“OUR MISSION IS TO BE CHRIST FOR EACH OTHER”
MY "NICK"EL'S WORTH
BY: FR. NICK ZUKOWSKI
HERE ARE WE ON THE BUILDING CAM-
W PAIGN... The last time the St. Mary Queen of Creation
Building Committee met was way back in March. Since
then, we met again about a week ago and interviewed two
building contractors, seeking the “best bid for our buck.” We
do have someone in mind, but there are a couple of details that
need to be worked out first. We need the permission of the
Archbishop and the College of Consultors (his advisory group
on financial matters regarding parish building projects) to withdraw
the funds necessary to begin construction on Phase II.
We have a three-phase building campaign – Phase II is the
construction of a handicap accessible and-user friendly connector
building between our Faith Formation Building and the
Gym. Ground breaking could take place this month, and the
project should be completed by the Spring. Let’s hope and
pray! Capital Campaign pledges continue to come in every
week; thanks for being so faithful to your pledges. We still
need $1.1 Million to raise the necessary funds to complete our
building project, which, after the Connector Building, will be
an expanded church gathering area.
CONGRATULATIONS, CONFIRMATION CANDI-
DATES… About 100 of our ninth graders in our parish are
beginning their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation
with the Rite of Enrollment at today’s 4:30 PM and 11:30 AM
Liturgies. We have re-designed the process so that it truly is a
full journey of faith preparation and willingness on the part of
our young people to receive and celebrate this once-in-alifetime
sacrament. Please keep them, their parents, and their
sponsors in your prayers.
SPEAKING OF SACRAMENTS… Parent meetings take
place this week for our children preparing to celebrate First
Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Again, with new leadership
and a new program, we hope that our children will be better
prepared to share in these two beautiful sacraments, which we
hope will be repeated many times in their lifetime. Check your
the Luminary for days and times.
FILL IN THE BLANK… We who are older can remember
a lot of familiar expressions to handle life’s ups and downs.
Very young people haven’t learned them yet. Some second
graders were asked to complete the following expressions:
Strike while the… bug is close. It’s always darkest before…Daylight
Saving Time. Never underestimate the power
of… termites. Don’t bite the hand that… looks dirty. No news
is… impossible. A miss is as good as a… Mister. You can’t
teach an old dog new… Math. If you lie down with dogs,
you’ll… stink in the morning. An idle mind is… the best way
to relax. Love all, trust… Me. A penny saved is… not much.
Two’s company, Three’s… The Musketeers. When the blind
lead the blind… Get out of the way.
HAVE A BLESSED WEEK…
AND "SEE YOU IN CHURCH!"
GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS!
Calling All Parents
To
St. Mary Queen of Creation’s
PARENT GATHERINGS
September’s parent gathering saw a total of 291
parents in attendance. Working together we hope
to develop a program to do a better job in passing
the faith on to the next generation.
Last month we considered an independent study
which showed that young people with a strong
faith do better in school, socially, and in life in
general. That was the good news. This survey
however also revealed that Catholics are third from
the bottom on a list of the 7 most common faith
systems in America.
The last thing we considered was the irony of
how we who are members of the one, true Church
have fallen so complacent in passing on this
extraordinary faith.
Please join us in October as we, working together,
map out a plan of action.
MAIL CALL
Q. I find it hard to believe, and politically incorrect, that of the thousands
of Christian denominations in the world today, the Catholic Church would
still claim to be the one, true Church.
A. I believe that we have addressed this question in the past, but it has
been asked several times since. Perhaps if we take a look from another
angle, by asking a few simple questions, we may find the answer. You
used the word "today"; this is indeed noteworthy. If you had lived in
1492, when Columbus sailed the blue, and when the Catholic Church was
the only Church in existence, this wouldn't even be a question. What has
changed How did this change have any effect on the true identity of the
original, true Church
Let's go back to the beginning. We must first ask, did Jesus really establish
a Church in the first place Matthew 16:18 records that Jesus said
He would. If He kept His word and He did establish a church, did He then
promise to protect it (Hint: Matthew 28:20) And, in Matthew 16:18 Jesus
said "the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church."
