Catholic Tamil Missionary
School is a Primary and
Secondary Grade school with
classes from Grades 1-10(O
Level). The school has 12
Teachers and 110 students - 54
boys and 56 girls.
In February 2005, work
commenced in cleaning out the
school premises of all debris
and preparing the site for a
survey and some preliminary
inspections.
Thereafter a succession of
unfortunate events delayed the
entire process and we were
unable to take advantage of the
early momentum we had begun.
The withdrawal of our original
Contractor was the main reason
for the initial delay and it was
some time before we secured the
services of another contractor
who was willing to work in the
area.
We then encountered more
delays in the fi nalization of
estimates, and the designs of
the school which required some
modifi cations. Sporadic civil
unrest in the area then set in and
it was fi nally only in December
2005 that we commenced actual construction work. However, work
progressed at a reasonable pace with a small workforce.
Despite working through diffi cult conditions, construction continued at
a reasonable pace until mid February with all foundations completed,
while other material was being prefabricated at another site
Work was temporarily suspended at site in mid March pending report
on cement/sand casting blocks. However, this was quickly resolved
with the Project Engineer and Ministry staff and work resumed on site
the following week.
April saw little progress as the site was closed for the local New Year
holiday. Unfortunately since May, work has been temporarily halted at
site owing to security concerns in the area. The situation took a turn for
the worse with heavy fi ghting erupting close to the construction site.
The area is now out of bounds for civilians. However, the Apex
Committee together with the Ministry is monitoring the situation
regularly.
