WHAT’S IN A NAME CHARITY ROSES 2006
There are many roses each year, which are introduced to help raise money for one Charity or another. Quite
often the rose itself doesn’t carry the name of the Charity involved and it is difficult for those searching for a
specific rose connected with a Charity they support. This item is designed to guide you in the right direction.
You will find the variety names are in bold and Charities in italic.
The Papworth Rose has so far raised in excess of £2,000 for the world famous Papworth Hospital Charity.
A new rose from World of Roses the Jean Beeden rose will help raise funds for other hospitals Bedford
commemorates the Rotary International Centenary in 2005 and raises money for the Charity. Our Beth was
named by Peter Beales for one of his well loved member of staff who suffered and sadly passed away from
Addison disease. A proportion of the sale price will be donated to help research into Addison’s disease. Dr
raise money for The College of Occupational Therapists Ltd a registered Charity. Perennial Blue launched
in 2003 to celebrate the changing of the Gardeners Royal Benevolent Society name to Perennial has now
been joined by Perennial Blush which should help to increase the donations so far made to the Society. A
proportion of the Royalties growers pay to produce and sell Licensed varieties are sometimes given to
particular Charities. This is the case with the Duchess of Cornwall rose the money raised going to
something very dear to her heart The National Osteoporosis Society. Another rose which attracted The
Duchess’s attention is The St. Edmunds Rose. Plants of the rose where presented to the Duchess and HRH
The Prince of Wales when they visited Bury St Edmunds last summer for the official celebrations of the
completion of the St Edmunds Cathedral Tower. She particularly noted the fragrance and this summer will be
able to enjoy the roses which are now planted at Highgrove. Around £200 has been raised through the sale
of this rose for the Suffolk Millennium Appeal. There can be no mystery as to whose rose Salvation is The
Salvation Army. Many roses have sad origins, the death of a teenager lead to a rose being named simply
Kirsty to raise money in her memory Kirsty Macdonald Fund. Eloise will help raise funds for SANDS a fund
to help understand and support families of stillborn children. A charity will benefit from the sales of the Spirit
of Jonquility named to mark the sad loss of a son. The rose industry recently lost a very popular and
respected amateur breeder and former president of The Royal National Rose Society Colin Horner. His roses
can be noted in Find That Rose with the trade names i.e. name in brackets Hor………. Colin had suffered
over the past few years with Motor Neurone Disease. Sales from the rose Thumbs Up which is the logo of
The Motor Neurone Disease Association will help the funds. St. Clare is one of many Hospices which benefit
from sales of a rose named for them. This Hospice also cared for Colin Horner. St. Helena Hospice is
celebrating its 21st Birthday in 2006. In 1983 Cants of Colchester introduced a rose to help fund raising to
allow a local Hospice to be built. The rose St. Helena which raised around £500 for the Hospice at that
time is now in its second coming and has so far raised around £200. to help current fund raising activities.
Another Hospice (Sobell House Hospice) has its own rose, helping to raise funds for their important work.
Creake Village Hall, the residents of Norfolk have a new rose called Creakes Rose. The Yvonne Arnaud
Theatre will benefit from Yvonne Arnaud rose. Due to the publicity given by her mother Gloria Hunnerford
there is no need to explain why The Caron Keating Rose is raising money for Cancer Research UK. The
Royal Society of Medicine is a charitable organisation dedicated to the promotion of multidisciplinary
education and continuing professional development of medical dentistry and veterinary and allied health-care
occupations. The Royal Society of Medicine selected for their Bicentinary year a rose which they called
Chandos Beauty to help restore this 18th centenary townhouse.
Whilst many Charity Roses do not raise much money, they do help to remind people of the Charity
concerned. Those running Charities should be aware of the need to have a sales plan prior to approaching
Breeders.
