What is the NBII
A broad, collaborative program designed
to provide access to data and information
on biological resources

What is a Data Set
• A collection of data that is raw or
statistically analyzed
– Generally data sets are defined as:
• Spatial – a collection of logically related features
arranged in a prescribed manner such as GIS map
layers, water features, etc
• Tabular – a file, spreadsheet, data in a table
– Elements in a data set can include:
• Values, measures, points, coordinates, conditions,
qualities, frequencies, or attributes that are a result
of an observational study

(did someone say metadata!)

When creating a record, address the 7 Sections
of the Standard:
1. Identification Information
2. Data Quality Information
3. Spatial Data Information
4. Spatial Reference Information
5. Entity and Attribute Information
6. Data Distribution Information
7. Metadata Reference
Use ‘controlled vocabulary’ to enter keywords…
…to enhance search
capability later…
Become a Clearinghouse partner:
• Upload records to a
web-accessible folder
• Records should be
in .xml format
• Inform NBII of folder
location (one-time only)
Note: Contact Viv Hutchison
(vhutchison@usgs.gov) for
assistance in this process
• NBII will harvest
records weekly

Nuts and Bolts of the NBII Clearinghouse
The NBII Clearinghouse is powered by Mercury:
- metadata harvesting, search and retrieval tool
- single portal to information contained in disparate data
management systems
- originally developed for NASA, with continuing development
funded by NASA, USGS, and DOE for a consortium of projects
Mercury supports various metadata
standards:
- XML, Z39.50, FGDC, Dublin-Core,
Darwin-Core, EML, and ISO-19115
- based on open source and Service
Oriented Architecture (Solr and Lucene)
to provide multiples search services

Preparing for ISO…
The international community,
through the International
Organization for
Standardization (ISO) has
designed a standard for
geospatial metadata.
The NBII is prepared to accept ISO metadata
records once the North American Profile is
approved.
The “North American Profile” (NAP) will
replace the current Version 2 FGDC
Standard, and essentially become Version 3

Preparing for ISO…
Tools and crosswalks
are being prepared for
the transition to ISO
by the FGDC.
The NBII
Clearinghouse will add
a “View ISO Metadata”
button to the record
results page
The NBII is moving toward greater participation in the
Clearinghouse from the international community.
Efforts being made in South America, Central America,
Asia and Europe
