“OUR MISSION IS TO BE CHRIST FOR EACH OTHER”
MY "NICK"EL'S WORTH
BY: FR. NICK ZUKOWSKI
ONGRATULATIONS, MARC RYBINSKI… Today
C at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Marc
Rybinski will be officially admitted as a candidate for the Permanent
Diaconate for the Archbishop of Detroit. This is one of
the steps to ordination for Marc, who along with his wife Sue,
have been preparing spiritually as well as academically for this
wonderful day. They have three adult children and have been
members of St. Mary’s for a few years. Please pray for Marc
and Sue on this special day. With Deacon Richard Damaske,
Deacon Bill Schmitz and Mike Oldani, this makes four vocations
to the Permanent Diaconate in just over ten years! Now
we need to pray that four qualified men will respond to the
Lord’s call to the Diocesan Priesthood! Then one of my dreams
will become a reality! The other is that St. Mary’s becomes a
true Stewardship Parish.
SPEAKING OF VOCATIONS… One way we support
vocations to the priesthood is when parish households offer to
take home for one week our Vocare Cup. The Vocare Cup is
one of my original chalices which I used for years at Mass.
Also included in the Vocare Cup carrier box are a CD of the
seminarians from Sacred Heart, a DVD about priestly vocations,
a prayer guide and a journal to write your reflections. We
have host families up to the middle of October. We need YOU
to sign up and sign out the Vocare Cup! It costs nothing but
your gift of prayer time! The sign-up book is located near the
Reconciliation Room on the table. The wooden carrier box is
taken after Sunday Mass and returned the following Sunday.
Thank you!
SPEAKING OF MINISTRY… A gentle reminder to all of
our ALREADY CERTIFIED Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers
of Holy Communion of the update/re-certification workshop
this Wednesday at 7 PM in church. Everyone who was
trained in 2008 needs to attend if they wish to continue serving
in these two ministries during Mass.
SPEAKING OF MASS… A gentle reminder to be a good
example to your children and to your fellow adults and youth
by coming back to your pew after you receive Holy Communion
and to stay in your pew until the final blessing. As a fellow
pastor once said: Remember: Judas left Mass early too! Do
we really want to be a bad example to each other when we
don’t have a good reason to leave Mass early
MORE WISE SAYINGS… Thanks to Larry for Part Three
of these quotes:
Why do we press harder on the buttons of a remote control
when we know the batteries are dead How come
“abbreviated” is such a long word Why doesn’t Super Glue
stick to the inside of the tube Why do they call a TV a “set”
when you only have one
HAVE A BLESSED WEEK…
AND "SEE YOU IN CHURCH!"
If you are an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion
or Lector and were certified in 2008, it is time for you to be recertified
if you wish to continue serving at St. Mary’s.
Archdiocesan policy requires that all liturgical ministers be
certified every 2 years.
Our recertification meeting will take place on Wednesday,
September 29th from 7-9PM in Church.
Please plan on attending.
St. Mary Queen of Creation Parish is beginning the search
for a Co-Lead/Lead Faith Community Parish Nurse. A Faith
Community Nurse is a registered nurse who is committed to
Jesus Christ’s healing ministry and facilitates holistic (bodymind-spirit-relationship)
health in the congregation. The FCN
concentrates on providing emotional and spiritual support, all
within the context of health and stewardship of the body. Jesus,
during His ministry on earth, healed not only people’s bodies
but their emotions and spirits as well. The Church is an ideal
place to follow the example of Jesus.
In a practical sense, a Faith Community Nurse supports the
role of the pastor by visiting shut-in/hospitalized members, conducting
blood pressure screenings, connecting people with
community resources, prayer and support, and providing oneon-one
health counseling. We are also in the process of developing
a Health Panel for even more community outreach.
At St. Mary Queen of Creation Parish, this is a part-time,
paid position (10 to 12 hours per week). The nurse will be required
to take the prep course, submit documentation using the
Internet, attend support group meetings and meet other requirements
in affiliation with the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital’s
Faith Community Network.
If you feel a calling to this ministry, please send your resume
by October 15, 2010 to:
VOCARE CUP REFLECTIONS
by the Oldani Family
It was a great honor and privilege to host the Vocare Cup
for this week. With two high school age kids in the house to
discuss and pray for their vocations and the vocations of others
was a great experience for the whole family. Father Nick, you
have been a great inspirational shepherd for our whole family
and you will always remain in our love and prayers. God bless.

FAMILY OF JESUS PRAYER GROUP
The Family of Jesus Prayer group invites you to join us for
Praise and Worship in the Chapel located in the Church. (Please
enter the church through the side door on Maria St.) We meet
every Thursday from 7 to 8:30 pm. Each Charismatic prayer
meeting consists of songs of praise and worship, prayer, teachings,
faith sharing and fellowship. The gifts of the Holy Spirit,
some as listed in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, are manifested. Prayer
teams are available after the meeting for those who want to
receive prayer.
