“OUR MISSION IS TO BE CHRIST FOR EACH OTHER”
MY "NICK"EL'S WORTH
BY: FR. NICK ZUKOWSKI
E REMEMBER… This weekend, we remember our
W loved ones who have passed from this life “in the
hope of rising again.” It is always a moving scene as surviving
family members and friends come up to receive a flower from
us. I think back to their funeral services and it makes me realize
how I as your pastor share in your grief. Usually there are
sixty or so names; this year we have about 93. May all of them
find rest from their earthly labors and crosses, and find new life
in the One Who gives us Life!
WE REMEMBER… Many pleasant memories were made
for about 250 priests from the Archdiocese of Detroit who attended
our most recent bi-ennial (every two years) convocation
(convention) up at Boyne Highlands two weeks ago. On Monday,
we learned how to chant the new English translation of the
Roman Missal. On Tuesday, we were told that clergy have the
highest satisfaction rate among American professionals and are
happy doing ministry for you. On Wednesday, we were told
what stresses there are to our ministry and how we respond in
healthy ways, or react in unhealthy ways. By and large, Catholic
priests are just above average in the “normal scale.” At
lunch, I looked around the room full of Detroit priests and
thought, “If this is normal…” and then I made the Sign of the
Cross! (LOL) Actually, I am very satisfied being a priest. I
am very satisfied – most of the time! – being your pastor, and I
am relieved that I am “normal!”
WE REMEMBER… Remember the Tastefest 2011 which
was held at our mother parish, Immaculate Conception in Anchorville,
a couple of weeks ago before we priests left for
Boyne Highlands Well, St. Mary’s own culinary chef, Larry
Paczkowski, walked away with FIRST PRIZE during the Iron
Chef Cook-off! Congratulations, Larry, and to his wife Cindy
who helped with the preparations. They received a check for
$100 and plan to use their winnings to go on a Caribbean
cruise. Um, OK, it will pay for gas to go to work for one
week… for ONE of them…
I FORGOT… Three senior priests (priests who have
“retired” as parish administrators but continue to celebrate
Mass and the Sacraments) decided to share a home. One day
one of them walked into the bathroom with his robe on, to put
on the water for his bath. After he turned the water off, he
stood in the hallway and asked, “Was I coming from or going to
take my bath” The second senior priest walked toward him
and said, “I’ll tell you. Let me walk over there.” When HE got
to the room, he stopped and asked, “Wait, was I coming or going”
The third senior priest who was sitting in the living room
said to both of them, “Thank God I’m not losing my memory
like you two,” and knocked three times on the nearby end-table.
Then HE got up and said, “I’ll go see who’s at the door…”
HAVE A BLESSED WEEK …
AND “SEE YOU IN CHURCH!”
CHOOSE LIFE BABY SHOWER
IN CHURCH
During October “respect life” month, we continue to collect
baby items for Imago Dei crisis pregnancy center. If you didn’t
have a chance to take a baby shower tag, you can still participate
by buying a baby item for ages newborn to one year old
and return it to the playpen in the Gathering Area throughout
October. Thanks for honoring life!
Our next Choose Life committee meeting will be on Thursday,
November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the Annex. All our welcome to
join us! Contact Debbie if you need more information at 725-
2441 ext. 31 or debbiewarren@smqoc.com.
“Catholic Social Teaching” is the term used to describe
the collected teachings of the church on social issues as found
in papal encyclicals and statements, documents from the Second
Vatican Council and Synods of Bishops, and Bishops’
statements from the U.S. and other national bishops conferences
throughout the past century. Rooted always in Sacred
Scripture, these teachings explore and express the social demands
of our faith.
The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom
about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst
the challenges of modern society. It offers moral principles and
coherent values that are badly needed in our time. In this time
of widespread violence and diminished respect for human life
and dignity in our country and around the world, the Gospel of
life and the biblical call to justice need to be proclaimed and
shared with new clarity, urgency and energy.
