Ignition and Combustion with LTC Consider three ranges of Phi: 1) = 0.65 – 1.0 → SI (spark ignition) • As becomes leaner approaches 0.65, ignition occurs but combustion becomes unstable through expansion. 2) = 0.20 – 0.45 → HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) or CAI • Preheat charge using intake heating or negative valve overlap (NVO) ‣ NVO closes exhaust valve early and opens intake valve late (recompression) • Compression initiates combustion • < 0.2 is not practical with typical CR • > 0.45 causes excessive combustion rate (noise, engine damage) 3) = 0.45 – 0.65 → SACI (spark assisted compression ignition) • Ignite charge with spark; this consumes part of charge at a moderate rate • Initial combustion compresses remaining charge (like a 2 nd piston), and compression ignition consumes the rest. • Attain complete combustion with a tolerable combustion rate.
