Dale Schoon
Announced as CEO
The board of directors of the National Ability Center proudly
announces the selection of Park City resident Dale Schoon as the next
Chief Executive Officer, effective July 14, 2008. Dale has been selected
to replace founder and current CEO, Meeche White, who is stepping
down in September after more than 23 years at the helm of the
Ability Center.
The board of directors is pleased to have located Dale in its own
backyard where he has spent the last nine years
at the United States Ski and Snowboard
Association. Since 2002, Dale has held the
position of Associate Athletic Director where
his responsibilities included operations,
administrative management, financial and
strategic planning. He successfully expanded a
number of programs that have enhanced the
exposure of the USSA.
According to board members, Schoon’s
past experience with the USSA with his
background in finance, personnel, administration
and legal affairs, make him an excellent fit to lead the National
Ability Center.
“Dale comes highly recommended and is a talented and proven
leader,” said Mark Gaylord, President of the National Ability Center.
“He is the right person to lead the National Ability Center in its next
phase of growth. He brings a wealth of experience and embodies the
values that stand at the foundation of this incredible organization. We
are lucky to have been able to locate such a strong talent so close to
home.”
Founder and current CEO Meeche White said, “We’re very excited
to welcome someone of Dale’s caliber as my successor. He really takes
the National Ability Center’s mission to heart, and considering his
sports related background and passion for our programs, he is a great
candidate to build upon our strong foundation and lead the National
Ability Center into the future.”
Dale said, “[I am] overwhelmed by the confidence the board of
directors showed in my selection, and it is an honor to have the
opportunity to work with Meeche White and the incredible staff who
have made the National Ability Center a national and international
leader in adaptive sports.”
Schoon will take over the day-to-day operations in mid-July, with
White remaining involved on a consulting basis for the next several
months to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. A reception to
introduce Schoon to the organization and community will be held
shortly after his arrival in July.
Discovery Camps
The National Ability Center’s Discovery Camps are underway.
The camp started in June and has been going strong. Discovery Camps
are for individuals ages 8-18 with different abilities. Camps are designed
specifically for campers with physical, cognitive and autism
spectrum disorders.
Discovery Camp is full
of fun activities available at the
National Ability Center.
The activities include archery,
water skiing, tie dye, arts
and crafts, climbing wall,
horseback riding, yoga and
much more.
This camp is a chance for kids to be challenged both physically
and mentally. Archery is a mental and physical sport. It helps your
concentration and builds strength. Water skiing helps your overall body
coordination and balance, the challenge course allows campers to
challenge themselves and the climbing wall helps to build trust.
“Safety and fun are our main goals at camp,” said Discovery Camp
Manager, Tracy Riddleberger-Meier. “We have designed camp to give a
wide range of opportunities to each camper. Everyone deserves the right
to go to camp and just have fun. From yoga to water skiing, we hope
our campers will find many activities that they will enjoy.”
The campers will be given a great opportunity to build friendships
with their peers and staff, improve their social skills, gain independence,
self-esteem and self confidence. The campers will achieve these goals by
interacting with one another during activities like arts and crafts, games,
and other programs they will participate in.
Discovery Camp can make a difference in these campers’ lives.
It also gives campers a chance to experience some of the National
Ability Center’s programs and to find an activity that may be
throughout life.
If you have a teenager with a physical disability who is ready for a
week of excitement and challenge, we also offer a week-long camp called
Camp Xtreme. This is a great camp if your child is looking for a bigger
challenge this summer. One night the campers will be sleeping under
the stars, and when they’re not camping they will be staying in the
lodge. During the day they will be doing activities such as running
rivers, hiking, riding the alpine slide, water skiing, horseback riding,
climbing on our challenge course, zipping down the Park City zip line.
If your child is interested in attending one of our camps or you
know someone who has a child wanting to attend camp, contact Jenn
Carpenter at 435-200-0987 or jenniec@DiscoverNAC.org. For more
information about our camps or the National Ability Center you can
Mission Statement
The National Ability Center is committed to the development of lifetime skills for people of
all ages and abilities by providing affordable sports and recreational experiences in a nurturing
environment. The objective of these experiences is to build self-esteem, confidence and
physical development, thereby enhancing active participation in all aspects of community life.
As a national role model, the Center promotes the concept of ability through integration, public
awareness and education.
Message From The CEO
My dearest friends,
As many of you know, this summer I will be stepping aside as CEO. We have found an
incredible person as my successor, Dale Schoon, who will begin working with me in mid-July to
begin the transition into the CEO position. Dale truly embraces our mission and brings with
him great experience in sports program management. He will be an
amazing leader for the Center!
So my dear friends, this will be my last letter to you as the “Chief.”
I move on at this time to create change in my life and in the life of the
National Ability Center. I have accomplished the goals I set many
years ago and now feel it is time for me to pursue other interests and
for others to take the Center into its future.
