preface
The Rose Industry is rapidly
changing and this edition sees
just 51 Growers/Suppliers
only a few years ago the total was around 65. Whilst the
number of Growers in the U.K. is in decline the number of
varieties on offer is not! This Edition maintains the number at
around 3,450, with 130 of them being “new”.
In the days of instant Gardening the growth in the Industry is
mainly in the supply of containerised roses. This is prompted
by the wish for instant colour. To help meet this demand, more
growers are offering Container Roses by Mail Order (see
individual growers details and adverts on page 74), mainly
during the summer months. Roses are an ideal plant to grow
with the increasing possibility of water shortages. Whilst care is
needed with newly planted roses, once established, it should be
remembered that roses do not want regular watering. They are
deep rooted and if you keep on watering them you give the
root system mixed messages. When given the opportunity
roses will find the water table.
Find That Rose! as you can see created many years ago and
like other finder books is no longer seen as the must have
“dictionary” in this modern changing world. Whilst it is used
everyday by Growers, Nurseries and Garden Centres, the
general public are ever-increasingly reliant on the worldwideweb
for supposedly “guaranteed” information. I like many in our
industry are a little irritated by “rose finder” sites. So many of
these are USA or Continent orientated and instead of giving
accurate information mention varieties which have been bred
by this or that Grower. This doesn’t mean the rose is still in
commerce or if it is, that it can be bought in the U.K.
In our frustration the U.K. industry is now coming to grips with
the problem. Roses U.K. which is a marketing umbrella for
British Association of Rose Breeders and the British Rose
Growers Association in launching a site (www.rosesuk.com) this
summer which is designed to show pictures and descriptions of
around 1,500 varieties. This site covers most of the varieties
protected by Plant Breeders Rights available in the U.K. and a
healthy proportion of other older varieties. Growers have been
allowed to select some of their favourites. You will also note
that Find That Rose (www.findthatrose.net) now has its own
website. This time round to keep costs to a minimum it will be
in a simplified form, much like the nuts and bolts of this hard
copy. I will offer advertising opportunities and if it proves
popular and financially self-supporting. then I will look to make it
more searcher friendly for the 25th Anniversary Edition.
You will also find that you can purchase a CD ROM version of
Find That Rose.
Every Edition of Find That Rose takes around 4-5 months to
collate the information required. For something that relies on
others for its basic content, it is as accurate as is possible.
Thank you for your support.
