Media Converters.<br />

It seems simple enough: To convert<br />

between different media, you need a<br />

media converter. However, it's not as<br />

simple as that. There are three different<br />

types of media converters, and you need<br />

to find the right type for your scenario and<br />

application.<br />

Switched Media Converter<br />

The most common type of media<br />

converter is the switched media converter.<br />

These are economical, easy to build and<br />

simple to install. A switched media<br />

converter uses standard chipsets for<br />

switches, which enables the converter to<br />

run different speeds. Switched media<br />

converters autosense 10-, 100- or 1000-<br />

Mbps speeds.<br />

However, many things you encounter<br />

with a switch also apply to a switched<br />

media converter. Not all Ethernet frames<br />

(packets) pass through the switched media<br />

converter and you may experience some<br />

latency.<br />

If you need a media converter for your<br />

office network — for internet, e-mail,<br />

printing and file sharing — you can't go<br />

wrong with a switched media converter.<br />

Transparent Media Converter<br />

These media converters are fully<br />

transparent within their designated<br />

protocol. So any frame coming in on "Side<br />

A" gets converted and is output on "Side<br />

B" in the same manner. Because most<br />

media converters are generally converting<br />

optical to copper Ethernet, only a<br />

conversion from electrical to<br />

opto-electronic is done.<br />

Unfortunately, these media converters<br />

need to run on the same speed on both<br />

sides. This applies to the bandwidth (10,<br />

100 or 1000 Mbps) and the half-/fullduplex<br />

setting.<br />

Protocol-transparent Media Converter<br />

The other main use of a media<br />

converter is to change between singlemode<br />

and multimode. In this case, a<br />

protocol-transparent media converter that<br />

works transparently and is independent<br />

from the can work Ethernet, Token Ring,<br />

ATM and Fibre Channel because they just<br />

adopt the wavelength. They're available<br />

for different speeds.<br />

Why is this so important to know<br />

Today, IP networks are used for more<br />

than just sending e-mail, accessing the<br />

Internet and print servers. Special devices<br />

exist for transferring audio, video, KVM,<br />

telephony and other services. Because not<br />

all these devices work with standard TCP/IP<br />

communication at standard frame length,<br />

you could experience unexpected results.<br />

For example, audio data transferred by<br />

UDP broadcast traffic have frames blocked<br />

by switches where "Broadcast Storm<br />

Protection" is enabled. And there are<br />

proprietary systems sending very big<br />

frames (Jumbo frames), which normal<br />

switched media converters block as well.<br />

Switched media converters also produce<br />

latency on your IP network, although one<br />

switched media converter will not do any<br />

harm. However, having more than one in<br />

your IP network can degrade your<br />

roundtrip time.<br />

Switched media converters are easy and<br />

economical, but make sure they're best for<br />

your applications.<br />

Advantages of Media Converters<br />

Cost Comparison<br />

Fibre Ethernet Switches can be very expensive. At the end of<br />

2009, a 16 port branded fibre switch (low end) was costing upwards<br />

of £4K, whilst a branded Gigabit Fibre Switch module for a core<br />

switch, was typically costing just under £10K. <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Box</strong> Media<br />

Converters allow you to use existing fully functioned twisted pair<br />

switches and convert to fibre externally. This option can also<br />

provide flexibility and future proofing in one easy to install<br />

solution, at the same time as dramatically reducing the costs<br />

involved.<br />

A fully functioned 16 port twisted pair Gigabit Ethernet switch<br />

can cost as little as £150 depending upon model, and combined<br />

with a 16 port Gigabit media conversion chassis, a total solution of<br />

under £3.5K provides all the functionality required. But in<br />

addition, if the type of cable changes again, i.e. from a MultiMode<br />

cable to a Single-Mode cable, the chassis, power supply and any<br />

management system can be kept and only the actual cards will<br />

need to be replaced. A lot of the cards provide 10/100/1000Mbps<br />

connectivity on the twisted pair port and enable you to begin<br />

converting at either 10 or 100Mbps, yet provide all the future<br />

proofing you need to take you right up to 1 Gigabit to the<br />

desktop. This saves having to buy a 10/100Mbps fibre media<br />

converter now, and replace it in a year or two with a gigabit<br />

version. So if you are using a 10/100 or 100Mbps switch currently,<br />

but are thinking of moving to Gigabit later on, purchasing a <strong>Black</strong><br />