Okay, if Jesus did establish a Church and He promised His divine protection
until the end of time, would this church still be in existence today
If His Church were indeed still around today, would it know it was still
around, or would it have somehow become oblivious to its true identity
If this Church were indeed still around, and was conscious of its true identity,
would it be right to keep this a secret Would it be wrong to keep this
a secret
With the exception of a few, small, late 20 th century inventions like the
Peoples Temple, or the Branch Davidians, no main stream Christian denominational
system has ever made the claim of being the one, true
Church. This claim is made only by the Catholic Church. Now, if the
Catholic Church is the only Church that dates back to the time of Christ,
and the only Church making this claim, what other system or systems
would you like to consider as being in competition for the title
Since all denominational Christian faiths today are less than 500 years
old, and most are less than 150 years old, if the Catholic Church is not the
Church established by Jesus, what happened to His Church What was its
name Where is it in history Why did it fail after Jesus said it wouldn't
The more time passes, the more denominational systems there are that
come into existence. How would even another 100,000 new denominations
forming in the future have any effect on the identity of the one, true,
(original) Church How then could 25,000 denominational systems forming
in the past have affected the identity of the Church established by Jesus
Wouldn't the Catholic Church's failure to proclaim itself as the one, true
church be nothing less than cowardly and dishonest Wouldn't being either
cowardly or dishonest disqualify a church from being true Isn't the
very (and lone) proclamation of being the one, true Church actually proof
of the Catholic Church's true identity When it comes to spiritual matters,
where exactly should we draw the line between political correctness and
honesty Is it even possible for the Church, established by Jesus Christ, to
be blown about by the winds and whims of political correctness

ATTENTION ALL REGISTERED NURSES
Please read carefully and give prayerful consideration
to the following:
St. Mary Queen of Creation Parish is beginning the search
for a Co-Lead/Lead Faith Community Parish Nurse. A Faith
Community Nurse is a registered nurse who is committed to
Jesus Christ’s healing ministry and facilitates holistic (bodymind-spirit-relationship)
health in the congregation. The FCN
concentrates on providing emotional and spiritual support, all
within the context of health and stewardship of the body. Jesus,
during His ministry on earth, healed not only people’s bodies
but their emotions and spirits as well. The Church is an ideal
place to follow the example of Jesus.
In a practical sense, a Faith Community Nurse supports the
role of the pastor by visiting shut-in/hospitalized members, conducting
blood pressure screenings, connecting people with
community resources, prayer and support, and providing oneon-one
health counseling. We are also in the process of developing
a Health Panel for even more community outreach.
At St. Mary Queen of Creation Parish, this is a part-time,
paid position (10 to 12 hours per week). The nurse will be required
to take the prep course, submit documentation using the
Internet, attend support group meetings and meet other requirements
in affiliation with the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital’s
Faith Community Network.
If you feel a calling to this ministry, please send your resume
by October 15, 2010 to:
would like to participate in our baby shower, please take a tag
and return it to the playpen in the Gathering Area during the
month of October. Thanks for honoring life!
Our Choose Life committee meetings are on the first Tuesday
Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time C 2
2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14
Stirring the Flames
We do not use all the tools we have. A computer can do much
more than a typical user understands. Cell phones have more
bells and whistles than people know about. Many of us do not
know what to do with all the tools in the garage we bought,
inherited, or that were left behind. We have more clothes than
we can wear, more books and magazines than we can read,
more television stations than we can watch. Our lives are filled
with opportunity.
So are our hearts. God has given each of us a wealth of tools at
our disposal. We have cleverness and concern, ingenuity and
compassion, bravery and confidence—but we do not always
use them.
The Second Letter to Timothy speaks of our spiritual gifts as
something waiting to be stirred into flame. “I remind you to
stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the
imposition of my hands.” The Holy Spirit came to each one of
us in baptism and confirmation, implanting the gifts of divine
life in us like seeds. Or like sparks. They are ready to do the
work that God intended them to do.
Those gifts lack only one thing. They need to be stirred. That
is up to each of us. If we are moved by the needs of the world,
we will move for the needs of the world. Stir your gifts into
flame!
