4 SERVICES FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES A wide range of mental health, educational, supportive and therapeutic programs helps children and families deal with issues related to school, personal and social adjustment. SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMMING - School districts county-wide contract with WJCS to provide high quality services for their communities. Our professionals work with school personnel, parents and community resources to provide on-site mental health counseling for children and their families and guidance for teachers. After-school programming engages children in recreational, skill development and enrichment activities that supplement academic goals and encourage positive social development. Mental Health - In partnership with school districts and NYS OMH, therapeutic and related preventive, early identification and intervention services for children with social, behavioral and emotional issues and supports for families are offered at: • KICS - at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Yonkers • SCOPES - at Woodside Elementary School, Peekskill • HOLLA for Youth Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative – at Longfellow Middle School, Mt. Vernon (terminated June 2008). Educational and Social Support - • The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Learning Center in-school and after-school learning specialists. • Margaret’s Place, a partnership with The Joe Torre Safe-At-Home Foundation ® and Safe Horizons, providing safe havens in 5 schools to prevent domestic violence and help young people affected by abuse in families, relationships or communities. • Young Parents Achieve!, the School-Based Adolescent Parenting Program, and the Peer Education Project provide services to pregnant and parenting teens and supportive programming for at-risk youth, Latino students and families in various school districts (Eng/Sp). • Westchester Workforce Academy for Youth at New Rochelle High School, offering academic, personal and career supports to help low income youth complete high school and establish goals for the future. After-School Programming - • 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Programs at Sleepy Hollow Middle School, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Yonkers, and ASPIRE at AB Davis Middle School, Mt. Vernon • Amazing Afternoons at Edward Williams Elementary School, Mt. Vernon • Community Schools Initiative at Sleepy Hollow Middle School (Eng/Sp) and Issac Young Middle School, New Rochelle • “Off the Street” involving teens as tutors and mentors at Hamilton Elementary School, Mt. Vernon IN 2008: • Began a new Community Schools Initiative at Isaac Young Middle School, New Rochelle, with funding from United Way. • Developed parent workshops offered through the 21st Century After School Program at Isaac Young Middle School. • Extended the Hardy Girls/Healthy Women curriculum to bring strength and coalition building focuses to 12 WJCS programs serving girls and young women; sponsored a training conference for facilitators and personnel implementing the program.
5 HOME & COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES - are locally situated to bring support to young people and families wherever it is needed and to encourage the development of personal strengths and use of community resources. Educational & Social Support - • A Different Start academic and parenting skills for single mothers • Autism Family Center resources and supports for families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders • Center Lane community center for LGBTQ youth • Child Care Home Program enhancing skills of care providers to encourage creative, interactive communication in child care settings (Eng/Sp) • Early Childhood Matters! community awareness program to promote literacy, positive parenting and school readiness in Mt. Vernon • Family Advocacy for youth with developmental disabilities • Family Center day care for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers, Yonkers (Eng/Sp) • Juvenile Fire Intervention Program promoting fire safety education and assessments for children at risk of fire-setting • Milestones* therapeutic and supportive Early Intervention services for young children with developmental delays • Parent Child Home Program/Parent Child Center early learning and parenting program (Eng/Sp) • Service Coordination for children with developmental disabilities • Therapeutic Support Services for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders • Youth Success pre-employment skill-building for court-involved youth Mental Health Services- • Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Center • Early Step Forward-Building Better Beginnings, an early childhood/mental health program supporting social, emotional and behavioral wellness for young children and their families (Eng/Sp) • Family Matters, Family Matters Waiver & Case Management intensive services for seriously emotionally disturbed children, adolescents and their families (Eng/Sp) • Safety Net intensive supports for youth at-risk for sexually aggressive behavior or with history of sexual abuse (Eng/Sp) Juvenile Justice - working with the judicial system to reduce problematic behaviors and create positive alternatives for youth- • Linkages New Rochelle Juvenile Justice System/Dept. of Probation program, Mt. Vernon satellite office • Juvenile Sexual Offender Treatment Program (JSOTP) IN 2008: • Became a partner in a New Rochelle Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative to bring enhanced Parent Child Home Program & Parent Child Center services to the community. • Began Envision, a selective program to offer internships, life coaching and funds that help adolescent girls reach academic and personal goals. • Established Family Forums enabling parents of children with social, emotional and behavioral challenges to discuss issues with agency child psychiatrists. • Engaged in discussions with the FFAWN Foundation and Mary J. Blige to develop a center to promote the educational, vocational and personal advancement of young women in Yonkers. • Collaborated with the Crossroads Center for At-Risk Youth in Jerusalem to share expertise and techniques aimed at better identifying and assisting teenagers facing substance abuse and behavioral issues. * Milestones is an approved provider with Westchester County Department of Health for Early Intervention and CPSE Related Services. There is no cost to the families of children who are approved to receive services by the Westchester County Department of Health (WCDOH) or the Committee for Preschool Special Education (CPSE). For children who receive Early Intervention services, the services are funded and regulated by the NYS Department of Health and Education and in Westchester County by the Westchester County Department of Health.