We emphasize that the values of the Church’s social teaching
must not be treated as tangential or optional. They must be
a core part of teaching and formation. Without our social
teaching, schools, catechetical programs, and other formation
programs would be offering an incomplete presentation of our
Catholic tradition.
On Thursday, November 3rd our Choose Life Committee will
meet in the Annex at 7:00 pm. The Committee discusses issues
relevant to the protection of all life and in addition we will be
discussing our care of our new Gabriel Project mom. All are
welcome. Come and see how you can participate in supporting
our mom. We are supplying her with a crib, clothing
and other items for her little one and could use more newborn
sized diapers. Our new mom has asked that the people of St.
Mary’s keep her in our prayers.
in a crisis situation and need assistance. If you are a mom or
CYO BASKETBALL
We will not be having CYO basketball teams this year. I
am personally unable to continue the program. I would like to
thank all who have participated on the teams for the past seven
years and also thank the parents for their support.
“Sandwich Sunday”
Our next “Sandwich Sunday” is on November 6 from
12:30 – 1:15pm in the Parish Center. Families with high
schoolers, middle schoolers and elementary aged children are
all encouraged to work on this project together. It helps teach
our children to remember the needs of others. Community service
can be earned.
We will be preparing 100 sandwiches, decorating lunch
bags with messages of hope and love, and filling the bags with
a bottle of water, sandwich, a fruit, napkin and dessert.
Thanks to the generosity of many parishioners we have the
supplies we need for this Sunday. Much appreciation to Richard
Swift who provides our bananas each month and Larry
Paczkowski who brings our bread.
11:30am - People of the Parish
As baptized people, we have the privilege and duty
to pray for one another. Here at St. Mary’s our parish
staff has made a commitment to meet for prayer every
Wednesday when the Angelus bells ring, and to join the
parish community for the 9:00 AM Mass or Liturgy of the
Word on the first Wednesday of the month.
We also know that our ministry among you will only
be fruitful if we have your prayerful support. We are
publishing this “Prayer Calendar” containing, for each
day, the name of a staff member. We ask that you pray
for that person and his/her ministry especially on that day
as well as for the larger Church community.
With God’s help, and the prayers of our entire parish
family, we will grow in our knowledge of God’s will for
all of us and better able to be “Christ for one another.”
We hope you will join us in this prayer ministry!
REFLECTIONS
by: Sam & Gloria Iaquinto
After reflecting on the privilege of hosting the Vocare Cup,
we have come to this conclusion: We are not worthy, but we
have been called by Christ to participate in His holy plan to
spread our Catholic faith by praying for an increase in religious
vocations. This we will do daily with or without the Vocare
Cup in our home. The cup brings many graces and blessings
into your home and we encourage the participation of our parish
family. Don’t let this beautiful tradition fall by the wayside.
Sign up for your week today and witness the peace, love and
blessings the hosts have received. Thank you, Father Nick!

It is indeed a privilege to share the Word of God with
children!
During our 4:30, 9:30 and 11:30 Masses, there is a special
opportunity to do so. Children from 5 years old through 5th
grade are invited to go to the Eucharistic Chapel to hear the
Word of God in a way more easily understandable for them.
We are in need of some additional leaders to do this. Teens
are also invited to be helpers during that time.
Please take this to prayer and if you might be willing to
help in this ministry, please contact Arlene Anger at
725-5928. Training will be provided.
Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time A 2
1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13
The Message’s Minister
The minister is not the same as the message. But the message
will have power if the minister has love.
Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy distinguished between the minister
and the message in the First Letter to the Thessalonians. When
they had first visited the community, they chose a gentle
style—like a nursing mother caring for children. They brought
the gospel in love, not with force. “With such affection for you,
we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of
God, but our very selves as well.”
The missionaries felt very close to the people they evangelized.
