Whole <strong>School</strong> News The National Rope Championships The National Rope Championships were held from 22 to 25 June at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. This competition involved 400 competitors from around Australia and a group from Singapore in various speed and freestyle events. Six students represented our school at this competition. They were Nathan Chang (Yr 9), Jessica Payne (Yr 8), Josephine Anugerah (Yr 8), Georgia Clark (Yr 6), Lydia Chang (Yr 4) and Jacqueline Maskito (Yr 4). Last year, at our first Nationals, these same students placed in the top half of their age group but were awarded no medals. This year every student gained either a Silver or Gold medal. Our students won the following: Nathan Chang and Jessica Payne: Silver for their pairs freestyle routine (like a gymnastics floor routine using dance, gymnastics and aerobic skills whilst skipping with a rope). Josephine Anugerah and Georgia Clark: Silver for their Pairs 30 second Double Under speed relay. Lydia Chang and Jacqueline Maskito: Gold for their Pairs 30 second speed relay, Gold for their Pairs 30 second Double Under speed relay and Gold as the overall 10 and under Pairs Champions. These students trained long and hard to achieve these results at this level of competition. Coaches from other teams complimented our students, not only on their success this year, but their improvement as well. The judges also complimented our students on their attitudes and said that no matter what happened they always had smiles on their faces. I am so proud of their efforts, sportsmanship and grace. They are a fantastic group to work with and their families are so supportive. Everyone was so pleased, not just to win medals this year, but because we stepped up and improved with everyone achieving PB’s for all events. Thank you to the school community for your support of the team. It does make a difference. Mrs Karen Binns Infants Welcome back to Infants for Term 3. This will be a very busy and eventful term. We have begun to introduce interactive white boards to the classrooms, with the first two being placed in 1G and 2CL. The other classes will receive theirs in due time. We have also begun trialling Mathletics (an interactive mathematics program) with a group of Year 2 children. We hope to extend this once we have established the benefits it provides for our students. Book Parade - A warm invitation is extended to family and friends to attend our Book Parade on Tuesday 14 August 2012. Notes have gone home informing parents of the timetable and Sausage Sizzle lunch on the day. Children will come to school dressed as a book character from a book in the Infants Library. If you need inspiration, Mrs Brown will have a box of books and suggestions near the Library for you to get some ideas for the costumes.
Infants Sport Hockey We are holding hockey training before school this term and the days and times will be advised as soon as we have locked them in. Tennis Years 1 and 2 will be receiving 4 weeks of tennis instruction this Term. We look forward to this initiative by Mr Archer and thank him for all he does for sports in the Infants Department. Swimming Swimming at Infants starts on Monday 10 September, running each day until Friday 21 September. Children are required to wear swimmers (a one piece costume for girls) with a cap and goggles. All children’s clothing, towels, etc, are to be clearly marked with their name to avoid confusion and loss of items. Father’s Day Breakfast A reminder to all dads, uncles and granddads to keep the morning of Tuesday 28 August free for our Father’s Day Breakfast. Breakfast will be served from 7.30am. Further information will be sent home shortly. Wet Weather A reminder that in wet weather the children proceed straight to the Infants Library and wait there until directed by the teacher on duty. Vanuatu We have seen photos of the children in Vanuatu wearing the thongs that our children donated. It was lovely to see the recipients of the thongs. Thank you to the <strong>St</strong>aff and Year 10 students who went on our behalf and delivered them. Upcoming Excursions in Term 3 Aquarium for Kindergarten, date to be advised Parents’ Prayer Meeting In the next couple of weeks a prayer meeting will commence to pray for staff, students and their families (start date to be confirmed). This will be held in the LIbrary every second Friday (in the odd weeks – just work out if that’s the week your child has news or the other week!). The meeting will start just after 9am (when the children have gone into class) until 9.30am. Please join us (you don’t have to pray out loud) as we thank God for what He is doing at our school and ask Him to continue to bless us. By Andreas Adamou Year 2 travelled to Wollongong to discover stuff. On our arrival we excitedly walked into the building. First we went to a bubble and balloon show and learnt that bubbles are terribly lazy. After that we spread out and went upstairs. Upstairs we saw a robotic dinosaur and after that I saw 6000 bees. They were alive and had made seven kinds of honey. We also saw a robotic elephant and eventually we went into the movie theatre to see a movie called “The Secret of the Cardboard Rocket”. I really enjoyed our whole day. By Aaron Kasper Year 2 travelled to Wollongong to visit the Planetarium. On our arrival we entered the building. First we saw the bubbles and balloons show which was exciting. Next we used the handson equipment, where I learnt about conveyor belts. Lastly we saw a show about stars and planets. I had a really cool day. By Paul McKay Year 2 travelled to Wollongong to visit the Planetarium. On our arrival we excitedly walked inside. First we went to the bubble and balloon show and learnt that bubbles are lazy. Following that we slowly walked upstairs and fiddled with the hands-on equipment before we had recess. I really enjoyed the water tornado. The day was amazing but sadly we had to go home.
