associated committees, are those who have been members for less than 5 years. Yet this is the most numerous group of our current membership. We need to attract and engage those who can potentially bring fresh ideas, and help us reach the entire HPE teacher population! We are always delighted to hear from those interested in participating in the direction of this organisation. I would particularly like to thank our staff and contractors for their superb efforts in 2010. Our Executive Officer, Linda Marsden, demonstrated leadership and determination in moving our organisation forward in challenging financial times. She received great support in the office from our Administration Manager, Jill Keating. Jill resigned from her role at the end of 2010 after contributing 5 invaluable years of service. Despite both these positions being part-time, we were able to offer effective and efficient services to our members and partners throughout the year. Our volunteer editor for the quarterly newsletter, ACHPER ACTION, Dr Sue Whatman, also made a huge contribution throughout 2010. Furthermore our office is consistently enlivened and supported each year by a range of volunteer work-experience, internship, and student placements. We are an organisation which provides important professional development for our members and others working in the health, physical education, sport and school recreation disciplines in Queensland. In 2011 we plan to run 2 conferences; four regional workshops; prepare numerous position statements; and communicate constant updates on professional standards. It may surprise readers of this report that we are attempting to provide these services without any financial support from the Queensland Department of Education. We know that chronic disease factors, such as diabetes, are on the increase amongst school age children in Queensland. Our schools are constantly under pressure to provide ‘fixes’ for a long list of health issues; but no funding is available for the professional development of the very teachers who are expected to provide the ‘day to day’ solutions to the health problems of Queensland school-age children. It is for this reason that we have identified the theme for 2011 to be: HPE: Highly Professional Educators, and will continue on our mission to not only provide opportunities for professional development opportunities, encourage and engage in best practice and advocate for recognition of Health and Physical Education as a key and important profession in the wider industry. Executive Officer’s Report In 2010 ACHPER QLD continued to work towards its vision of ‘healthy and active lifestyles in educational communities across Queensland’ and as we were not providing support to other organisations via contracts and projects, we focussed all efforts, attention and limited resources on delivering service to our core client group Health, Recreation and PE Teachers. As a result, we delivered three regional workshops, HPE Week, two conferences, celebrated the 20 th Women in Sport Breakfast and delivered the ACHPER QLD Awards program all with increased attendance and increased levels of professionalism. Each of our events has a unique purpose and role to fulfil, with the Awards Program designed to be a culmination of the efforts invested during the year by recognising those employing the best practices in our industry. I encourage nominations for the ACHPER QLD Awards in 2011 and hope you will share with ACHPER QLD and the broader industry the best practice that is happening in your school or education community. During 2010, we engaged in a process of redeveloping and expanding our website as a major tool for communication and interaction with our members and clients. Much of this redevelopment is not yet visible to the public eye but will be revealed with increased implementation throughout 2011. One major change to ACHPER QLD’s business occurred during 2010 with the printing of the final ever ACHPER Action. Due to increased printing costs, and an increasing amount of staff time to develop and distribute the ACHPER Action the decision was made to move to an electronic version of our journal, which will now be released on a monthly basis to keep our members and clients abreast of topical issues relating to their roles. Our financial situation continues to be a challenge for the organisation, however as our professionalism as an organisation grows and our events increase in attendance our viability will be ensured. With an experienced and expert Management Committee directing and guiding the organisation forward it is my expectation that we will increase our service delivery and our ability to address member needs exponentially over the coming years. Special thanks must go to the Management Committee members, volunteers, staff and project consultants. Without their time, dedication, effort and passion our successes would have been limited.
