EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Finding security and confidence in a new reality.
A ‘new reality’ is how Chelsea, Cali, and dad, Casey, describe their world after Cali’s diagnosis
of autism. This is, in fact, how many participants and families who participate in programs and
activities offered at the National Ability Center describe their lives.
Read Chelsea’s blog -- wheredidthebirdgo.com -- and you will notice it does not use the words
‘different’, ‘troubled’ or ‘disabled’. Instead, she describes Cali as “a little girl who loves to love
and be who she was always supposed to be.” Chelsea adds: “And yes, she has autism … and this
is a great thing.”
The National Ability Center is not responsible for Chelsea, Cali or Casey’s positive life viewpoints; that is all their
own. We do, however, provide them with tools to encourage their goals of healing and achievement.
The caring and dedicated staff and volunteers at the National Ability Center focus on the empowerment of others
by utilizing sport, recreation and education programs to build self-esteem, confidence and lifetime skills. This can
be as simple as having an adaptive athlete or staff member talk with a newly injured teenager about what to expect
and how to begin this journey to a new reality. It can be as complex as participating for years in our sports
programs to build the physical strength necessary to bike ride ten miles with a grandchild. Or, it can be as
innovative as a veteran diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder working with horses to find a greater
understanding of key communication skills and triggers that will help ease the stress of relating with family
members at home.
“A year and a half has
passed since the diagnosis
and I find myself
more secure and confident
with this new reality.”
Chelsea, parent of four-year-old, Cali,
enrolled in the Hippotherapy program
Gail Loveland
Gail Loveland takes to the slopes at the
2012 Halti Ability Snow Challenge.
We are grateful to each of you for providing resources and wisdom to help us achieve our vision to inspire
individual achievement and create a global impact for people of all abilities. Thanks to your support, our
programs continued to expand this past year. We reached families from 47 states across the country and shared
our expertise with nine international programs.
Your help is paramount in allowing the National Ability Center to continue to achieve these levels of growth,
operating each day as a recreation center for families, an education center for partners, a training center for
athletes and a center of new possibilities for everyone. Just like Cali, this is who we were always supposed to be.

The National Ability Center empowers individuals of all abilities by building self-esteem,
confidence and lifetime skills through sport, recreation and educational programs.

A YEAR OF FOCUS, EVOLUTION AND CHANGE
In September 2011, I assumed the role of
Board President at the National Ability
Center. Like many of our participants, the
National Ability Center has experienced
incredible changes over the past year.
I have been fortunate to work alongside a
talented and committed group of staff, board
members, program partners and volunteers.
Collectively, we have defined the vision and
direction of the National Ability Center and
have carefully developed a Strategic Plan that
will be implemented for the next 3 to 5 years.
The plan was derived from first examining
what we were currently doing, where our
resources were focused and if our efforts and
priorities needed to change to support our
mission. We reviewed all areas of the
organization to optimize and innovate
wherever necessary. The result of our findings
was a comprehensive plan that would keep us
true to our vision, to inspire individual
achievement and create an impact for people
of all abilities.
Utilizing the steps outlined by the plan, we
reconfigured our organizational structure to
support progress, accountability and
communication. As a result, we have already
achieved new levels of innovation, service and care
for people, programs, facilities and equipment.
Lee Gerstein
2011-2012 Board President
Statistics show that the number of individuals
with disabilities continues to rise, this includes
large surges in injured servicemen and women
returning home. We see a great need for
programs and resources such as ours and we
have recommitted ourselves to be part of the
solution.
By defining a new area of focus – Training and
Education – we have been able to address
requests for help and expertise from athletes,
students, families and partners around the
globe. Together, we are and will continue to
make an impact on thousands of participants
and their families.
Throughout this process we have continued to
measure our effectiveness. We’ve been tracking
and recording our levels of customer satisfaction
on recent participant evaluations, (average
scores are 4.5 out of 5 for all programs). We’re
also tracking spending by month, to ensure that
80 cents of every dollar goes back into programs
and services and we’ve made important
investments to update facilities, purchase state
of the art equipment and hire qualified staff
members.
If you have witnessed one of our programs, you
have seen first hand expressions of joy,
determination, trust and empowerment. Every
emotion children and adults with disabilities
express while participating in a National Ability
Center program illustrates the transformational
power that is possible within each of us.
The level of programming available at the
National Ability Centers is simply not possible
without your strong financial support. Thank
you for your generous investment in our mission
and for enabling us to reach a vision that is much
larger than ourselves. The impact of your
contribution is reflected by the thousands of head
tilts, handshakes and joyful tears that come with
the realization of a future filled with possibility.
