FROM HORSES TO GOATSKIN
While Irish youngster Peter Egan goes
international, Leicester-based artist Phil
Reed has gone Irish. Phil specialises in
painting horses - especially racehorses
and last year he went to Ireland to get
its equine elegance on canvas.
THE MUSICAL HARPERS
Rev. Fr. McGlynn, P.P. Gertahork,
President of the Cloghaneely (Donegal)
Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann
making a presentation of an inscribed
silver tray to the Harper family, Dungorman,
Castlefin, Co. Donegal, Branch
members who were outstandingly
successful in Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann
1977.
The four young musicians are daughters
of Mr and Mrs Patrick Harper and Brid
(left of back row) won the iffle and fiddle
slow airs under 11 years, Brid and her
sister, Marion, second from left, won the
All-Ireland Duets under 11 and together
with Amelia, right of back row, they won
the All-Ireland trio under 11 years.
Accepting the presentation is eight
years old Siobhan, the tin whistle player
in the family group.
The talented family make up their
own Celidh Band and in addition to Brid
on fiddle , Marion plays a two-row button
accordion ; Amelia piano accordion;
Siobhan tin whistle and five year old
Patricia, plays the drums.
The Harper family will participate in
the "Aos Og" at the Fleadh Nua.
For some reason which he can't quite
explain, he finished up in Co. Clare and in
no time had put his paints and easel aside
and was swallowed up by the
countryside's traditional music.
The instrument which intrigues him
most was the bodhran. Soon he had
acquired one of his own and was joining
in.
In due course and with considerable
reluctance, he returned to Leicester
where, much to his delight, he found that
there were Irish traditional music sessions
there too - at the local St. Patrick's
Club. And so it is that nowadays one
finds Phil, armed with his bodhran, right
there in the centre of Comhaltas sessions
in Leicester.
And what about Irish racehorses
Well, Phil intends to return to Ireland this
year to finally get them on canvas but
first on his itinerary will be another visit
