Media Converters. 

It seems simple enough: To convert 

between different media, you need a 

media converter. However, it's not as 

simple as that. There are three different 

types of media converters, and you need 

to find the right type for your scenario and 

application. 

Switched Media Converter 

The most common type of media 

converter is the switched media converter. 

These are economical, easy to build and 

simple to install. A switched media 

converter uses standard chipsets for 

switches, which enables the converter to 

run different speeds. Switched media 

converters autosense 10-, 100- or 1000- 

Mbps speeds. 

However, many things you encounter 

with a switch also apply to a switched 

media converter. Not all Ethernet frames 

(packets) pass through the switched media 

converter and you may experience some 

latency. 

If you need a media converter for your 

office network — for internet, e-mail, 

printing and file sharing — you can't go 

wrong with a switched media converter. 

Transparent Media Converter 

These media converters are fully 

transparent within their designated 

protocol. So any frame coming in on "Side 

A" gets converted and is output on "Side 

B" in the same manner. Because most 

media converters are generally converting 

optical to copper Ethernet, only a 

conversion from electrical to 

opto-electronic is done. 

Unfortunately, these media converters 

need to run on the same speed on both 

sides. This applies to the bandwidth (10, 

100 or 1000 Mbps) and the half-/fullduplex 

setting. 

Protocol-transparent Media Converter 

The other main use of a media 

converter is to change between singlemode 

and multimode. In this case, a 

protocol-transparent media converter that 

works transparently and is independent 

from the can work Ethernet, Token Ring, 

ATM and Fibre Channel because they just 

adopt the wavelength. They're available 

for different speeds. 

Why is this so important to know 

Today, IP networks are used for more 

than just sending e-mail, accessing the 

Internet and print servers. Special devices 

exist for transferring audio, video, KVM, 

telephony and other services. Because not 

all these devices work with standard TCP/IP 

communication at standard frame length, 

you could experience unexpected results. 

For example, audio data transferred by 

UDP broadcast traffic have frames blocked 

by switches where "Broadcast Storm 

Protection" is enabled. And there are 

proprietary systems sending very big 

frames (Jumbo frames), which normal 

switched media converters block as well. 

Switched media converters also produce 

latency on your IP network, although one 

switched media converter will not do any 

harm. However, having more than one in 

your IP network can degrade your 

roundtrip time. 

Switched media converters are easy and 

economical, but make sure they're best for 

your applications. 

Advantages of Media Converters 

Cost Comparison 

Fibre Ethernet Switches can be very expensive. At the end of 

2009, a 16 port branded fibre switch (low end) was costing upwards 

of £4K, whilst a branded Gigabit Fibre Switch module for a core 

switch, was typically costing just under £10K. Black Box Media 

Converters allow you to use existing fully functioned twisted pair 

switches and convert to fibre externally. This option can also 

provide flexibility and future proofing in one easy to install 

solution, at the same time as dramatically reducing the costs 

involved. 

A fully functioned 16 port twisted pair Gigabit Ethernet switch 

can cost as little as £150 depending upon model, and combined 

with a 16 port Gigabit media conversion chassis, a total solution of 

under £3.5K provides all the functionality required. But in 

addition, if the type of cable changes again, i.e. from a MultiMode 

cable to a Single-Mode cable, the chassis, power supply and any 

management system can be kept and only the actual cards will 

need to be replaced. A lot of the cards provide 10/100/1000Mbps 

connectivity on the twisted pair port and enable you to begin 

converting at either 10 or 100Mbps, yet provide all the future 

proofing you need to take you right up to 1 Gigabit to the 

desktop. This saves having to buy a 10/100Mbps fibre media 

converter now, and replace it in a year or two with a gigabit 

version. So if you are using a 10/100 or 100Mbps switch currently, 

but are thinking of moving to Gigabit later on, purchasing a Black 

Box 10/100/1000Mbps Media Converter system will provide all the 

connectivity you require today and tomorrow. 

Some of our latest Media Converters use SFP sockets for the 

fibre port. The advantages of SFP sockets is that they are another 

way of providing future proofing. SFP modules are very convenient 

and easy to use and also very easy to replace, without the expense 

of replacing the entire switch. And SFP’s can be replaced one port 

at a time, reducing the need to buy new switches just because a 

few ports are now using fibre. 

Moving up to 10Gigabit Ethernet networks, XFP’s provide the 

same functionality as SFP’s but provide the 10Gigabit speeds 

required for today’s high speed core networks. 