It has been an amazing run, and together with our participants, families, donors, volunteers
and staff, we have built an incredible place where people can grow, learn new skills and discover
the ability within. I extend my deepest gratitude to the tens of thousand of individuals with
disabilities who have inspired me with their determination and spirit throughout the past
twenty-three years. Thank you to all the families who have shared their love, their challenges and
their accomplishments – you have enriched my life more than you will ever know.
I extend my deepest gratitude to all who have given of your time volunteering in our
programs, to those who have served on our Board and to the many individuals who have worked
for the Ability Center throughout the years.
I do not move on lightly, but for everything there is a season. I will deeply miss seeing the
sense of accomplishment on the faces of our participants, young and not so young. I will miss
the hugs from the moms for the little and the big accomplishments of their children. I feel so
very honored to have been able to witness something as simple as sports make such a huge
difference in our participants’ lives. Such joy—and all the while my ability within growing too.
I promise that I will not be far away and will be here to help Dale and the Center in whatever
way I can as we move into the future. I invite you to join in my farewell celebration at A
Starry Night on September 13 at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City! I will see you
around…for sure!
Thank you for giving me such an incredible and fulfilling opportunity.
Warmest regards,
Meeche White
Camp Giddy Up
The National Ability Center’s Camp Giddy Up is in its third year and has a very busy
summer planned. Camp Giddy Up is a week-long camp for children with or without disabilities.
Camp Giddy Up campers have the opportunity to learn English
and Western riding, horse care and management, and many
other horse-related skills.
Not only will the campers improve their riding skills and
learn how to take care of a horse, they will also have the chance
to interact with the campers in the Discovery Camps—
National Ability Center’s camp for cognitive and physical
disabilities. This opportunity to mingle with peers with
disabilities is what makes Camp Giddy Up unique.
Equestrian Program Manager Raeshell Sorensen said,
“This is such a great opportunity for children to learn
horse skills in a safe and fun environment while also Wish List
learning more about the abilities of their peers who have
American express Points
disabilities.”
Camp Giddy Up is for all children who love Water ski boat
horses and for all parents who want their children to learn
real horsemanship in a safe environment and make new snow blower
friends. There are still spots open each week, so
register soon.
Participant of
the Quarter
This quarter the National Ability
Center has chosen Kelsey Delacenserie as
its Participant of the Quarter. Kelsey is
twenty years old and has been with the
National Ability Center for the last
three years.
Kelsey and her family are from
Wisconsin and heard about the National
Ability Center and all of the great
programs that we offer through Eagle
Mountain. Our organization is the reason
they moved to the Park City area, and
Kelsey has taken full advantage of the
programs offered here.
Kelsey participates in many of the
programs—horseback riding, nordic and
alpine skiing, cycling, swimming, dance
and movement class, yoga, and camping
trips. For the last two summers she has
also participated in the Ability Center’s
summer camps. Kelsey has even tried her
hand at quad rugby. She also took a ride
down the Center’s Ice Rocket at the Utah
Olympic Park. There probably isn’t a
program she hasn’t at least tried once.
Kelsey said, “I enjoy horseback riding
and skiing because I am learning to
become more independent through these
programs.”
Kelsey also said she has liked the
National Ability Center’s wide range of
opportunities that are given.
Since joining the Center in 2005,
Kelsey’s dad has noticed a big difference in
Kelsey, as well. “Her self-confidence has
improved, and she has become more
independent,” he said. “I have also found
her to be more outgoing and willing to try
new things.”
Kelsey is already signed up for a
number of programs through the summer,
and never seems to take a break from
Ability Center opportunities. For this
reason, the National Ability Center is
pleased to have Kelsey be the new
Participant of the Quarter.
Paralympic Academy
With the Summer Olympics in Beijing coming up this summer, the 2008 Paralympic
Academy was held in April. The National Ability Center and Salt Lake County Parks and
Recreation hosted this day of fun at the Salt Lake County Ice Complex and Murray Gym.
This year’s event was special for those who attended because Paralympic archer Jeff Fabry
spent the day on the archery course. He took time to talk with kids and parents about his
experiences as a Paralympian and his hopes for the Beijing games where he is favored to win the
gold medal. Jeff also showed how he shoots his bow and arrow while giving other aspiring
archers some pointers on their technique.
U.S. Paralympics sponsors Paralympic Academies around the country to give kids with
physical disabilities a chance to try different Paralympic sports for free. The children and their
families could all participate in archery, sled hockey, wheelchair basketball, cycling and quad
rugby throughout the day.
Jeff Fabry brought a lot of attention to the archery portion of the event this year, but a
number of families showed up for a fan-favorite, sled hockey. Members of the Western Sled
Hockey League Champion Golden Eagles were on hand with their trophies from the
07-08 season.
For those who missed out on this year’s Academy, there will be another chance to try some
Paralympic sports and other recreational programs at the National Ability Center’s upcoming
Community Open House on July 19th (see ad on page 3).
