26 27 Vulkollan ® polyurethane elastomers: flexibility for innovative design ideas New materials often provide a springboard for innovative designs. A good example of this is Vulkollan from Bayer, which opens the door to innovative designs in the chassis and the steering system. Manufacturing method: � Casting Polyurethane elastomers based on Desmodur ® 15 and polyester have the following characteristics: � Resistance to oil and grease � Wear resistance � Elasticity � Flexibility over a wide temperature range � Ease of assembly � Freedom from maintenance � Lightweight and space-saving � Resistance to dynamic loads � Scope for innovative design Polyurethane elastomers have proved to be particularly effective in: � Damping and spring elements � Gaskets � Step bearings � Bearing bushings Progressive helper springs made of cellular Vulkollan ® are widely used today in modern suspension strut designs.
Recycling and reuse All polyurethane materials can be reused, either by mechanical or chemical recycling or by thermal treatment with recovery of the energy content. The main processes are: � Comminution of large quantities of foam remnants into foam flocks which are then processed into rebonded foam articles, e. g. carpet backings, sound insulators, insulating mats. � Polyurethanes can be finely ground and added to one of the raw material components as a filler. This also makes recycling in the original application possible, e. g. in moulded foam for seat cushions and - in the case of RIM technology - in body parts. � Comminuted and ground polyurethanes are mixed with polyurethane binders and compression moulded or cast in moulds, for example, rear-window shelves or workbench tops. 28 29 � Another recycling technique is glycolysis - the liquefaction of polyurethanes with glycols. The resultant recyclate polyols are mainly processed into rigid foam and structural components reinforced with glass fibre mats (Baydur ® STR). � The techniques of pyrolysis,hydrogenation and synthesis gas production yield raw materials for the petrochemical industry. � Polyurethane waste can be used as a reducing agent in the smelting of iron ore. � Incineration with energy recovery. The exhaust gas emissions from the thermal recycling of polyurethanes in modern plants have been shown to be safe and within the statutory tolerance limits. Ecological and economic factors determine the choice of material recycling process or incineration with energy recovery. The method and scope of disassembly of the plastic components must be geared to the recycling processes used and the available marketing options. Even if mechanical and chemical recycling (e.g. glycolysis) are used extensively, it will still be necessary to dispose of some of the plastics at the end of their useful life. Ultimately, petrochemical feedstock recovery or incineration with recovery of the energy content are the only methods capable of easing the burden on available landfill space.
