Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), a deciduous shrub, is found in
many arid parts of the Himalayan region, as here in Gozal, Hunza. Rich
in vitamin C, its berries are used to make juice, and its thorny branches for
fencing to keep out animals. The shrub can be used for land reclamation
because of its extensive root system and ability to fix nitrogen.
