SAFE WORKING PROCEDURE FOR TRICHLOROETHYLENE DEGREASING
INTRODUCTION
This Manuel has been formulated and published following the COSHH Assessment
on the safe use of Trichloroethylene as a degreasing agent for metallic components.
Employees are reminded of their duties and responsibilities in co-operating with
Management in meeting the statutory requirements imposed upon them.
In order to emphasise the dangers and precautions to be observed, the Company has
produced and provided this safety manual on degreasing which is published in the
interests of health and safety.
Solvents, chemicals, etc used in the Company for cleaning, can be harmful but are
safe if used correctly.
Many of the things with which we come into contact every day can be harmful if they
are not used or handled correctly. For example, we accept electricity as an essential
part of every day life. Properly used it is absolutely safe, but we all know what can
happen if we take unnecessary chances.
This document is provided for your safety, and must be followed to reduce the risk to
both your health and the health of your colleagues.
GENERAL SAFETY
1. The basic points of SAFETY, are easy to understand:
a) Learn the safe way of doing each job.
b) If you do not understand – ask for guidance.
c) If you have not been taught – ask for instructions.
d) Use the safe method in practice.
e) Use the safety equipment and clothing made available.
f) Be constantly on guard against careless actions.
g) Practice good housekeeping at all times.
h) Report all accidents, however minor, to your supervisor.
i) Report anything you cannot correct yourself.
j) Prevention is better than cure.
2. Most accidents are not difficult to understand. They arise because:
a) sharp edges cut.
b) heat and flames burn.
c) chemicals destroy or poison.
d) machinery traps fingers.
e) anything moving can crush.
f) anything heavy can fall on you.
g) chemicals can be poisonous.
h) electricity can burn or kill.
i) eyes are particularly vulnerable.
