Report
ACHPER QLD facilitated the celebration of HPE
Week 2010 in a number of schools throughout
Queensland and provided advocacy tips and
ideas for schools to implement health and
physical education into their daily programs.
The Primary Schools Creative Health &
Physical Activity competition was hotly
contested with Barcaldine State School
narrowly coming in ahead of Birkdale SS who
was highly commended.
The primary and secondary competitions
offered resulted in the receipt of entries
demonstrating fantastic “on the ground”
implementation of daily physical activity.
The Secondary Schools HPE Week Photo
Competition winner was Milpera with their
photo montage and caption below:
Milpera HPE: Physical activities crossing universal and cultural
barriers to positively reinforce the value of healthy, humorous and
active participation.
HPE Week was complemented with a social
event, providing a networking opportunity
for those hardworking health and physical
education teachers who make it all happen
within the school environment. In 2010
attendees were treated to a inspirational
reading of the poem “Keepers of the Spark”
by Rupert McCall. ACHPER QLD commissioned
the writing of this poem
by Rupert in recognition
of the challenging and
uncertain environment
that the profession was
in early in 2010 with
questions surrounding
the inclusion of HPE in
the National Curriculum.
The ode to the PE teacher
was accepted with several
sparkling eyes in the
audience, and a great
cheer of appreciation.