<strong>Box</strong> 10/100/1000Mbps Media Converter system will provide all the<br />

connectivity you require today and tomorrow.<br />

Some of our latest Media Converters use SFP sockets for the<br />

fibre port. The advantages of SFP sockets is that they are another<br />

way of providing future proofing. SFP modules are very convenient<br />

and easy to use and also very easy to replace, without the expense<br />

of replacing the entire switch. And SFP’s can be replaced one port<br />

at a time, reducing the need to buy new switches just because a<br />

few ports are now using fibre.<br />

same functionality as SFP’s but provide the 10Gigabit speeds<br />

required for today’s high speed core networks.<br />

In the year 1830, "The Rocket" was the<br />

fastest train, travelling between Liverpool<br />

and Manchester at the speed of 47km/h.<br />

At that time, people thought that nobody<br />

would ever have the need to travel faster<br />

than 50 km/h. In the year 1983 ,the official<br />

IEEE standard for Ethernet running on<br />

BNC/Coax was released. The speed was<br />

10Mbps half-duplex. At that time nobody<br />

was arguing about bandwidth as they<br />

weren't transmitting music or video.<br />

But technology always moves on. What<br />

seemed impossible yesterday is normal<br />

today. When sending music, video and<br />

more across the network, you can never<br />

have enough bandwidth.<br />

The LBG6000 and LBG9000 Series<br />

switches provide you with 10Gb Ethernet<br />

technology. <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Box</strong> supports fibre optic<br />

