Our ambitions
To clarify our commitment to building a sustainable future
and making a positive impact, we have expressed it in a
triangle of challenging ambitions.
These are our economic, environmental and social
goals, setting a clear agenda and direction for our
whole business.
An ambitious vision
Our vision is to lead the paint industry into a more
sustainable future and have a positive impact on the planet
and on society. Our ambitions set a new benchmark we
hope others will try to follow.
We have set ourselves stretching targets across the three
key areas of sustainability: economic, environmental and
social, addressing the issues and impacts most critical
to our industry. We seek to work in partnership with our
suppliers, our customers and leading-edge thinkers to
shape the paint market of the future.
Making a positive impact
across the total value chain
At AkzoNobel we are passionately committed to
becoming the number one paint company in terms
of sustainability.
We take a total value chain approach, working with
suppliers, customers and leading-edge thinkers.
We seek to have a positive impact where we
can, and mitigate against negative impacts and
encourage others to do the same.
Choose the right
product for the job
Clearly you have many things to consider when choosing
the right product for any given exterior job. You can rest
assured that with the comprehensive Dulux Trade range,
you’ll quickly find the perfect answer.
Factors to consider when
choosing colours
n Number of coats being applied
n Application rate
n Absorbency
n Texture
n Original colouration
n Condition of substrate
n Hardwood or softwood
All of the above will affect the final colour. For this reason
Dulux Trade recommends applying a trial coat on a small
inconspicuous area before committing to a given shade.
HIGH OR LOW-BUILD
High-build products provide a thicker coat and increased
durability ideal for joinery items such as windows or doors.
Low-build is the preferred choice when more penetration
of the wood is required, and timber movement is more likely
(e.g. cladding / fascias etc.)
High-build
Low-build
Semi-transparent or opaque
Semi-transparents are available in a range of natural
wood colours, and are perfect for showing off the
natural wood grain.
Opaques provide a solid colour finish, ideal for hiding
imperfections, yet allow the wood texture to show.
WATER-BASED or SOLVENT-BASED
As with high and low-build formulations, water and
solvent-based products offer differing benefits to suit
different applications:
Coating above
the surface
Coating below
the surface
Wood layer
WATER-BASED BENEFITS
Low odour
Quick drying
Lower environmental impact
Minimal discolouration
for clear coats
Easy clean-up of brushes
and equipment
SOLVENT-BASED BENEFITS
Traditional
Will not raise the grain
of the wood as much
Longer working time
Naked Wood
Better protection
for naked wood
Buildings with untreated exterior
wood,including cladding, can look
great when first put up, but as the
wood weathers it can swell, warp,
crack and lose its original colour.
Mould and fungi can also degrade the
wood and cause unsightly staining.
The Weathershield Naked Wood
system from Dulux Trade uses unique
flexible polyurethane technology to
achieve a flexible yet durable protective
finish which greatly outperforms
conventional varnish technology.
Depending on the type of wood to be
coated, the number of coats applied
and the degree of exposure to the
elements, Weathershield Naked Wood
can provide long lasting protection
while enhancing the natural beauty of
the wood.
Notes: Softwoods are generally less durable than hardwoods. A slight darkening of
the wood can be expected.
Notes: The basecoat is especially important for open grained woods.
Additional top-coats might be considered.
Western Red Cedar
Notes: The wood will not grey when treated with Weathershield Naked Wood,
EXPECTANCY †
3 to 4 years
3 to 4 years
3 to 4 years
† Under average climatic conditions. *Keruing is a naturally resinous wood. Resin exudates may occur and lead to an unattractive appearance. ** Meranti wood will
not grey when treated with Weathershield Naked Wood, but some fading of the natural red colour may occur over time.
Wood is a natural substrate and performance varies on different types of wood (and in some cases even on different planks of the same wood). The climate, aspect
and details of the site will also affect the performance. The Weathershield Naked Wood system has been extensively tested on a variety of wood species and a guide
to performance is indicated in the table above. Information about other wood species are available on request from the ICI Paints AkzoNobel Technical Advice Centre
**The Weathershield Naked Wood system will prevent wood greying for up to 4 years. On certain wood
types it may last even longer, provided that the instructions are carefully followed, although after significant
exposure periods some wood species such as Western Red Cedar will show some fading of its natural
colour. For full details of performance by wood type refer to Datasheet 619, available on our website.
† Light foot traffic is possible after 24 hours but to prevent possible damage to the floor
while the full mechanical resistance develops, avoid heavy wear and do not replace
carpet or rugs or move furniture for at least 7 days after application.
Applying
Diamond Glaze
On bare new wood floors…
Rub down the thoroughly cleaned surface with grit 120 abrasive,
vacuum and leave to settle overnight. Tack the surface with a damp
cloth and allow to dry. Prime the surface with one coat of Diamond
Glaze. Leave overnight to dry then lightly sand with the grain using
grit 120 abrasive and remove dust before finishing with a further
2-3 coats.
On floors previously treated
with Diamond Glaze…
Test a small clean area first, sand with grit 120 abrasive and dust
off. Apply a test patch of Diamond Glaze – if the glaze leaves
uncoated spots, the surface is contaminated and needs to be
stripped. If the film formed is unblemished, leave for 24 hours then
test for adhesion by scraping with a coin. If the surface is sound,
continue with preparation and priming as described above.
On previously waxed,
oiled or polished floors…
After cleaning or stripping to a depth of 2/3mm on a test area,
place a drop of water on the bare wood – if it forms a bead, wax
is still present and Diamond Glaze should not be used. If the water
disperses, carry out the application/adhesion tests above before
proceeding with cleaning or stripping and priming.
On unknown finishes and
poor condition floors…
Clean with a preparatory floor cleaner then white spirit.
Perform the adhesion, application and water bead tests
as above.
We have produced colours as accurately as printing will allow. Unfortunately we cannot
guarantee an exact colour match, and the colours contained in this guide should not be relied
on as such. Please ensure that you use a colour tester on the actual surface to be coated
before undertaking your decoration. This will give you a stronger indication of the appearance
of the actual colour, which can be affected by the substrate and the texture of the surface, or
by soft furnishings and the shape, size and lighting of the room. Please note that colour
testers indicate the colour of the product only, and are not representative of the quality or
sheen of the eventual product purchased.
