The <strong>River</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> is an annual festival celebrating the rich<br />

tapestry <strong>of</strong> creative practitioners living in and complimenting<br />

the beautiful environment <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Eurobodalla</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Eurobodalla</strong> Shire is located on the South Coast <strong>of</strong> New South Wales, on<br />

the Princes Highway between Durras Lake and Tilba Tilba.<br />

The festival grows from the community, presented by volunteers and is focused<br />

on promoting, celebrating and providing opportunities to experience local and<br />

visiting artists. Residents and visitors will be able to delight in an appetising<br />

program <strong>of</strong> live music, theatre, film, visual arts and poetry from one end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

shire to the other. The program promises a treat for all.<br />

GRAND MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY THUR 17 MAY<br />

4pm @ Moruya Public School Hall, Evans St, Moruya.<br />

The 2012 <strong>Eurobodalla</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> festival will be opening with a special event for<br />

all your friends and family, a Grand Mad Hatters Tea Party. The <strong>River</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> team<br />

invites you and your friends to create your own mad hat or teacosie to wear and<br />

join us in an afternoon <strong>of</strong> silly sights, live performance with a spot <strong>of</strong> light refreshment<br />

to tantalize your taste buds.<br />

The evening will continue with the Moruya Public School P&C and Parent Group<br />

presenting in partnership with the Moruya Community Film Group as special<br />

screening <strong>of</strong> Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.<br />

It will be an evening <strong>of</strong> mad hats and frivolity focused on festivals and family fun.<br />

If you are going to be here for the evening, please bring a picnic dinner, have your<br />

photo taken with your mad hat and enjoy a night out with your clan.<br />

ABC Open is collaborating with <strong>River</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> to capture the opening night magic<br />

with a special Mad Hatter themed photo booth with ABC Open Producer, Vanessa<br />

Milton. Come and say hello, pose for a photo, and find out more about sharing<br />

heartbeat <strong>of</strong> our creative community with an ideal opportunity to indulge and<br />

purchase local artisan’s work, experience live performance whilst you wander<br />

around the markets. The Moruya <strong>River</strong> <strong>River</strong>side Park is the perfect place for a<br />

picnic. Bring along your hamper and blanket and prepare to be entertained.<br />

South East <strong>Art</strong>s supports arts and cultural development by providing<br />

advice and assistance across all art forms and undertaking strategic<br />

initiatives and projects.<br />

Sunshine is part <strong>of</strong> a theatre project that uses oral history interviews<br />

and research to create short, engaging performance pieces that explore<br />

walks along the <strong>River</strong>s and foreshores <strong>of</strong> Moruya, Batemans Bay and Narooma.<br />

The walks will last for 30 minutes and every participant in the walk will be eligible<br />

to go into the draw to win a new pair <strong>of</strong> walking shoes. Bring a picnic and share in<br />

a fruit platter at the end <strong>of</strong> the walk as we take in the majestic water views <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Eurobodalla</strong>.<br />

Carmen Jones is a musical produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The screenplay is based<br />

on the 1943 stage production <strong>of</strong> the same name by Oscar Hammerstein. Hammerstein also wrote<br />

the lyrics to music composed by Georges Bizet for his 1875 opera Carmen. In 1992, the film was<br />

selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library <strong>of</strong> Congress as<br />

being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.<br />

Graeme Base’s work, the Moruya Public School has been creating a magical<br />

musical theatre work and will be providing a mere snippet to whet your curiosity<br />

and transport you into the enchanted world <strong>of</strong> the sea.<br />

Janette Dadd brings her poetry to life in performance. With a sense <strong>of</strong> theatre and<br />

audience participation, you will be indulged.<br />

SUNSHINE SUN 20 MAY<br />

2pm @ Narooma Kinema, Princes Highway, Narooma.<br />

Alma and Bill are in love….with each other, with dances and balls (Alma) and with<br />

big game fishing (Bill). They juggle their passions against the backdrop <strong>of</strong> the<br />

bustling town <strong>of</strong> Narooma in 1939 – a town <strong>of</strong> fishing, timber and shipping, as<br />

well as a summer playground <strong>of</strong> the well-to-do set from out <strong>of</strong> town. But war will<br />

soon change the world they know and love.<br />

A rehearsed reading <strong>of</strong> Sunshine will be performed at the Narooma Kinema<br />

– the original School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>s building and scene <strong>of</strong> many social events <strong>of</strong> the time.<br />