and copper interfaces that are available<br />

and reliable. For copper, use the CX4<br />

interface for connecting servers or for<br />

interconnecting switches. Because the<br />

distance is very limited, you should use<br />

fibre optic cabling for your long-distance<br />

connections.<br />

You may find RJ-45 interfaces for 10Gb<br />

equipment, but these require special<br />

cabling and connectors. 10Gb on RJ-45<br />

uses a line encoding scheme. You may also<br />

find equipment with XENAPAK modules,<br />

but these are already phased out.<br />

Currently the XFP module type is the<br />

standard for connecting 10Gb to fibre. The<br />

maximum distance you can cover depends<br />

on the fibre type installed. Getting into<br />

10Gb technology begs the question, 'What<br />

am I going to do' Normally you go for<br />

new switches to have more backbone and<br />

aggregation bandwidth. Installing a 10Gb<br />

Network Interface Card into your file or<br />

application server may also be necessary to<br />

benefit from your investment.<br />

For a complete enterprise system, you<br />

may need (1) LBG9900AE as the core switch<br />

with the required number of XFPs and<br />

several LBG6550AE for the transmitters<br />

and receivers.<br />

Why media converters need SNMP.<br />

The number of Ethernet switches and<br />

fibre optic segments being added to<br />

Ethernet networks keeps increasing. And<br />

as long as most Ethernet switches are only<br />

available with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and<br />

1000 Mbps interfaces, media converters<br />

will remain in demand.<br />

Until now, a failure on the network<br />

could go unnoticed. Once a failure was<br />

detected, it could take a long time to<br />

isolate it, especially if a technician had to<br />

be sent to the site. But media converters<br />

with SNMP eliminate some of the<br />

guesswork.<br />

With SNMP management, the IS<br />

manager can detect a failure, isolate it to a<br />

specific port, and determine what<br />

hardware is required to repair it. A<br />

technician can then be sent directly to the<br />

right place to fix faulty hardware or repair<br />

a broken cable.<br />

SNMP management enables you to set<br />

up alarms or traps when a link is down.<br />

You can turn features on and off from a<br />

Compact Media Converters work transparently, which means<br />

there is no extra filtering that could cause troubleshooting features<br />

not to work consistently. What comes in one side comes out the<br />

other side.<br />

FiberAlert and LinkLoss<br />

LinkLoss and FiberAlert automatically notify you of "silent<br />

failures" on the fibre side. These media converters link down the<br />

copper port when the fibre link is down and vice versa. This allows<br />

you to see from the other side what happened. Otherwise, the link<br />

of your switch is up, but no data can get through because the fibre<br />

line is broken.<br />

With duplex fibre links, you always have one transmit fibre and<br />

one receive fibre. The fibre port can only recognise that the link is<br />

OK when there is no data coming in on the receiving fibre — a<br />

broken transmit fibre cannot be detected. With FiberAlert, you will<br />

get that information.<br />

Having these features is critical if you need to monitor your links<br />

and/or you are running trunked ports on your fibre links driven by<br />

media converters.<br />

send data on a fibre segment. They still require two strands of<br />

glass to send transmit and receive signals for fibre media<br />

communications. Wouldn't it be better to combine these two<br />

logical communication paths within one strand<br />

That's exactly what single-strand fibre conversion does. It<br />

compresses the transmit and receive wavelengths into one<br />

single-mode fibre strand.<br />

The conversion is done with Wavelength Division Multiplexing<br />

(WDM) technology. WDM technology increases the informationcarrying<br />

capacity of optical fibre by transmitting two or more<br />

signals simultaneously at different wavelengths on the same fibre.<br />

The way it usually works is that one unit transmits at 1550 nm and<br />

receives at 1310 nm. The other unit transmits at 1310 nm and<br />

receives at 1550 nm. The two wavelengths operate independently<br />

and don't interfere with each other. Wavelength-sensitive filters<br />

are used at the receiving end to separate the wavelengths.<br />

This bidirectional traffic flow effectively converts a single fibre<br />

into a pair of "virtual fibres", each driven independently at<br />

different wavelengths.<br />

WDM on single-strand fibre is most often used for point-topoint<br />

links on a long-distance network. It's also used to increase<br />

network capacity or relieve network congestion.<br />

Although the WDM used in media converters typically offers<br />

two channels on single-strand fibre at 10, 100- or 1000-Mbps<br />

speeds, WDM is rapidly evolving technology that's increasing the<br />

capacity of fibre infrastructure by leaps and bounds.<br />

Coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) use<br />

wavelengths between 1310 nm and 1610 nm and usually<br />

multiplexes signals across eight channels, although some versions<br />

support up to 16 channels. The relatively new 10GBASE-LX4<br />

Ethernet standard achieves its 10-Gigabit speeds by using CWDM<br />

to divide the data stream into four separate 3.125-Gbps channels<br />

for transmission over fibre cable.<br />

Dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) uses the<br />

1550 nm band and increases channel density even more. It can<br />

achieve as many as 64 channels on a single fibre strand. With<br />

DWDM it's possible to achieve speeds of hundreds of Gbps across<br />

a single fibre. Its ability to handle vast amounts of traffic — even<br />

different kinds of traffic moving at different speeds — makes<br />

DWDM the technology of choice for metropolitan area networks.<br />

Media converters solve the problem of connecting different<br />

media types in mixed-media networks. In order to comply with<br />

IEEE standards, they implement IEEE data-encoding rules and the<br />

Link Integrity Test.<br />

For a twisted-pair segment, a link is a signal sent by the<br />

converters when the cable is in use. If no Link Integrity Test signal<br />

is received, the connected device assumes that the link is lost.<br />

With fibre cable, a connected device checks a line by<br />

monitoring the Link Integrity Test signal from the converter and<br />

the power of the light being received. If the light’s power drops<br />

below a certain threshold, the link is lost. In either case, link loss<br />

usually results from a broken cable, which is the cause of<br />

approximately 70% of all LAN problems.<br />

Link loss is often indicated by an LED on a connected network<br />

device. You can also monitor a link with network-management<br />

software, such as SNMP, which sends a TRAP (alert) to the<br />

management workstation when the link is lost.<br />

Media converters actually function as two separate<br />

Multi-station Access Units (MAUs). For example, one monitor is a<br />

twisted-pair segment and one monitor is a fibre segment. If a<br />

fibre cable is broken and the link is lost, a network manager on<br />

the twisted-pair end won’t know there’s a problem until users on<br />

the fibre side report it.<br />

To solve this problem, <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Box</strong>® Modular Media Converters<br />

feature a unique Link-Loss capability. This enables the link status<br />

on one segment to reflect the link status of the other segment. So<br />

if the link is lost on the fibre side, the link is disabled on the UTP<br />

segment as well. And the converters will send an SNMP TRAP<br />

indicating the loss of link to the management workstation.<br />

Single-mode or multimode<br />

There are two basic types of fibre: multimode and singlemode.<br />

both types consist of two basic components: the core and<br />

the cladding, which trap the light in the core. typical multimode<br />

fibre core diameters are 50, 62.5 and 100 microns. single-mode<br />

fibre has a much smaller core, typically 5 to 10 microns.<br />

In multimode fibre, multiple photons (or modes of light) travel<br />

down the fibre core. However, in long cable runs (greater than<br />

914.4 metres), multiple paths of light can cause signal distortion at<br />

the receiving end, resulting in an unclear and incomplete data<br />

transmission.<br />

In single-mode fibre, the reduced core size allows only a single<br />

photon (or one light mode) to travel down the core. Single-mode<br />

fibre gives you a higher transmission rate and up to 50 times more<br />

distance than multimode, but also costs more. The small core and<br />

its single lightwave virtually eliminate any distortion that could<br />

result from overlapping light pulses, providing the least signal<br />

attenuation and highest transmission speeds of any fibre cable<br />

type.<br />

Autocross conversion.<br />

When using media converters with 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX cable, you may need to<br />

connect your converter to a non-hub device such as a PC or printer, which requires a<br />

specially pinned crossover cable for a connection. A media converter with autocross<br />

enables you to use an ordinary straight-pinned 10BASE-T patch cable in place of the<br />

crossover cable — a manual or automatic switch on the converter makes the crossover<br />

connection for you.<br />

Autocross conversion eliminates the need to crosspin cables and set an uplink switch.<br />