Available in copper (CX4) and both multimode and single-mode 

fibre versions, these XFPs provide the same future proofing as SFP’s 

in one compact, easy to install, practical solution. 

Purchasing an XFP based 10Gigabit Ethernet switch now, means 

you can provide the high speed network required today, whilst 

always being ready for the higher speed networks of tomorrow.

In the year 1830, "The Rocket" was the 

fastest train, travelling between Liverpool 

and Manchester at the speed of 47km/h. 

At that time, people thought that nobody 

would ever have the need to travel faster 

than 50 km/h. In the year 1983 ,the official 

IEEE standard for Ethernet running on 

BNC/Coax was released. The speed was 

10Mbps half-duplex. At that time nobody 

was arguing about bandwidth as they 

weren't transmitting music or video. 

But technology always moves on. What 

seemed impossible yesterday is normal 

today. When sending music, video and 

more across the network, you can never 

have enough bandwidth. 

The LBG6000 and LBG9000 Series 

switches provide you with 10Gb Ethernet 

technology. Black Box supports fibre optic 

and copper interfaces that are available 

and reliable. For copper, use the CX4 

interface for connecting servers or for 

interconnecting switches. Because the 

distance is very limited, you should use 

fibre optic cabling for your long-distance 

connections. 

You may find RJ-45 interfaces for 10Gb 

equipment, but these require special 

cabling and connectors. 10Gb on RJ-45 

uses a line encoding scheme. You may also 

find equipment with XENAPAK modules, 

but these are already phased out. 

Currently the XFP module type is the 

standard for connecting 10Gb to fibre. The 

maximum distance you can cover depends 

on the fibre type installed. Getting into 

10Gb technology begs the question, 'What 

am I going to do' Normally you go for 

new switches to have more backbone and 

aggregation bandwidth. Installing a 10Gb 

Network Interface Card into your file or 

application server may also be necessary to 

benefit from your investment. 

For a complete enterprise system, you 

may need (1) LBG9900AE as the core switch 

with the required number of XFPs and 

several LBG6550AE for the transmitters 

and receivers.

For projects where you need different media types, LGC300A is 

your solution. You can use one of our SFP Modules in each of its SFP 

slots. LBG200C are office-temperature-rated, while LBG200CP are

With the appropriate SFP modules, you can convert from 

multimode to single-mode, from Duplex to Simplex (WDM) fibre or

Why media converters need SNMP. 

The number of Ethernet switches and 

fibre optic segments being added to 

Ethernet networks keeps increasing. And 

as long as most Ethernet switches are only 

available with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 

1000 Mbps interfaces, media converters 

will remain in demand. 

Until now, a failure on the network 

could go unnoticed. Once a failure was 

detected, it could take a long time to 

isolate it, especially if a technician had to 

be sent to the site. But media converters 

with SNMP eliminate some of the 

guesswork. 

With SNMP management, the IS 

manager can detect a failure, isolate it to a

FiberAlert and LinkLoss 

LinkLoss and FiberAlert automatically notify you of "silent 

failures" on the fibre side. These media converters link down the 

copper port when the fibre link is down and vice versa. This allows 

you to see from the other side what happened. Otherwise, the link 

of your switch is up, but no data can get through because the fibre 

line is broken. 

With duplex fibre links, you always have one transmit fibre and 

one receive fibre. The fibre port can only recognise that the link is 

OK when there is no data coming in on the receiving fibre — a 

broken transmit fibre cannot be detected. With FiberAlert, you will 

get that information. 

Having these features is critical if you need to monitor your links 

and/or you are running trunked ports on your fibre links driven by 

media converters.

Single-strand fibre WDM. 


Traditional fibre optic media converters perform a useful 

function but don't really reduce the amount of cable needed to 

send data on a fibre segment. They still require two strands of 

glass to send transmit and receive signals for fibre media 

communications. Wouldn't it be better to combine these two 

logical communication paths within one strand 

That's exactly what single-strand fibre conversion does. It 

compresses the transmit and receive wavelengths into one 

single-mode fibre strand. 

The conversion is done with Wavelength Division Multiplexing 

(WDM) technology. WDM technology increases the informationcarrying 

capacity of optical fibre by transmitting two or more 

signals simultaneously at different wavelengths on the same fibre. 