Thank you to everyone who supported the hard-working
men from the Capuchin ROPE Program (Reaching Our Potential
Everyday). Special thanks go to our friends at Chesterfield
Rental who were kind enough to again donate the large tent to
shelter the goodies.
VOCARE CUP REFLECTIONS
by
The Dugan Family
Our family included the Vocare Cup and the beautiful
prayers in the booklet into our nightly prayers before bed. It
was like bringing the Church and Mass into our home and family.
We talked with the children about vocations and the need
for more priests, deacons, religious sisters, brothers, lay ministers
and even ways for the young to volunteer, like being part of
the music ministry or becoming an altar server.
We thank Fr. Nick for allowing this wonderful opportunity
to host his cup. Knowing how special it must be to him, made it
even more of an honor. We also thank him for his dedication
and loving service to all of us, his people, the Community of St.
“SANDWICH SUNDAY”
Our next “Sandwich Sunday” is today, October 3, 2010
from 12:30 – 1:15 in the Parish Center to feed the homeless in
Detroit through the ministry of Sr. Judie Ann at St. Joseph’s
Church near the Eastern Market. Sr. Judie Ann delivers
lunches in her neighborhood Monday through Friday. Many
times this is the only meal these folks will receive that day, so
these lunches are a real blessing.
We will again be preparing 100 sandwiches, decorating
lunch bags with messages of hope and love, and filling the bags
with a bottle of water, sandwich, a piece of fruit, napkin and
dessert.
If you would like to help, and/or donate items, this is what
we need at this time:
- 100 large lunch bags
- 100 bananas
- 100 napkins
Thanks so much!
Red Cross Blood Drive
Thanks for helping to save a life!
We greatly appreciate everyone who turned out for the blood
drive. We collected 54 pints this time, so we were down quite a
bit from our last drive. We will be holding our next blood drive
in January, so please plan to give at that time if you can.
Many thanks to our volunteers who always work so hard.
Debra Wojie prepared packs for the nurses, Julia Todd and
Cristina Carducci took great care of the donors after they gave
blood, and Rose Eichhorn and Meghan Warren checked in our
donors. Thanks so much ladies!
One of the continuing challenges of Respect for Life Sunday, is
to remember that respecting life means more than opposing
abortion. There are many assaults on the dignity of life in our
culture, including war and terrorism, euthanasia, capital
punishment, attacks on immigrants, discrimination against gays,
destruction of the environment, etc. Let us be an informed
people and as His followers, act as Jesus would.
PRAYER for LIFE
Heavenly Father, from the smallest cell to the largest creature,
you are the origin and creator of all life. May we be so in awe
of your wondrous power that we never take for granted the
wonder of life, the beauty of creation or the potential of every
person. We recognize the value and worth of human life, from
conception to natural death. Help us to protect and nurture all
life so that in perfect harmony we may offer to you a fitting
song of living praise. We ask this through Jesus, your Son, who
lives and reigns forever. Amen. ~Rev. James Gaffney

Calling all Instrumentalists
Are you gifted with music Do you have a musical talent you would like to share with St.
Mary’s Is God calling you to serve or ministry
St. Mary’s music ministry has a place for you! Perhaps just occasionally playing at a weekend
liturgy. Or perhaps making a commitment to participate in a regular weekend ensemble.

ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL FRONT
$9000.00!!! That’s what we’ve collected in 5 years for our
paper recycling efforts!! (Just think-if we raised that much
money in bake sales how much flour, sugar and eggs that we’d
have used!) We have saved almost 534 tons of paper from going
into landfills AND your efforts generate funds for our local
Society of St. Vincent de Paul which helps the poor in our area.
But on the down side, our paper collections have been going
down every month. Keep in mind that we accept not only newspapers,
but glossy catalogs, old paperback books, hardback
books with the covers removed, cereal and tissue boxes, junk
mail and shredded documents in plastic bags but please no
phone books. Please deposit items in the green and yellow bins
in the parking lot behind the Annex, next to the Parish Center
Hall on the corner of Base and Front Streets.