It adapts to the pin assignment of the twisted-pair cable whether it’s crossed or<br />

uncrossed.<br />

Which fibre to use.<br />

• OM1 (62.5/125 μm) — This fibre is now used only used for<br />

small networks with no plans for expansion or no data rates<br />

higher than Gigabit Ethernet.<br />

• OM2 (50/125 μm) — This is now the most popular fibre for<br />

networking as it carries much higher bandwidth and can use<br />

inexpensive LED transmission systems for running applications up<br />

to 622 Mbps (the output is unreadable at faster data rates) as well<br />

as VCSEL for short wavelength (850 nm).<br />

• OM3 (50/125 μm) — This is the pinnacle of multimode fibre as<br />

it carries the highest bandwidth at longer lengths than any other<br />

multimode fibre. It's ideal for applications where future network<br />

expansion is anticipated. The minor price difference compared<br />

with other fibre could be offset by a greater financial savings and<br />

fewer network disruptions in the future.<br />

• OS1 (9/125 μm) — This fibre is only used in networking in<br />

campus/interbuilding backbone applications for distances greater<br />

than 550 metres.<br />

Conversion Modules<br />

media conversion systems and offers a far wider choice of modules<br />

— including autosensing 10/100/1000 Ethernet and switches — than<br />

any other system. Plus, it’s fully SNMP manageable. You aren’t going<br />

Chassis<br />

Choose from four different powered chassis with a choice of<br />

power supplies. All Power Chassis are constructed of rugged metal<br />

and are NEBS Level 3 tested and certified. All but the 1-Slot Power<br />

Chassis are SNMP manageable with the addition of the SNMP<br />

Management Module.<br />

The 19-Slot Power Chassis is available with single or dual AC<br />

or DC power supplies and holds up to three universal 110/230 AC<br />

or -48 VDC power supplies. When more than one power supply is<br />

installed, they provide both redundancy and load sharing. The 2U<br />

(3.5") chassis mounts in any standard 19" rack. A 23" rackmount kit<br />

is available by special request—for details, call our FREE Tech<br />

Support. Backplane speed is 100-Mbps half-duplex or 200-Mbps<br />

full-duplex, enabling two modules to share a broadcast domain.<br />

Choose the 5-Slot Power Chassis for smaller applications. It’s only<br />

1U (1.75") high and mounts in any standard 19" rack. The chassis is<br />

available with single or dual, AC or DC power supplies and holds up to<br />

two power supplies. Shared backplane speed is 100-Mbps half- duplex<br />

or 200-Mbps full-duplex, providing 1.0-Gbps total switching<br />

performance for five slots at 200 Mbps duplex each. Choose a 1-Slot or<br />

Management Module<br />

The Dynamic Fibre Conversion System is completely SNMP<br />

manageable. Just install one SNMP Management Module in each<br />

chassis you wish to manage. You can manage the system with SNMP<br />

and Telnet , in-band or out-of-band. Connect up to 16 SNMP<br />

Management Modules in different chassis by using SNMP<br />

Management Module Cascade Cables and manage them as a<br />

single IP address.<br />

For software customised to the Dynamic Fibre Conversion System,<br />

order Management Software. It works as a standalone application<br />

in Windows ® or you can integrate it with a management program<br />

such as HP ® OpenView ® . The software features an intuitive GUI that<br />

gives you real-time network status and control of your system. It<br />

monitors power, voltage, current, and temperature of the chassis<br />

and enables you to remotely and selectively monitor and configure<br />

the chassis, modules, and ports.<br />

UTP-to-Fibre Modules<br />

Extend your copper network over fibre optic cable. The Dynamic<br />

Fibre Conversion System offers both multimode and single-mode<br />

dual-fibre modules as well as single-mode, single-fibre modules with<br />

support for distances from 2 to 80 kilometres.<br />

The 10-, 100-, and 1000-Mbps modules are Layer 1 media<br />

converters and devices. They don’t monitor packet size, they’re<br />

transparent to oversized packets such as 802.1Q, and they don’t<br />

connect to the backplane.<br />

Autosensing 10-/100-Mbps or 10-/100-/1000-Mbps modules<br />

(LMC3033C–LMC3042C, LMC3058C–LMC3063C) are Layer 2 media<br />

converters that can act on oversized packets. They pass packets up to<br />

1536 bytes and accommodate VLANs.<br />

UTP to Multimode Duplex Fibre Modules enable you to extend<br />

