Test Drive of Your Life! Few people would expect to take the first drive of a new fully-capable 4WD vehicle on a racing circuit, but that was just one of the surprises awaiting the prospective purchasers of the latest Porsche Cayenne models that gathered at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway in late April. On arrival in small groups, they found a fleet of V6 Cayenne and V8 Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo models awaiting them in ‘pit lane’ at the circuit, but first – after refreshments – it was time to get a quick but thorough product briefing from Porsche Driver Training instructor Steve Pizzati. The group then split into two, with half the participants taking to the circuit, driving a series of laps at quick road speeds, while the other group headed for the large car park behind the pit garages. Those driving on the circuit rotated through the full Cayenne model range, experiencing the surprisingly brisk performance of the new Cayenne V6, the even stronger performance in the new 4.8 litre Cayenne S V8 and the spectacular capabilities of the latest twin-turbo Cayenne Turbo. But it was the car park driving test that was the real eye-opener. There, participants drove two mechanically identical Cayenne S V8 models, but one was fitted with Porsche’s new active suspension system, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) that is optional on all new generation Cayenne models. First there was a slalom run through a series of traffic cones in the car with standard air suspension, which in itself was impressive for a full-sized SUV capable of carrying five adults and all their luggage and towing 3.5 tonnes. But the run with the Cayenne S fitted with PDCC astonished all participants, with the vehicle handling the twisting course with the aplomb and nimbleness of a true Porsche sports car. Cold Play! Ask anyone who has been on one. Camp4 is a unique opportunity to discover how to respond to nature’s extremes behind the wheel of a Porsche. Held in sub-zero Finland and Lapland, the five-day programme offers you the chance to put Porsche to the test in total safety, under some of the most exciting conditions anywhere on earth. As well as testing a range of the most exclusive sports cars in the world, Camp4 also includes a snowmobile safari, shopping north of the Arctic Circle, as well as the chance to enjoy superb Finish cuisine, while you can relax after a hard day’s driving with a sauna at the hotel. And as this is his ‘home’, there’s even a good chance that participants might meet ‘Santa’. Priced at $6,280 (per person, excluding air travel), the Porsche hosted package includes the availability of 911 Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S (two persons per vehicle) and four nights’ accommodation with most meals. The 2008 Camp4 is being held from January 28 to February 1, but you’ll need to be quick. On the Limit Being part of a Carrera Cup Porsche racing team and driving a current GT3 Cup car at its limit on a circuit is the ultimate Porsche pleasure usually reserved for those who fill the 25 available places on the grid for each series round. However a strictly limited number of enthusiastic drivers and GT3 Cup aspirants each year can experience this ultimate Porsche thrill through the Porsche Sports Driving School GT3 Cup Level 5 programme conducted at Queensland Raceway. Using factory-built 997 Cup cars identical to those raced by the likes of Craig Baird, Alex Davison and David Reynolds in this year’s national Cup series, the course is managed by Porsche Driver Training Manager Tomas Mezera and uses other professional racing drivers as instructors. As a participant, you have your own personal trainer and engineer and are able to monitor your progress by comparing data and through expert tuition, honing your cornering lines, braking and gear changing to improve your lap times as you progress. At the end of the full-day course you will have an improved understanding of your own capabilities and the analysis and use of data acquisition to keep monitoring and improving your driving. A DVD with footage of your laps from the in-car cameras, is also yours to keep, providing a unique and valuable memento of the day and your progression. As each day is limited to a maximum of six participants, places are strictly limited and in short supply. Club Sport Update 2007 sees Porsche Centre Sydney South holding it’s own Track Days. We provide expert driver tuition with our qualified instructors who make sure everybody is having so much fun learning to drive safely around a racetrack. If your car is insured with Porsche Insurance, you will be pleased to know that our PCSS Club Sport Track Days are Vero Insurance approved. We only allow Porsche cars on our Track Days so you will be sharing the track with other like-minded owners. We continue with our PCSS Trackside support from our Porsche Technicians and we are now towing our large Trackside Support trailer with the exceptional Cayenne. Passion, style, reliability and fun is what these days are all about. Our regular PCSS Club Sport members are continually welcoming new faces to our track days and often are teaching our newest members how it helps to have a sense of humour to go faster. Sometimes the social gathering in the pits is busier than the track; I guess everyone needs a break off the track at some stage! We are sometimes asked if you need to have a GT3 or Turbo to do a track day. Not at all, Porsche builds sports cars, so any Porsche can be used. You will see everything from a standard road car on road tyres all the way up to track-modified Porsche cars on slicks. Many of our members compete in Porsche Club of NSW Supersprints and motorkhana events and are very successful – and they don’t all drive 911s.