Phone books are accepted by Waste Management in their
curbside recycling. Check with your own recycling company if
you live outside New Baltimore.
We are still collecting cell phones, ink jet cartridges (in a
zip lock bag), bars of soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, unused
greeting cards and cancelled postage stamps in the white
bins at the Main St. entrances to church. We also are collecting
stickers (any type of stickers) for Head-Start Programs. These
bins are emptied weekly.
We are now sending the cell phones to General Motors to
recycle parts which raise funds for calling cards for soldiers.
Please support our troops!
Macomb County has a monthly hazardous waste collection.
For details and the collection date in October, please call 469-
5236.
Home Depot still collects compact fluorescent bulbs.
Please be careful not to break them-it is best if you bring them
in a plastic zip lock bag.
Habitat for Humanity accepts some household furnishingscall
263-1540 for details. They are now located in a huge building
on Groesbeck at Hubbard St. in Mt. Clemens. They will
give you a donation receipt so you can deduct it from your income
tax!
Best Buy now accepts computer monitors and televisions
under 32 inches for NO CHARGE! They will also accept computers
with the hard drive removed. AND they will also accept
HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES!!! Please bring batteries in a zip
lock bag to the Best Buy store on your next shopping trip.
Thank you for your participation and being good stewards
WHAT IS LITURGY OF THE WORD
FOR CHILDREN
Many parents wonder What is Liturgy of the Word for
Children and should I be sending my child Hopefully the
information that follows will answer your questions. Liturgy of
the Word for Children is first and foremost a worship experience.
Liturgy of the Word for Children is not a religious education
class. It is a way to enable children to participate in the
formal worship experience of the community, where the Word
is proclaimed and reflected upon at a level the children can understand.
The Liturgy of the Word for Children is intended to
form children in the liturgical language of the Church, and to
nourish and guide their spiritual growth.
The format of the Word with Children takes the same form
as the Liturgy of the Word with the adult assembly, except that
one of the first two readings is omitted.
1. Gather with the Assembly
2. Invitation and Sending the Children Forth after the Opening
Prayer
3. Gather the Children
4. First Reading
5. Psalm and Psalm Response
6. Gospel Acclamation
7. Gospel
8. Homily/Reflection
9. Profession of Faith
10. Prayers of the Faithful
11. Procession Back to the Assembly for the Liturgy of the
Eucharist
All children in kindergarten through fifth grade are welcomed
to participate in the Liturgy of the Word for Children in
the Chapel during the 4:30 pm, 9:30 am and 11:30 am weekend
Masses. If you would like to learn more about Children's Liturgy
of the Word or are interested in joining this ministry,
please contact Arlene Anger at 586-725-5928 or
We frequently talk about maintaining good bodily health
through proper diet and exercise. Today, let’s focus on an exercise
in meditation that promotes good psychological health. Let
yourself relax by concentrating on your breathing for a few
minutes. Rest your open hands together on your lap and close
your eyes.
Become aware of the air at your fingertips, between your
fingers, on the palm of your hand. Experience the fullness,
strength and maturity of your hands. Remember the oldest
hands that have rested in your hands. Think of all that your
hands have done since childhood, almost all that you have
learned has been through your hands. Think of all the activities
you have mastered, the things they have made. Remember the
day you learned to write your name.
How often were our hands used to help others, the tears
they have wiped away, our own or another’s and how much
gentleness, tenderness and love they have given. How often
they have folded in prayer: a sign both of their powerlessness
and of their power. Our father and mother guided these hands
in the great symbolic language of our hands – the sign of the
cross, the striking of our breast, the handshake, the wave of the
hand in hello or goodbye.
Think of all the hands that have left their imprint on
you. Fingerprints and handprints are heartprints that can never
be erased. The hand has its own memory. Our handprints and
heartprints are indelible and will last forever on those we’ve
touched. When you extend your hand to another, it’s not just
bone to skin, it’s your heart. A handshake is the real heart
transplant.
Now open your eyes. Experience the afterglow of your
thoughts of hands that have lingered in your hands. The glow
will fade, but the print will be there forever.
These thoughts were taken from Celtic Meditations by Edward
J. Farrell.