The way it usually works is that one unit transmits at 1550 nm and 

receives at 1310 nm. The other unit transmits at 1310 nm and 

receives at 1550 nm. The two wavelengths operate independently 

and don't interfere with each other. Wavelength-sensitive filters 

are used at the receiving end to separate the wavelengths. 

This bidirectional traffic flow effectively converts a single fibre 

into a pair of "virtual fibres", each driven independently at 

different wavelengths. 

WDM on single-strand fibre is most often used for point-topoint 

links on a long-distance network. It's also used to increase 

network capacity or relieve network congestion.

Although the WDM used in media converters typically offers 

two channels on single-strand fibre at 10, 100- or 1000-Mbps 

speeds, WDM is rapidly evolving technology that's increasing the 

capacity of fibre infrastructure by leaps and bounds. 

Coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) use 

wavelengths between 1310 nm and 1610 nm and usually 

multiplexes signals across eight channels, although some versions 

support up to 16 channels. The relatively new 10GBASE-LX4 

Ethernet standard achieves its 10-Gigabit speeds by using CWDM 

to divide the data stream into four separate 3.125-Gbps channels 

for transmission over fibre cable. 

Dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) uses the 

1550 nm band and increases channel density even more. It can 

achieve as many as 64 channels on a single fibre strand. With 

DWDM it's possible to achieve speeds of hundreds of Gbps across 

a single fibre. Its ability to handle vast amounts of traffic — even 

different kinds of traffic moving at different speeds — makes 

DWDM the technology of choice for metropolitan area networks.

Link Loss. 

Media converters solve the problem of connecting different 

media types in mixed-media networks. In order to comply with 

IEEE standards, they implement IEEE data-encoding rules and the 

Link Integrity Test. 

For a twisted-pair segment, a link is a signal sent by the 

converters when the cable is in use. If no Link Integrity Test signal 

is received, the connected device assumes that the link is lost. 

With fibre cable, a connected device checks a line by 

monitoring the Link Integrity Test signal from the converter and 

the power of the light being received. If the light’s power drops 

below a certain threshold, the link is lost. In either case, link loss 

usually results from a broken cable, which is the cause of 

approximately 70% of all LAN problems. 

Link loss is often indicated by an LED on a connected network 

device. You can also monitor a link with network-management 

software, such as SNMP, which sends a TRAP (alert) to the 

management workstation when the link is lost. 

Media converters actually function as two separate 

Multi-station Access Units (MAUs). For example, one monitor is a 

twisted-pair segment and one monitor is a fibre segment. If a 

fibre cable is broken and the link is lost, a network manager on 

the twisted-pair end won’t know there’s a problem until users on 

the fibre side report it. 

To solve this problem, Black Box® Modular Media Converters 

feature a unique Link-Loss capability. This enables the link status 

on one segment to reflect the link status of the other segment. So 

if the link is lost on the fibre side, the link is disabled on the UTP 

segment as well. And the converters will send an SNMP TRAP 

indicating the loss of link to the management workstation.

Single-mode or multimode 

There are two basic types of fibre: multimode and singlemode. 

both types consist of two basic components: the core and 

the cladding, which trap the light in the core. typical multimode 

fibre core diameters are 50, 62.5 and 100 microns. single-mode 

fibre has a much smaller core, typically 5 to 10 microns. 

In multimode fibre, multiple photons (or modes of light) travel 

down the fibre core. However, in long cable runs (greater than 

914.4 metres), multiple paths of light can cause signal distortion at 

the receiving end, resulting in an unclear and incomplete data 

transmission. 

In single-mode fibre, the reduced core size allows only a single 

photon (or one light mode) to travel down the core. Single-mode 

fibre gives you a higher transmission rate and up to 50 times more 

distance than multimode, but also costs more. The small core and 

its single lightwave virtually eliminate any distortion that could 

result from overlapping light pulses, providing the least signal 

attenuation and highest transmission speeds of any fibre cable 

type.

Autocross conversion. 

When using media converters with 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX cable, you may need to 

connect your converter to a non-hub device such as a PC or printer, which requires a 

specially pinned crossover cable for a connection. A media converter with autocross 

enables you to use an ordinary straight-pinned 10BASE-T patch cable in place of the 

crossover cable — a manual or automatic switch on the converter makes the crossover 

connection for you. 

Autocross conversion eliminates the need to crosspin cables and set an uplink switch. 

It adapts to the pin assignment of the twisted-pair cable whether it’s crossed or 

uncrossed. 

