Birdwood Members and Guests, 

We look forward to your participation in our annual series of tournaments at Birdwood 

golf course this year. These events offer you a chance to play the course when it’s in peak 

condition. Our goal is to provide you with the opportunity for friendly competition and to 

help facilitate interaction between members, guests and staff. 

To enter a tournament, please complete the entry form and return it (with payment) for 

each event, to the Pro Shop. Please note that there are deadlines and cancellation policies 

for each event. As in the past, entries are welcome by phone (434.293.4653) or in person. 

Several of our events require competitors to have a valid USGA handicap index. The Pro 

Shop offers handicap services for the entire year through the VSGA for $30. Included with 

the handicap service is a subscription to Virginia Golfer magazine. 

Entry confirmation will be by either email or telephone. Please do not assume you are 

signed up to play in an event you have not received direct notification – always contact the 

golf shop to confirm your entry.

Members’ Cup Guidelines 

The Members’ Cup is a season-long competition based on the entire event schedule. 

Members receive points for participating and based on their finish in each event. No 

registration is necessary to be eligible for the Members’ Cup – all members participating in 

events receive points. Points are distributed based on participation and event importance. 

The specific point allocation per event will be determined by the number of participants. 

The point breakdown shown on the following page may be adjusted as needed based on 

participation. Standings are posted weekly on a bulletin board near the handicap computer.

Members’ Cup Point Allocation Notes 

In weekly games, including those with team formats, any members who tie for the same 

place will receive the same amount of points. For example, if three members tie for second 

place, they will each receive one-third of the total points awarded to second, third, and 

fourth place. Members on the same team are all considered to tie. Points are awarded 

based on finish amongst Birdwood members only, with the exception of the Jefferson Cup. 

Opening Day and Turkey Scramble points awarded individually to participants – a team 

of four members that wins a flight splits points for first through fourth. No fractional points 

will be awarded and points will be rounded to the nearest integer. 



New for 2011 

saturday skins 

We will be offering a skins game for members teeing off between 7:30a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each 

Saturday between April 1 and October 31. Sign up by informing the pro shop you wish to play in the 

game before you tee off. $5 entry fee registers you for the gross and net competition. Please submit a 

signed scorecard to pro shop staff following completion of round. All players participating in the skins 

game must play with at least one other person. The pro shop staff will award skins at the end of the 

day for both gross and net (gross takes priority – member cannot win gross and net skin on the same 

hole), 50% of pot awarded for gross and 50% for net. Prizes will be kept in the pro shop and may be 

picked up at any time.

The popular Sunday noon game is back for another season! The pro shop staff organizes a weekly 

game with rotating formats. Entry fee is $5 per person. Most weeks feature team events and emphasize 

net competition. Prize allocation varies based on number of participants. Gather on the Birdwood 

Patio following play for scoring and prizes. 



New for 2011 

tournament of champions 

Event champions from the previous year, the top 15 finishers in the Members’ Cup points 

competition, and past TOC champions are invited to play in the season-kickoff Birdwood 

Tournament of Champions. The event rewards outstanding play and dedication to the 

event schedule at the golf course. 

Participants in the Birdwood Tournament of Champions enjoy breakfast and range 

balls before the event, waived cart fees, proximity contests, and individual net stroke 

play competition. Qualifiers will receive an individual invitation several weeks before the 

tournament. A $15 entry fee covers contests and prizes. 2011 Tournament held Sunday, 

May 14. Tee times begin at 9:30 a.m.