This performance is part <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> new theatre piece created by South East <strong>Art</strong>s and<br />

written by Mary Rachel Brown. Audience will be invited to participate in a discussion with the actors<br />

and writer after the performance.<br />

THE HANDSOME MEN WITH UGLY HATS SAT 26 MAY<br />

Presented by National University Theatre Society (NUTS)<br />

Two young men explore a series <strong>of</strong> short duologues, fun, quirky and serious, the hats tell it all.<br />

Remy Graham as <strong>Art</strong>istic Director <strong>of</strong> the National University Theatre Society (NUTS) has taken<br />

this student theatre company in new and interesting areas since beginning this role in 2011. He<br />

met Joshua Bell through his studies at University, and has since worked with Josh in a number <strong>of</strong><br />

capacities. Joshua Bell, has been caught up in this business <strong>of</strong> drama ever since his début role<br />

<strong>of</strong> Vimes in “Guards! Guards!” at high school. Joshua was a part <strong>of</strong> the Canberra Youth Theatre’s<br />

Actors Ensemble, when he performed in the play “The Messenger” as Marv and The Rapist. He has<br />

performed in many productions while at the ANU. These include; Orsino in “The Twelfth Night”, and<br />

Admetus in “Alkestis”. Other productions through the Australian National Theatre Society had lead<br />

him to perform Knocka in “Dimboola”, and Woyzeck in “Woyzeck”. He performs story-time at the<br />

library, which makes him feel like a Wiggle. His loves include both Improv Theatre, and existential<br />

dramas. Remy and Josh formed the ‘Handsome Men’ duo as they have wanted for a long time to<br />

work together in a more pr<strong>of</strong>essional capacity.<br />

BARNEY BARNBROOK MUSIC IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP SAT 19 MAY<br />

10am – 4pm @ St. Mary’s Performing <strong>Art</strong>s Centre, Queen St, Moruya.<br />

This workshop is designed for people who have a basic understanding <strong>of</strong><br />

musicianship, but would like skills in Celtic, Rock and Blues improvisation.<br />

Knowledge <strong>of</strong> D, E and A pentatonic scales required. The day will cover vertical<br />

and horizontal (modal) improv. These will then be implemented in settings from<br />

traditional to avant-garde and include transposition. The workshop will be aimed at<br />

players <strong>of</strong> orchestral instruments and keyboards (byo keyboard) but all instruments<br />

are welcome.<br />

Participants will learn techniques for capturing the characteristics <strong>of</strong> the surf and<br />

shoreline in oils, using a technique that does not require the use <strong>of</strong> vaporising<br />

mediums such as turps.<br />

Participants will learn to make at least one style <strong>of</strong> hand-made and hand bound, or<br />

stitched, artist’s book. We will cover some <strong>of</strong> the pitfalls: how to stop glued papers<br />

Participants will learn how to use the characteristics <strong>of</strong> pastels to create a realistic painting from<br />

a still life arrangement. They will use elements <strong>of</strong> composition and colour interaction to make a<br />

successful painting. The day allows for individual attention as numbers are restricted. The workshop<br />

is suitable for beginners and those experienced with painting.<br />

Bethany is an award-winning artist with a passion for sharing her knowledge <strong>of</strong> art and painting<br />

techniques and encouraging others to discover their own creativity. She has been using pastels for<br />

a number <strong>of</strong> years to create paintings <strong>of</strong> many different subjects. Bethany enjoys the immediacy <strong>of</strong><br />

pastels, enjoys creating different effects with the medium and is dedicated to her own art practice.<br />

She has conducted several pastel and oil workshops throughout the area. She ran a successful<br />

pastel workshop in 2011 for the <strong>River</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> and is anticipating another fun day in collaboration with<br />

LIFE DRAWING with Janet Jones SUN 27 MAY<br />

Working from a live model, the participants will learn techniques used in life drawing to improve<br />

observation and drawing skills.<br />

Janet worked as a freelance illustrator in London and Sydney, including working on a series<br />

<strong>of</strong> watercolour illustrations for <strong>of</strong>ficial limited edition posters for the Sydney Olympics. As an<br />

accomplished fine artist, Janet has been a finalist in prestigious competitions and has won many<br />

awards. She has also been commissioned to paint many portraits, landscapes and drawings. Her<br />

the topic <strong>of</strong> Celebration. Prizes will be awarded in two categories: 7 – 9 years old<br />
