Although it was a chilly start to the first day back, the excitement of the children greeting their friends and sharing holiday stories gave a warm, inviting atmosphere to Junior School. The “Term At A Glance” highlights what is happening in your child’s school life. These events include our annual Writer’s Workshop, Book Week, optional ICAS and Westpac Bank Mathematics Competitions, Maths Olympiad, Athletics Carnivals, Gala Day, Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off, the Father/Child Big Day Out and numerous excursions. The focus of our learning in Literacy will be Creative Writing. We are looking forward to teaching specific skills and guiding students through creating their own published stories which we would like to share with you towards the end of this term. To give students the experience of an accomplished writer, Ursula Dubosarsky has been invited to conduct our own “Writers’ Workshop”. She has won many Premier’s Literary Awards for such books as “The Return of the Word Spy” and “The Terrible Plop”. As each child sees and hears Ursula explore her world of words we are hoping to encourage them to grow in confidence and competency as thinkers, writers and readers. Most students are participating in a Reading program which explicitly teaches a method to understand the meaning of a passage, using the “Here, Hidden and Head” strategy. The children use clue words to locate key facts and practice writing sentence answers. The ongoing mini tests appear encouraging, although the formal post test will be given at the end of this term along with assessments to determine reading and spelling ages for each child. The challenge is to ensure the transfer of the knowledge of the reading skills across other areas of study. Whether in Reading or Writing, it is the desire of the Junior School to explicitly teach and deeply inspire each child to hear, feel, see and assess the power of words. The well known educational thinker and writer on multiple intelligences, Howard Gardner, in his latest work has identified five ‘minds’, one of which is the Synthesising mind. Given the explosion of words available to our students, they need to be taught how to deal with this volume and complexity of information. Junior School aims to equip students with specific skills in both Reading and Writing to develop this synthesising mind. More than that, it is our hope that each child will be challenged to develop a critical understanding of what is written or illustrated so that they will be able to discern accurately whether what they read is in accordance with God’s Word. Junior School ATTENTION PARENTS OF YEAR 5 STUDENTS Welcome to Semester 2. Your child is embarking on the final stage of their journey in Junior School. This stage involves learning new areas of information, honing Literacy and Mathematical skills, experiencing life on the Gold Fields, participating in the Transition Camp and increasing their use of technology. I view this term as a time to strengthen each child’s core skills in preparation for the demands of learning in Middle School. Mrs Back has been granted school approved leave for Weeks 1 to 3 of this term. Mrs Sandra Kasper will be taking 5B and the appropriate groups. Mrs Kasper is an experienced, highly qualified teacher, a marker for NAPLAN and a valued member of our school community. Thank you for your prayerful support. Personification - Loneliness Personify - to make something without feelings feel emotions like a human Loneliness was sweeping through the land. He stopped at a group of close friends. He wore a hood that hid his face. He touched one of them and whispered in a raspy voice “she’s cruel to you behind your back”. Suddenly the girl burst into bitter tears. “How could you” she yelled. Meanwhile, Loneliness was already speaking to the next girl. This time he said “she is a liar, she’s the one being mean. You’ve done nothing wrong”. The girl turned cold “I’ve done nothing you nasty beast”. She screamed. The two girls ran off in different directions knowing that they would hate and never see each other for the rest of their lives. Loneliness was never satisfied so he went off in search of another friendship. ST GEORGE GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL VICTORIA ST KOGARAH CLOSING DATE FRIDAY 17 AUGUST 2012 On Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September 2012 the 62nd NSW Talent Enrichment Weekend MindQuest will be held for primary students from Years 1-6. These include gifted and talented students, gifted underachievers and students with above average ability with a special interest. Students will have an opportunity to participate in over 37 exciting, fast paced courses in the two day program. They include courses in chemistry, earth sciences, drama, lego robotics, art and much, much more. Many of these highly successful courses have been run in the past and students’ evaluations suggest that they have been challenged and enriched by the experience. The cost of the weekend is $160 (including GST). Please contact Mrs Godfrey for brochures. Esther Chung and Aisley Budhihardjo Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival Students from Years 3-6 (and some Year 2’s turning 8) gathered at Sylvania Waters Athletic Track on Friday 20 July for the annual Athletics Carnival. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day and students made the most of the fine weather with high levels of participation throughout the day. My sincere thanks go to all the hard working parents who volunteered to help out on the day. Your support was very much appreciated. I would also like to thank Mr Munro and the Year 9 PASS students who assisted in many areas at the carnival. All our volunteer helpers made the day the success that it was. The winning house for the 2012 Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival was BLUE. Congratulations! The CSSA Zone Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 2 August at The Crest Athletics Centre, Bass Hill.
