“OUR MISSION IS TO BE CHRIST FOR EACH OTHER”
MY "NICK"EL'S WORTH
BY: FR. NICK ZUKOWSKI
WE ENTER ADVENT TOGETHER… Today we begin a
new liturgical year with the beginning of the Advent season.
As we prepare for the coming of the Lord at Christmas, we also
prepare for the arrival of Jesus Christ on the day of our death
and at the end of time. Since a “new year” is a time of reflection
and resolution, I challenge you to ask yourself the following
questions. The answers may surprise you and may lead you
to particular “spiritual resolutions” in the four weeks leading up
to Christmas:
Have I grown spiritually in the past year How
Have I deepened my relationship with Jesus Christ as my Lord
and King
Have I studied the Holy Bible and know what it says and what
it does not say
Have I learned more about the Roman Catholic Church, its
teachings and practices
How has my deepening faith affected my priorities, my choices,
my relationships with others Is this leading me to become a
better Christian Steward of my family, prayer, time, talent and
material blessings
WE CONTINUE TO GIVE THANKS… This Thanksgiving
weekend, we gather around the Thanksgiving Table here at
St. Mary Queen of Creation Church. We remember that the
word “Eucharist” means “Thanksgiving” and so we come today
especially with thankful and grateful hearts. We also remember
that the best way to show our gratitude is with an attitude of
Thanks-living: living out each day our thanks to God.
TEA, ANYONE... Don’t forget our annual ladies Advent
Tea this afternoon. You will have an opportunity to participate
in Advent preparation with a guest speaker and time for reflection
and prayer. Our parish youth group will be on hand with
their holiday poinsettia sale to help finance their trip to Washington,
D. C. for the annual March for Life in January.
SPEAKING OF OUR YOUTH… Alex Gaedcke, one of
our youth group leaders, will be presenting to us a plaque of
appreciation from the Piarist Fathers in Martin, Kentucky. The
Piarist Fathers have run a private, tuition-free high school for
the poorest of the poor in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky,
and now have expanded their ministry to include middle
school grades. Our young people have ventured down there
three times during the past summers, and the Piarist Fathers
would like to show us their thanks. Well done, young people!
HAVE A BLESSED WEEK…
AND "SEE YOU IN CHURCH!"
festival storage garage (added in 1997).
Work has begun…..
….on the new Connector Building between the former school
building and the gym. Here is what the site used to look like,
before the demolition work began.
It is hoped that because of your generous stewardship, we
will have a facility which will provide access to a large meeting
area, second-floor restrooms, additional storage areas, elevator
service, and handicap accessibility.
Let us pray for the wisdom and safety of the many people
engaged in this wonderful work and pray for the continued
success of our capital campaign.
KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS
The Knights of Columbus are again offering religious
Christmas Cards and other items for sale this Advent.
Items will be available at all Knights activities in the months
of November and December. Additionally the cards will be
offered in the gathering area after all weekend liturgies during
the Advent Season. The proceeds of this fundraiser supports
the state Knights of Columbus Right to Life efforts. Please consider
helping us help the unborn this upcoming
Christmas Season.
ADVENT TEA
Our ninth annual Advent Tea is being held on Sunday,
November 28 at 2 pm in the Parish Center. This
popular, spiritually renewing event fills the hall each year
so if you wish to attend, please get your reservation in
early!
This year our Tea will feature luncheon sandwiches,
with delicious desserts being provided by our generous
hostesses on tables adorned with lighted Advent wreaths.
A $5.00 donation per person is requested to defray the cost
of the food.
As we gather in friendship for our Tea, we count our
many blessings and in our gratitude to God we reach out to
help others who aren’t as fortunate. This year we have
selected a program through Catholic Services of Macomb
called “A Friend’s House Adult Day Services.” This
outreach provides supervised, daytime care and activities
for adults who cannot or should not be left alone during
the day. They are in need of gift cards to purchase supplies
to provide meaningful activities and care for their
memory impaired/Alzheimer’s clients. The following are
the gift cards they use: Meijers, Wal Mart, Target, CVS,
Kroger, GFS, Michael’s or any gas cards. Thank you for
your generosity!
VOCARE CUP REFLECTIONS
by: Joanne Hacala
Thank you God for giving us the opportunity to have Father
Nick’s first chalice in our home, and to realize there have been
thousands of people who have received Christ from this cup.
Our family members were able to offer a prayer anytime they
came by, for religious vocations, as well as our own personal
vocations. It was an awesome, holy experience for the Hacalas.

OUR PARISH MISSION TO THE POOR IN
KENTUCKY… AND OUR KENTUCKY MISSION TRIP
In the 1980’s, a missionary trio of priests consisting of Fr.
Tom Carroll, Fr. Dave Powers and Fr. Len Gendernalik, opened
a tuition-free private high school for disadvantaged youth in
Martin, Kentucky. After 1993, and for a few years, a benefit
dinner was held at a local restaurant, and later in our parish
center hall, for the benefit which would become known as Fr.