your network over a multimode fibre pair. Modules are available to<br />

support distances of up to 60 kilometres or speeds of up to 1000<br />

Mbps. There is even a module that supports autosensing 10-/100-<br />

/1000-Mbps Ethernet.<br />

UTP to Single-Mode Duplex Fibre Modules enable you to extend<br />

your network over a single-mode fibre pair.<br />

UTP to Single-Mode Single-Strand Fibre Modules extend your<br />

network over just one single-mode fibre strand, enabling you to get<br />

double the use from duplex fibre cable. These modules work by<br />

using different wavelengths to send and receive data.<br />

over long distances with single-mode fibre optic cable.<br />

The 100BASE-FX Multimode Duplex to 100BASE-FX Single-<br />

Mode Duplex modules enable you to extend your multimode fibre<br />

runs up to 120 kilometres over single-mode cable. The Gigabit<br />

1000BASE-SX Multimode Duplex to 1000BASE-LX Single-<br />

Mode Duplex modules support distances of up to 80 kilometres.<br />

The 1000BASE-X Multimode Duplex to 1000BASE-X Single-<br />

Mode Single-Strand media converter modules enable you to<br />

seamlessly connect multimode duplex fibre to a single strand of<br />

single-mode fibre.<br />

Mode converter modules have Link Fault Detection (Link<br />

Propagation) for remote troubleshooting. All are Layer 1 media<br />

converters and do not connect to the backplane.<br />

Redundant Modules<br />

Redundant Modules provide redundant link operation for<br />

networks that require copper or fibre link redundancy. These<br />

modules provide the hot backup you need for your critical<br />

connections, switching to the redundant link within 100<br />

microseconds if the primary link goes down.<br />

All ports support full- or half-duplex operation; UTP ports<br />

autonegotiate duplex, and fibre ports can be set manually. All UTP<br />

ports support MDI/MDI-X, eliminating the need for crossover cables.<br />

All ports support LinkLoss Carry Forward (Link Propagation).<br />

Redundant modules do not connect to the backplane and must<br />

be deployed in pairs.<br />

Switch Module<br />

The switch module (LMC3050C) is not a media converter, but it<br />

works with the Dynamic Fibre Conversion System. Use it to add four<br />

switched autosensing 10/100BASE-T ports wherever you need them.<br />

The switch module is autosensing for both speed and duplex<br />

with hardware control available for two ports and software control<br />

available for all four ports.<br />

Because the switch module supports MDI/MDI-X crossover, you<br />

never need to worry about having a crossover cable. Port 1 has a<br />

manual crossover switch; Ports 2, 3, and 4 feature automatic<br />

crossover detection.<br />

The switch module can pass through oversized packets up to a<br />

maximum of 1536 bytes, easily accommodating normal VLAN packets<br />

(1522 bytes) as well as extended VLAN packets. It also supports MIB-<br />

Stats and per-port VLANs. Nine status LEDs enable you to view<br />

switch status at a glance.<br />

ATM OC3 Modules<br />

ATM OC3 modules are mode converters that support OC3 over<br />

ATM or SONET. They enable you to convert legacy ATM fibre runs<br />

from duplex multimode to duplex single-mode fibre optic cable,<br />

adding up to 30 kilometres of distance to your OC3 network.<br />

T1/E1 Modules<br />

T1/E1 modules convert copper T1 lines with RJ-48 connectors to<br />

single-mode or multimode fibre for long-range transmission. These<br />

extenders provide electrical protection and isolation, increasing<br />

network reliability.<br />

Test modes include Local Loopback, Force 1s to Copper, Force 1s<br />

to Fibre, and Fibre Test. The modules support B8ZS and AMI modes.<br />

The B8ZS mode is the default mode; when both Local Loopback and<br />

Fibre Test functions are enabled, the module is forced into AMI<br />

mode. A DCE/DTE switch eliminates the need for crossover cable<br />

when connecting to devices such as PBXs and CSUs.<br />

UTP to Coax Module<br />

This module provides quick and simple 10BASE-T UTP to 10BASE2<br />

coax conversion.<br />

VLAN Tagging Modules<br />

This family of modules provides an additional layer of network<br />

security by enabling you to use management software to shut down<br />

remote connections. Because these modules enable you to override<br />

physical DIP switch settings for the backplane port, you can easily<br />

disable the fiber link when your remote office is shut down or taken<br />

over by intruders.<br />

VLAN Tagging modules support IEEE 802.1Q Tag/VLAN packet<br />