They shared their faith, which was extremely important to
them, but they also shared their lives—their joys and sorrows,
their hopes and dreams. They all became friends. The community
experienced together the love that Jesus had preached. The
ministers and those they met worked hard together. They did
not make the long journey in order to take advantage of the
local population. Instead, they came on a mission of love, to
preach about love and to be love for their new friends.
God has entrusted each of us as a minister of the word. We are
not the same as the message, but the message will be conveyed
by how we live. If we live in peace and friendship with others,
we will proclaim the gospel message in more than words.
LITURGICAL BITS & BYTES
Receiving Communion Twice
Sometimes people ask if it is permissible to receive Holy
Communion more than once a day. The norm is to receive the
Lord once a day. (This rule is meant to avoid a previous
abuse during which people would “church-hop,” going to
receive Holy Communion from many churches a day so as to
become “holier.”) Occasions might arise, however, in which
you find yourself celebrating at more than one Mass (for example,
while attending a funeral, a wedding, a Confirmation,
or another occasion of special significance). Then, of course,
an additional communion is certainly approved.
Q: Why do we interrupt Mass with announcements
Wouldn’t it be better to make them before Mass begins
A: The placement of announcements during the Liturgy has
been the subject of a great deal of discussion. There are reasons
that they are best put at the end of Mass before the dismissal.
The Communion Rite ends with the Prayer after Communion
prayed by the presider at the chair. What follows is
really all part of the Rite of Sending. “We can’t stay here—
we have work to do,” and so the announcements bring us
back to the concrete tasks of building the kingdom. We are
then blessed for the task and dismissed as a community by
the presider.
Our deepest sympathy and prayers are
extended to the families of:
“In our hearts NOW”
Words to Remember
Excerpts from Fr. Nick’s homily last
weekend
Washington DC March for Life this January 2012—Jan. 21—24
This weekend, we acknowledge
and salute our young people as we
observe our parish celebration of national World Youth Day … I thank
the young people who have come forward in leadership roles,
especially with the older students mentoring the younger ones. I
thank the parents who sacrifice their time and talent — usually their
treasure — to insure that we have a holy and wholesome
environment and experiences to prepare our young people for life in
the “real world.”
Most importantly, I thank this parish community for supporting with
prayer and financial assistance all the projects necessary so that our
youth could attend Rainbow in Detroit, the March for Life in Wash DC
and our mission activity in the City of Detroit and in the backwoods
and hollers of Kentucky at our sister parish and mission school run by
the Piarist Fathers.
It is safe to say that our young people in this parish community have
learned that they are not only the FUTURE of our PARISH, but that
they have a place at the Lord’s Table, in this community and in our
hearts NOW!
I pray that each one of you young people will discover the truth that
God loves you. That God wants to live in your heart and in your life.
That God has a special call, a vocation, for each one of you, and is
waiting for you to reply. In the words of Face Book: Friend Jesus.
Accept and do not ignore His love for you! For richer; for poorer; in
good times and in bad; in sickness and in health; God is with you.
Jesus says, “I am with you always, even unto the end of the age.”
Dear Fr. Nick,
Thank you for your encouragement and love of our young people.
Thank you for being their #1 advocate. Know of our prayers. You are
our Pope John Paul II. We will take to heart his words you shared—to
not be afraid. To open wide the doors to Christ. To cast out into the
deeper waters. We are ready for great faith adventures together.
Thank you and God bless
Join over 400,000 standing up for LIFE. Young people from around the country
join forces to send a message for the sanctity and respect for all life, from the
moment of conception to the last breath. Come make a journey of hope and love
for the most vulnerable, for the voiceless. Do you feel that tug at your heart Do
you hear the voice urging you to do it To be a champion for LIFE Don’t worry
about how—just give a call to Linda Jarvi. We will work out the how.
Please help make great opportunities happen for our teens. Retreats, Youth
Conferences, Mission Trips have high impact on teen’s faith life. Help them to
be good stewards. How to be a Youth Ministry Advocate Just buy a YM