Which fibre to use. 

• OM1 (62.5/125 μm) — This fibre is now used only used for 

small networks with no plans for expansion or no data rates 

higher than Gigabit Ethernet. 

• OM2 (50/125 μm) — This is now the most popular fibre for 

networking as it carries much higher bandwidth and can use 

inexpensive LED transmission systems for running applications up 

to 622 Mbps (the output is unreadable at faster data rates) as well 

as VCSEL for short wavelength (850 nm). 

• OM3 (50/125 μm) — This is the pinnacle of multimode fibre as 

it carries the highest bandwidth at longer lengths than any other 

multimode fibre. It's ideal for applications where future network 

expansion is anticipated. The minor price difference compared 

with other fibre could be offset by a greater financial savings and 

fewer network disruptions in the future. 

• OS1 (9/125 μm) — This fibre is only used in networking in 

campus/interbuilding backbone applications for distances greater 

than 550 metres.

The system is ideally suited for fibre-based carrier, enterprise, and 

government networks. It’s built to withstand harder use than most 

media conversion systems and offers a far wider choice of modules 

— including autosensing 10/100/1000 Ethernet and switches — than 

any other system. Plus, it’s fully SNMP manageable. You aren’t going 

to find a harder working, more versatile system anywhere! 

Chassis 

Choose from four different powered chassis with a choice of 

power supplies. All Power Chassis are constructed of rugged metal 

and are NEBS Level 3 tested and certified. All but the 1-Slot Power 

Chassis are SNMP manageable with the addition of the SNMP 

Management Module. 

The 19-Slot Power Chassis is available with single or dual AC 

or DC power supplies and holds up to three universal 110/230 AC 

or -48 VDC power supplies. When more than one power supply is 

installed, they provide both redundancy and load sharing. The 2U 

(3.5") chassis mounts in any standard 19" rack. A 23" rackmount kit 

is available by special request—for details, call our FREE Tech 

Support. Backplane speed is 100-Mbps half-duplex or 200-Mbps 

full-duplex, enabling two modules to share a broadcast domain. 

Choose the 5-Slot Power Chassis for smaller applications. It’s only 

1U (1.75") high and mounts in any standard 19" rack. The chassis is 

available with single or dual, AC or DC power supplies and holds up to 

two power supplies. Shared backplane speed is 100-Mbps half- duplex 

or 200-Mbps full-duplex, providing 1.0-Gbps total switching 

performance for five slots at 200 Mbps duplex each. Choose a 1-Slot or 

2-Slot Power Chassis for desktop use.

The 1-Slot Power Chassis is unmanaged; you can use the SNMP 

Management Module with the 2-Slot Power Chassis. These chassis 

come with one fixed AC or DC power supply. 

Management Module 

The Dynamic Fibre Conversion System is completely SNMP 

manageable. Just install one SNMP Management Module in each 

chassis you wish to manage. You can manage the system with SNMP 

and Telnet , in-band or out-of-band. Connect up to 16 SNMP 

Management Modules in different chassis by using SNMP 

Management Module Cascade Cables and manage them as a 

single IP address. 

For software customised to the Dynamic Fibre Conversion System, 

order Management Software. It works as a standalone application 

in Windows ® or you can integrate it with a management program 

such as HP ® OpenView ® . The software features an intuitive GUI that 

gives you real-time network status and control of your system. It 

monitors power, voltage, current, and temperature of the chassis 

and enables you to remotely and selectively monitor and configure 

the chassis, modules, and ports. 

UTP-to-Fibre Modules 

Extend your copper network over fibre optic cable. The Dynamic 

Fibre Conversion System offers both multimode and single-mode 

dual-fibre modules as well as single-mode, single-fibre modules with 

support for distances from 2 to 80 kilometres. 

The 10-, 100-, and 1000-Mbps modules are Layer 1 media 

converters and devices. They don’t monitor packet size, they’re 

transparent to oversized packets such as 802.1Q, and they don’t 

connect to the backplane. 

Autosensing 10-/100-Mbps or 10-/100-/1000-Mbps modules 

(LMC3033C–LMC3042C, LMC3058C–LMC3063C) are Layer 2 media 

converters that can act on oversized packets. They pass packets up to 

1536 bytes and accommodate VLANs. 

