The Monument
The Apex Committee
decided to erect a special
monument in every school rebuilt
in our ‘Schools Re-awaken’
Programme.
The monument would be in
remembrance of those who
lost their lives in the tsunami,
in celebration of those who
survived; and in gratitude to
those special people who helped
build the new school.
We also needed the monument
to be simple, yet meaningful and
have the ability to convey a range
of emotions to an observer.
After perusing many designs
and models we fi nally selected
the design of Sculptor Upali
Ananda from the Department of
Aesthetics studies, University of
Kelaniya, Sri Lanka.
The entire monument is created
in the form of a wave and
features three school children
in different poses; one is on her
knees and the other two slowly
rising up again with smiles
on their faces holding on to
books and a pencil which are
a symbolic representation of
Rotary and its partners.
The message is simple – you can
knock us down but you cannot
destroy our spirits and we will
rise again stronger than before.
A highlight of the opening
ceremony of a school is the
unveiling of this monument. All
major sponsors of the school
are acknowledged on a special
plaque at the base.
