VAPOUR DEGREASING 5. Replace gasket (if seal is broken) on sludge door, and refit to plant. Do check there is no leakage after refitting the gasket on the sludge door. 6. Always make sure the plant is cool before topping up with solvent. 7. Do not enter the plant or pit unless you have the authority from management and have been issued with breathing apparatus. If entry to plant is authorised and breathing apparatus (self-contained) is used a second man should always be in attendance for any emergency action. 8. Whilst removing sludge etc, from degreasing equipment during cleaning operations, a respirator type vistarama mask with twin filters, (appropriate to the solvent) must be worn with other appropriate protective clothing. DISPOSAL OF CONTAMINATED SOLVENTS Drain off contaminated solvent from the tank and place into designated containers duly marked ‘ CONTAMINATED SOLVENT TRIKE’. Store containers outside in a safe place away from any steam, drain or sewer and away from direct sunlight. Organise the disposal of the material with a properly licensed waste disposal Company (keep a copy of their license on file). It is the responsibility of site management to dispose of waste materials. Waste must not be allowed to build up. Spillage’s or leakage’s must be contained with sand or earth and transferred to sealed containers to be collected by an authorised licensed carrier. UNIT IN ACIDIC STATE Three main problems may arise: 1. the plant body will deteriorate in condition. 2. the work will become tarnished. 3. The composition of the solvent fumes which may occasionally occur in the atmosphere, even to a small degree, will change and could be considered more of a health risk. In simple terms, such fumes will take on a sickly type of smell. 4. Suspicious or acidic state conditions should be reported to quality supervisor for appropriate test. ACID PLANT – DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES In the event of a plant turning acidic through inefficient and/or lack of cleaning out, the following decontamination procedure should be adopted and supervised: 1. Empty solvent from plant and clean out (as per cleaning procedure laid down). 2. Replace sludge door and fill plant with water up to the top of each compartment and back concentrator where applicable. 3. Light up plant in normal manner (see procedure). 4. When water starts to boil add soda to the extent of ½ Ib. per gallon of water i.e.: approximately 40 Ibs. 4
VAPOUR DEGREASING 5. Swill and clean coils and sides of plant above water level with brush. 6. After 24 hours boiling time, turn off the power and shut the plant down. 7. Pump water out of the plant down tank drain. Dry plant out and fill with new solvent. 8. This procedure should be carried out on each unit approximately every twelve months (This will depend on production cycles). EVACUATION PROCEDURE In the event of any serious incident from spillage’s or leaks of solvent, the area must be evacuated immediately, ensuring: 1. that the total complement of the area affected is aware of the evacuation. Supervisors must ensure that checks are made to stop persons entering the affected area. 2. that the area to which personnel are evacuated has access to fresh air. 3. that the Director and First Aiders are informed as soon as a decision is declared to evacuate, thereby enabling them to assist where necessary. 4. Senior Person Responsible: Must telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service (if required) and take a head count as soon as employees have assembled in the safe area. 5. Information to be telephoned to the following personnel: a) Director b) Engineering Representative c) Divisional Director d) Engineering Director During the checks referred to in (1) above, breathing apparatus MUST be worn. Only personnel trained in the use of breathing apparatus may enter the effected area. BASIC FIRST AID PROCEDURES Treatment of those effected by over exposure to solvent 1. Anyone suffering from over exposure should be moved into the fresh air. 2. Get immediate medical attention. 3. Remove any contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothes. 4. Do not walk patient about. 5. Lay patient on his/her side and see that his/her air passage (nose and mouth) are clear. 6. Keep the patient warm and quiet. 7. Do not give alcoholic drinks. BULK STORAGE TANKS OF ‘TRIKLONE’: The off loading procedures and the condition of the installation are now the sole responsibility of Carrs Management. 5