UTP to Multimode Duplex Fibre Modules enable you to extend 

your network over a multimode fibre pair. Modules are available to 

support distances of up to 60 kilometres or speeds of up to 1000 

Mbps. There is even a module that supports autosensing 10-/100- 

/1000-Mbps Ethernet. 

UTP to Single-Mode Duplex Fibre Modules enable you to extend 

your network over a single-mode fibre pair. 

UTP to Single-Mode Single-Strand Fibre Modules extend your 

network over just one single-mode fibre strand, enabling you to get 

double the use from duplex fibre cable. These modules work by 

using different wavelengths to send and receive data.

Mode Converters 

Mode converters interconnect multimode and single-mode fibre 

optic cable, enabling you to extend your multimode fibre network 

over long distances with single-mode fibre optic cable. 

The 100BASE-FX Multimode Duplex to 100BASE-FX Single- 

Mode Duplex modules enable you to extend your multimode fibre 

runs up to 120 kilometres over single-mode cable. The Gigabit 

1000BASE-SX Multimode Duplex to 1000BASE-LX Single- 

Mode Duplex modules support distances of up to 80 kilometres. 

The 1000BASE-X Multimode Duplex to 1000BASE-X Single- 

Mode Single-Strand media converter modules enable you to 

seamlessly connect multimode duplex fibre to a single strand of 

single-mode fibre. 

Mode converter modules have Link Fault Detection (Link 

Propagation) for remote troubleshooting. All are Layer 1 media 

converters and do not connect to the backplane. 

Redundant Modules 

Redundant Modules provide redundant link operation for 

networks that require copper or fibre link redundancy. These 

modules provide the hot backup you need for your critical 

connections, switching to the redundant link within 100 

microseconds if the primary link goes down. 

All ports support full- or half-duplex operation; UTP ports 

autonegotiate duplex, and fibre ports can be set manually. All UTP 

ports support MDI/MDI-X, eliminating the need for crossover cables. 

All ports support LinkLoss Carry Forward (Link Propagation). 

Redundant modules do not connect to the backplane and must 

be deployed in pairs. 

Switch Module 

The switch module (LMC3050C) is not a media converter, but it 

works with the Dynamic Fibre Conversion System. Use it to add four 

switched autosensing 10/100BASE-T ports wherever you need them. 

The switch module is autosensing for both speed and duplex 

with hardware control available for two ports and software control 

available for all four ports. 

Because the switch module supports MDI/MDI-X crossover, you 

never need to worry about having a crossover cable. Port 1 has a 

manual crossover switch; Ports 2, 3, and 4 feature automatic 

crossover detection. 

The switch module can pass through oversized packets up to a 

maximum of 1536 bytes, easily accommodating normal VLAN packets 

(1522 bytes) as well as extended VLAN packets. It also supports MIB- 

Stats and per-port VLANs. Nine status LEDs enable you to view 

switch status at a glance.

ATM OC3 Modules 

ATM OC3 modules are mode converters that support OC3 over 

ATM or SONET. They enable you to convert legacy ATM fibre runs 

from duplex multimode to duplex single-mode fibre optic cable, 

adding up to 30 kilometres of distance to your OC3 network. 

T1/E1 Modules 

T1/E1 modules convert copper T1 lines with RJ-48 connectors to 

single-mode or multimode fibre for long-range transmission. These 

extenders provide electrical protection and isolation, increasing 

network reliability. 

Test modes include Local Loopback, Force 1s to Copper, Force 1s 

to Fibre, and Fibre Test. The modules support B8ZS and AMI modes. 

The B8ZS mode is the default mode; when both Local Loopback and 

Fibre Test functions are enabled, the module is forced into AMI 

mode. A DCE/DTE switch eliminates the need for crossover cable 

when connecting to devices such as PBXs and CSUs. 

UTP to Coax Module 

This module provides quick and simple 10BASE-T UTP to 10BASE2 

coax conversion. 

VLAN Tagging Modules 

This family of modules provides an additional layer of network 

security by enabling you to use management software to shut down 

remote connections. Because these modules enable you to override 

physical DIP switch settings for the backplane port, you can easily 

disable the fiber link when your remote office is shut down or taken 

over by intruders. 

VLAN Tagging modules support IEEE 802.1Q Tag/VLAN packet 

tagging and untagging, including double tagging (1Q1Q double 

stacking), enabling you to tunnel VLAN networks with up to 64 tags 

transparently throughout your enterprise network and providing 

excellent control of traffic flow between the module’s fibre, UTP, 

and backplane ports.
