Study Report - Women Victims of Crimes in Kerala - Kerala Police

It was specially gratifying and encouraging to work with Mr. Manoj Abraham,
IPS, Inspector General of Police, Kerala and Dr. Srinivas A, IPS, Superintendent of
Police (HQ), Thiruvananthapuram.
The valuable suggestions and guidance we received in the beginning of the
research project from Prof. M A Oommen, Mr. Jacob Punnoose and Dr. P. M. Nair
also need special mention here.
Dr. L. Thara Bhai, Sr. Professor and Head (Retd.), Department of Sociology,
Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, coordinated the study with the assistance of a
research investigation team. The Institute is grateful to Dr. Thara Bhai for successfully
completing this study on time.
The research findings of the study assume special significance as they are being
conducted at a time when the nation is facing the burning issue of crime against
women. This multi-dimensional study suggests solutions for crimes against women
from the point of view of victims, police officers, social workers and the general
public before giving the recommendations from the investigators’ point of view with
respect to those findings of the study that will help concerned agencies and the public
to reduce crimes against women. After all, as Gandhiji once said, if a woman could
walk in the street at midnight, wearing her jewels, without the fear of being
intimidated, that is “Ram Rajya”.
I am confident that the report will help in framing new guidelines to arrest the
accelerating rate of crimes against women in Kerala and for the women victims of
crime committed in the State.