Len’s Appalachian Project. During this time, we also have a
generous young family in the parish who offer to bring down to
Kentucky every Thanksgiving Day Weekend, a large load of
donated winter coats for use by the poorest of the poor. Fr.
David Powers has been trekking up north to be with us every
spring for the benefit dinner and for a presentation on how the
project is progressing. The Piarist School has expanded from
its traditional four-year high school program and has added
grades seven and eight to their curriculum. St. Mary Queen of
Creation Parish is proud to be twinned with this school and with
our sister parish in Kentucky.
St. Paul writes in his first letter to St. Timothy, “Don’t let
anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith
and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).” This past summer a group of
teens from St. Mary’s traveled down to Kentucky with one
goal, to improve the lives of others. These 8 teens from the
parish traveled into the Appalachian Mountains of Martin, Kentucky.
This area of Kentucky has one of the highest poverty
rates in the nation! So along with fundraisers to help our brothers
and sisters in need, a group of teens from St. Mary’s, as well
as teens from St. Therese of Liseux Parish in Shelby Township
and Our Lady of the Woods Parish in Woodhaven left to spread
the Good News and to help the less fortunate.
The experience was eye-opening for the youth. Most
mountain people in Kentucky have nothing but the basic necessities
of life, while we have many luxuries that we take for
granted every day. While we were there, we helped at the Piarist
School by transforming their entire kitchen area. The
kitchen had not been used in 3 years, so you can image the filth
and mold that overtook the room! After 5 days of vigorous
scrubbing, painting and other cleaning, it was finished to perfection
and looked like a completely new place. Although it
was a lot of hard work it was worth it in the end because of the
gratitude that the people felt towards us. They were amazed at
all of our positive spirit and hard work that we had displayed
throughout the week.
By the end of the week, we were all exhausted, yet sad to
leave. The experience was unlike any other we had previously
encountered or witnessed. The new friendships that were established
will last for eternity and the difference we made in their
lives is irreplaceable. In the beginning, we all started off as
strangers going to help others in a new place and in the end we
left as close friends in a place that felt like home and made us
happy. Throughout the mission we truly made a difference in
many lives. “To the world you may be one person, but to one
person you may be the world” (Unknown). With a grateful
heart, Fr. Powers gave us a plaque to present to the people of
St. Mary Queen of Creation Parish, and I am honored to present
that plaque to the parish now.
As baptized people, we have the privilege and duty
to pray for one another. Here at St. Mary’s our parish
staff has made a commitment to meet for prayer every
Wednesday when the Angelus bells ring, and to join the
parish community for the 9:00 AM Mass or Liturgy of the
Word on the first Wednesday of the month.
We also know that our ministry among you will only
be fruitful if we have your prayerful support. We are
publishing this “Prayer Calendar” containing, for each
day, the name of a staff member. We ask that you pray
for that person and his/her ministry especially on that day
as well as for the larger Church community.
FAMILY OF JESUS PRAYER GROUP
I rejoiced when they said to me, “let us go to
the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 122:1)
Wouldn’t it be amazing if everyone rejoiced at the thought
of going to Mass on Sunday As Catholics, we believe that
Jesus is present in the Eucharist; body, blood, soul and divinity.
If this is true, then certainly we rejoice at the thought of receiving
Him into our bodies at every Mass, right The word
‘rejoice’ means to feel joy or great delight. Imagine every pew
filled with believers rejoicing in the Lord and His presence in
the mystical body the Church, in the priest, in the Liturgy, and
especially in the Eucharist. Our churches would be overflowing
with joy!
One of the characteristics of Catholics who have been renewed
in the Holy Spirit or born again, as some call it, is an
unquenchable desire or hunger for God; and a deeper awareness
of God’s presence and power in the sacramental life of the
Catholic Church. Fr. Andrew Miles gives us some practical
suggestions of ways we can be renewed in our faith and our
relationship with God in the leaflet entitled, “Do it
Now!” (available in the Kiosk located in the gathering space).
During Advent the Church prepares for the celebration of Jesus’
birth, and looks forward to His second coming. What better
time than now for us to ask the Holy Spirit to renew His fire in
us so that we can be ready to rejoice in the house of the Lord!
The Family of Jesus Prayer group invites you to join us for
Praise and Worship in the Chapel located in the Church. (Please
enter the church through the side door on Maria St.) We meet
every Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
To contact the Family of Jesus Prayer Group, call:
Parent Gathering
Letter from a Parent
Since when did church have to be
"entertainment" In the last few parent gatherings
that I have attended, the same issue seems to be
coming up in discussion....."Church needs to be
more entertaining" in order to keep our children
interested, or so that they "get it". When I first
heard this said, I was a little surprised, and now the
more I hear it being said, I find myself getting
more and more annoyed.
