ACHPER QLD Health & Physical Education Conferences Record registrations were recorded at the Health & Physical Education Conferences held by ACHPER QLD. A conference was held for the second time in Cairns, at Rydges Esplanade, and this time over 115 delegates attended the two day event. Delegates travelled from all over Far North Queensland and the Peninsula, some over 10 hours by car to be there for the wide selection of seminars and presentations from quality speakers from all over Queensland. The Brisbane Conference, which was held at Mt Gravatt SHS, by far outstripped all previous attendance numbers with over 175 delegates, more than 35 speakers and a jam packed trade exhibition area. In Brisbane, delegates were treated to a keynote presentation from Professor Michael Kimlin from the AusSun Research Lab at QUT, with the very topical theme of “What Teachers Should Know about Ultraviolet Radiation and Health Care” whilst, Rick Hanlon from AFL Cape York, set the scene in Cairns with a moving presentation on the “Power of Sport & HPE”. Over the two days at each conference delegates had the opportunity to attend practical sessions on dance, baseball, cricket, speedminton, futsal, AFL, tennis, swimming, handball, rugby and volleyball. In addition a very rich selection of curriculum based presentations were offered including risk management, alcohol units, applying the QCAR framework, applying smart moves, writing assessment tasks. Adding to the already varied presentations, sessions on core stability for kids, injury prevention, modified games, indigenous perspectives, emotional states, personality types, yoga, and technology were offered. Supplementing the quality professional development on offer, delegates also attended a complimentary social event at both conferences with Mark Beecroft, GM of Cairns Taipans speaking in Cairns, and Matt McKay, Captain of Brisbane Roar joining us for a casual evening at Mt Gravatt. There were also many lucky delegates taking away prizes from the Brisbane Roar prize packs (autographed by Matt McKay) to educational resources and sporting goods from our trade exhibitors. Both events were supported by the Queensland Government via the Department of Education as major sponsor, along with support sponsors AUST Swim, Viking Futsal, & Footsteps Dance Company. It is clear that the level of interest in Professional Development in the Health Education and the Physical Education curriculum areas has increased dramatically as evidenced by the ever increasing numbers of delegates at these professional development events, and there is also a strong interest in building closer links between schools and local sporting organisations. 12
