E.A., start with short
treks into the San Gabriel Mountains behind
our main campus, climbing to the “Bridge to
Nowhere” and to Mt. Wilson observatory in
the moonlight, and build to glorious days at
Anza-Borrego Desert when the wildflowers
are in bloom, and at Channel Islands
National Park. Hikers record their miles in
order to join the special overnight treks.
S.E.A. officers for 2010-2011 include VLAD
IBRAGIMOV, president. Risa Yamanaka
and Billy Zhang are vice presidents.
Charlie Mathias is secretary, and Jason
Shen is the treasurer. Deborah Kaufeldt-
Boardman is Feature Editor. Mr. Charles
Herbst is the faculty advisor and hike leader.
Vlad writes: S.E.A. gives an opportunity to
the students of Southwestern to explore the
surrounding environments of Southern California
and Northern Arizona. With our help,
students are able to discover more of the
environment and learn how to protect it.
S.E.A. provides various activities in addition
to the hikes and camping trips. Whale
watching has been popular in past years.
The club encourages students to participate
in tree planting and river cleanups. We also
distribute reusable water bottles and work
to eliminate the environmental problems of
plastics on campus and in our trash. With
these activities, students learn as they are
entertained by our activities.