Housing
Shortage
As the worldwide leader in adaptive
recreational experiences, the National Ability
Center has athletes, interns and AmeriCorps
members from around the country. When
coming to work or participate here, they are
always looking for housing close to the
Center. We are asking the Park City community
to help these individuals find the
inexpensive housing they need. Many athletes
are only here for the winter season. Internships
last one semester, and the AmeriCorps
term can last from six months to one year.
If you would like to provide housing, or
if you know of housing that is available, please
Volunteer Of The
Quarter
Mike Cohen
Mike Cohen is a long-time, dedicated
volunteer at the National Ability Center. He
spends most of his volunteer hours with the
Hippotherapy program. Over the past year, Mike
has logged over 75 volunteer hours.
Recently, Mike has been a huge help when we
really needed it. He would volunteer tirelessly from
9:30 am until 5:30 pm. Mike proved to be a
lifesaver with his experience and willingness to
help. The Hippotherapy patients and their
families also love working with him. Mike
understands how much the Ability Center and the
Hippotherapy program need volunteers to run the
programs, and he is committed to helping the
Center fulfill its mission.
The Hippotherapy program is directed by
Occupational Therapist, Kim Desautels, but it is
almost impossible for her to use her abilities to
help the participants without volunteers in each
lesson. Mike has gotten familiar with many of the
participants in the program, and that makes it
much easier for them to relax when in a lesson.
The relationship of trust he has formed with some
of the participants lets him be a friend to them at
the same time he is volunteering. That trust goes a
long way to helping individual participants to
reach their goals in the program.
Thank you, Mike, for being such a superstar
and giving so much of your time and energy to our
programs!
remember!
With more than twenty
programs and 26,000
lessons, there are
always opportunities to
volunteer with us.
Adventurous
Learning
Before the snow could melt around the
Ability Center’s universal challenge course
this spring, a group from Highland High
School was already anxious to come and
participate with the Adventure Learning
Program (ALP).
Before the group arrived, ALP Manager
Kim Millikan and
her staff watched
anxiously as an overnight
spring snow
storm blanketed the
ground. The sun
didn’t come out, but
the wind blew the
snow off the course
and the students
begged to brave the
cold weather. The
group of more than a
dozen teenagers
spoke over thirty different languages among
them. They came to work on some
team-building and cooperation skills, as well
as an appreciation of each other’s strengths.
School groups like Highland’s, church
groups like Temple Har Shalom, and
organizations like the Utah School for the
Deaf & Blind or the Utah Developmental
Disabilities Council all have participated with
the Adventure Learning Program this spring.
Each group who comes through the
program sets its own goals with Kim Millikan
to make sure it will have a successful
experience. The groups may incorporate
elements from the universal challenge course,
the rock-climbing wall or any of the programs
from the Ability Center. Kim is also able to
incorporate different activitie to help groups
build communication skills or teamwork.
Last year, the Wounded Warrior Project
brought a group of veterans who were dealing
with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to
participate in a custom program. They had
such a good experience that they have already
booked space for two additional groups
this summer.
While the summer is a busy time for ALP,
there are still a few openings. The fall also has
a number of open dates and times. If your
school, church, community organization or
business would like to come participate in
ALP, give Kim Millikan a call at 435.649.3991
Rolling Along
Hand cyclers from around the country
rode with the National Ability Center’s
annual hand cycling camp with Matt
Updike and Seth Arseneau of the U.S. Paralympic
Team. Cyclists rode different routes
around the Park City area and learned about
nutrition, training and riding techniques.
While helping
out with the camp,
Matt and Seth rode
and talked with the
riders from the
camp to give them
individual suggestions
to better their
riding experiences.
The two also put in
some time helping
tune the bikes before and after the rides
each day.
Cycling program manager Sue Morgan
was excited about the camp. “This is a great
opportunity to learn from racers who’ve
competed at the highest level,” she said.
Some of the riders were new to the
camp while others were seasoned veterans
looking to get some pointers from former
and current Paralympic team members.
One rider came all the way from Maine to
participate.
After watching the first day of riding,
Sarai Morgan, the cycling program’s assistant
manager, said, “Mikayla (Briere) could very
well be the next star of the National Ability
Center.” Mikayla is from Maine, but she has
now participated in a handful of different
programs with the Ability Center. Even
though she had
never participated
in a camp like this,
she was consistently
with the lead-group
while riding.
By the time the
three-day camp was
over, there were a
lot of tired cyclists
and a few bumps,
scrapes and bruises that come with the
territory of handcycling.
The cycling program will also host its
annual Cycling Expo on Saturday, July 19th
from 10am – 3pm at the National Ability
Center. Attendees will be able to demo hand
cycles from different manufacturers from
around the country. They can also join
the cycling staff on group rides and skills
clinics.
For more information about the
National Ability Center’s cycling program,