I remember going to church every Sunday
growing up, and while for the most part I can't say
I really looked forward to it as a kid, as a grown up
I can say it did teach me a lot.....and we certainly
didn't play games while in church, and it wasn't
"entertaining". What I remember getting out of it
was part trying to understand the prayers and what
they really meant, but mostly watching my parent’s
faces and learning from THEM what the
prayers meant and how they answered my questions
when I didn't "get it". I was taught that going
to church is a time to reflect and a time to sit quietly
and listen to what was being said, even if I
didn't totally understand it at the time, one day I
would understand and appreciate the scripture. I
felt that going to church was just one sacrifice I
had to make, giving up a whole hour of my time,
every Sunday.....and being taught what Jesus did
for us....well, an hour a week didn't seem like all
that bad of a deal I guess.
I now have a first grader, who has just begun
his journey in the Catholic faith. At first, of
course, he was and still is a little hesitant about
going to church. I know he doesn't look forward
to going every week, but when he and I sit together
during Mass, and he whispers his questions to me,
or simply stares at the cross and draws his own
pictures of Jesus the way he understands him, I
know in his own little world, that he "gets it". I
know church isn't "fun" for him, but he also knows
that going to Mass every week isn't supposed to be
"fun". He understands, at his age, that Jesus did
die for us, and that was his sacrifice for us. The
more he goes to church, and the further along he
gets in his faith formation, I feel strongly that he
will "get it" too.
There is so much entertainment out there now,
but can't going to Mass just be about slowing
down a bit, and getting back to what is really important
MAIL CALL
Q. I was raised Catholic but for personal reasons, left the Church a long
time ago. How can parents, who have committed unpardonable sins, now
raise children in the faith, or even send them to catechism without looking
like hypocrites
A. First of all, I have never met anyone who has ever committed any
“unpardonable sins”. I have indeed met a few who THINK they have.
The Church teaches that as long as a person has life in their body, healing
and reconciliation are always available. Jesus didn’t establish His Church
to be a hotel for saints, but rather a hospital for sinners. Instead of seeing
yourself as a hypocrite, you should consider yourself as a “perfect” patient
in the Jesus' hospital.
You are right to be concerned about your children’s view of the inconsistency
they may see in your life today. For our children to fully appreciate
the faith, they do need to see it demonstrated at home. The best way
parents do this is by living a sacramental life through the Church. To be
the parent that God intended us to be requires educating our children in the
ways of the Lord. Jesus has given us His Church for the purpose of helping
us to do just that. Parents work with the Church and the Church works
with parents to provide the proper spiritual direction for our children.
This whole privilege of parenthood is brought about by a man and a
woman collaborating with God to create the miracle of human life. This
collaboration does not end at conception. Conception is just the beginning
of our need to work with God. The examples we set, the lessons we teach
and the spiritual direction we provide will all be deciding factors in our
child’s life and their eternal destiny.
Whatever you may have done, or whatever somebody in the Church
may have done to you, Jesus Christ can heal it. You don’t need to remain
outside of His Church any longer. Begin the healing process, come on
home.
Please email your questions to:
mailcall@smqoc.com
OR
Drop them in our Kiosk in the gathering area.
___________________________________________________________
The Focus of Worship
True worship focuses on God. Entertainment focuses on us. On the
Lord’s Day, where is my focus
Worship has always involved a gathering of the faithful, a sacrifice and
has a planned and prescribed order. St. Paul, when referring to conduct in
church, called for all things to be done “in order.” (1 Cor 14:40). From
the Church’s earliest days until today, there has been an order to worship.
Although we are indeed to be conscious of God at home, in the woods
or while being entertained, the Mass is the only place where we find the
gathering of the faithful, the sacrifice and which has a planned, specified
order focused on God, not me.

REFLECTING ON THE WORD
The musical West Side Story was revived in New
York City recently. The first song is “Something’s Coming.”
Tony, a young man, senses something wonderful approaching
but he does not know what. That very night he will meet Maria
and fall in love. On the cusp of this new world opening up
before him, he sings about his heightened sense of anticipation
that something miraculous is about to happen, and it’s just out
of his reach.
It is that kind of excitement that today’s readings are
meant to evoke in us. There is something wonderful coming in
our future—something no eye has seen or ear heard, something
that God has ready for those who love God. But have we
stopped looking forward to “something’s coming” Have we
given up on the hope that something new is coming, that a
miracle is due, and at any moment, possible
Jesus calls to us across the centuries in Matthew’s
Gospel, at a moment when he is about to enter Jerusalem to
die. He calls on us to live in hope that at any moment God’s
rule can be experienced, that the peace that only God can give
will touch our lives and suddenly settle on our hearts and
minds.
How can we prepare for this sudden coming of God’s
presence Try to live consciously aware of what we proclaim
every week in the liturgy: Christ has died, Christ is risen,
Christ will come again.
• When was the last time you looked forward to something
in a way that made you feel fully alive, alert, and awake
• Do you believe that the day is coming when God will
reign, bringing all nations to live in peace and harmony