Heidi @ (586)725-9636 or Diane @ (586)716-2830.
As baptized people, we have the privilege and duty
to pray for one another. Here at St. Mary’s our parish
staff has made a commitment to meet for prayer every
Wednesday when the Angelus bells ring, and to join the
parish community for the 9:00 AM Mass or Liturgy of the
Word on the first Wednesday of the month.
We also know that our ministry among you will only
be fruitful if we have your prayerful support. We are publishing
this “Prayer Calendar” containing, for each day,
the name of a staff member. We ask that you pray for
that person and his/her ministry especially on that day as
well as for the larger Church community.
With God’s help, and the prayers of our entire parish
family, we will grow in our knowledge of God’s will for
all of us and better able to be “Christ for one another.”
We hope you will join us in this prayer ministry!
1 Timothy 6:11-16
The Noble Confession
We do not always stand up for our beliefs. We say the poor
have rights, but we do not always vote on their behalf. We
want an end to world hunger, but we do not encourage our
elected officials to end it. We want peace on earth, but not
without a little revenge.
Sometimes we succumb to the lesser values of others. We eat
foods we should not. We drink more than we should. Some
people abuse illegal substances. It is hard to stand up for our
beliefs in the midst of a crowd that thinks otherwise.
But we must. The First Letter to Timothy says, “Pursue
righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and
gentleness.” We want to, but it’s hard. “Compete well for the
faith,” the letter continues, as if it can read our heart. Our
faith feels like a competition. We want to do the right thing,
but it is easy to fail. We have to compete for our faith.
The letter recalls the testimony Jesus gave under Pontius
Pilate. At a time of trial in every sense of the word, Jesus
remained firm and gave testimony for “the noble
confession.” He lost his life, but he gained the world.
When we take a stand for our beliefs, we may lose friends,
support, popularity—or life. But we gain peace of mind, a
firm heart, and the confidence that God looks kindly upon us
who—in times of trial—made the noble confession.
CHOOSE LIFE MINUTE
“RIGHT TO DIE”
A CATHOLIC VIEW
We do not have a "right to die." Many people now speak of
such a thing, but without the proper understanding of the terminology
they use.
A "right" is a moral claim. We do not have a claim on
death. Rather, death has a claim on us!
We do not decide when our life will end, any more than we
decided when it began. Much less does someone else--a relative,
a doctor, or a legislator--decide when our life will end.
None of us is master over life and death.
What we do have a right to is proper care. It is never "care"
in any sense of the word, to terminate life, even if that life is
full of suffering. We have no right to terminate life.
There are groups in our country pushing for the "right" to
use lethal injections on the seriously ill, or to remove their food
and water. We must oppose such moral nonsense with all our
strength. And the time to oppose it is now, before it becomes
solidified in law.
Source: Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of “Priests for Life”
In the fall 2010 issue of Living Healthy, the magazine published
by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the topic of Cardiac
Rehabilitation is discussed. Most of us are aware that cardiac
rehab is a step in the process of recovery from cardiac surgery.
We are presently cheering Fr. Nick on as he continues in
his post-operative program.
In addition to using this rehab program after surgery, it is an
important way to ward off future problems if you have a heart
ailment of another sort. It can help people who have had a
heart attack, chronic stable angina, heart failure or heart surgery.
In an analysis of more than 4000 heart attack survivors,
cardiac rehab was linked with a 20-25 percent lower risk of
death after three years.
Dr. William Merhi, D.O., a heart specialist at West Michigan
Cardiology in Grand Rapids says “I don't think there's any
doubt that putting together a good heart rehab plan is absolutely
essential for maintaining good health after a heart attack or
other cardiac ailment.” “The latest research shows clearly that
developing a plan that includes appropriate medications and
exercise--along with lifestyle modifications that may include
losing weight and quitting smoking--can often help patients to
enjoy continued good health in spite of their heart problem.”
Research also shows that an effective rehab program can
help boost “good cholesterol” and slow plaque buildup in arteries,
while at the same time helping patients to avoid the depression
that often follows heart attacks or heart disease. The facts
help form the conclusion that Cardiac Rehab can help aid in
healing your heart.
“SANDWICH SUNDAY”
Marge Kensora, RN
Parish Nurse
Our next “Sandwich Sunday” will be October 3, 2010 from
12:30 – 1:15 in the Parish Center to feed the homeless in Detroit
through the ministry of Sr. Judie Ann at St. Joseph’s
Church near the Eastern Market. Sr. Judie Ann delivers
lunches in her neighborhood Monday through Friday. Many
times this is the only meal these folks will receive that day, so
these lunches are a real blessing.
We will again be preparing 100 sandwiches, decorating lunch
bags with messages of hope and love, and filling the bags with
a bottle of water, sandwich, a piece of fruit, napkin and dessert.
If you would like to help, and/or donate items, this is what we
need at this time:
- 100 large lunch bags
- 100 bananas
- 100 napkins
Thanks so much!
