Invisible Forces
What are Forces and What do they do

A force is a push or a pull that;
• starts something moving
• changes the direction of a moving object
• changes the speed of a moving object
•causes a moving object to stop.
Start to
Change
of speed
Change
direction

There are always two or more forces
acting on an object.
Force 1: Gravity pulling the boat
down into the water.
Force 2: Buoyancy is the force
pushing up on the boat.
Vocabulary : Gravity and Buoyancy

When two (or more) equal- strength
forces act on an object, the forces are
said to be balanced.
The force of gravity pulls down
on the globe while the hands
exert an upward force.
Vocabulary : Balanced Forces

Unbalanced forces cause objects to
change their state of movement.
The ball is in a state of rest.
It is NOT moving.
If a ball is stationary, UNBALANCED FORCES will cause it to move or change in
some way.

Review: A force can be a Push or Pull.
Forces can be VISIBLE and INVISIBLE.
However ..
some forces are invisible!
