Upgrading and Expanding<br />
Rekindles the Passion<br />
We were feeling cramped and outdated in our low-tech, but well-cared-for 3500<br />
square foot office in Kamloops, British Columbia. The three of us, Dr. Daryl<br />
Shinkewski, Dr. Glenn Neilson, and Associate Dr. Della Summers, were looking for<br />
an upgrade in technology, and a bigger more efficient office layout. Afterall,<br />
despite several renovations, Sahali Dental Centre (our group practice name), was<br />
designed by our predecessors about 30 years ago. Rather than upgrading our<br />
established location, we decided to move to a bright, expansive 5100 square foot<br />
space on the second floor of a brand new commercial building just blocks away.<br />
Patterson was instrumental in<br />
transforming our vision into a<br />
functional, modern, high-tech<br />
layout.<br />
We started by scouring the internet and current dental publications for design<br />
ideas and to develop a list of technology upgrades we wanted in our new space.<br />
Then we sat down with Patterson designer Rick Throssell, and our local Patterson<br />
Rep Jim Belot, and discussed our office vision. Their experience and expertise<br />
was invaluable in creating a very appealing, functional design, with properly<br />
integrated technology upgrades.<br />

We wanted patients to see our state-of-the-art sterilization<br />
area, so we used a glass wall to separate it from the treatment area.<br />
All 10 operatories have large windows with a view of the surrounding mountains.<br />
Early on in the process we decided to go with A-dec equipment, because of their commitment to<br />
quality, and their wide selection of ergonomic designs. We highly recommend going to the factory<br />
showroom in Newberg, because they have all their product lines set up the way they are meant to<br />
be used. You can actually sit in your preferred operatory and “feel it out” before you buy. In one<br />
exhilarating weekend we were able to choose our entire operatory layout, delivery system,<br />
sterilization centre and cabinet/chair colours and finishes. Thank you to our Patterson Rep,<br />
Jim Belot, and our A-dec Rep, Jim Berry, for making that weekend so successful.<br />
After 3 months of construction, we opened the new Sahali Dental Centre on September 22 nd , 2009.<br />
As owners, we are totally ecstatic with our investment, and have a renewed passion for the careers<br />
we love. Both patients and staff members have told us that they really appreciate that we are<br />
keeping up-to-date with the latest equipment and technology.<br />
All of us feel revitalized, and<br />
have a renewed commitment to<br />
excellence working in a more efficient,<br />

Make it fun, comfortable<br />
and efficient!<br />
I graduated from the University of<br />
Alberta in 1995 and joined another<br />
dentist in a cost sharing agreement in<br />
an older office in downtown Red Deer.<br />
Although the practice had a great<br />
location and we were busy, I felt that<br />
the office did not truly portray the level<br />
of care that I wanted to offer our patients.<br />
When my partner announced his retirement,<br />
I decided that it was time to build the office<br />
that I had been dreaming of.<br />
Defining the needs.<br />
My vision for our new office was to construct a modern, family<br />
and child friendly facility that would be a little different than a<br />
traditional dental clinic. As I wanted to incorporate all the latest<br />
technology available, I wanted to be sure to partner with a<br />
company that had the expertise that I knew we would require.<br />
After meeting with our Patterson rep., Barb Marrinan and Branch<br />
Manager, John VanderVelden on a weekend, I knew this was a<br />
dedicated group of professionals that would do what it took to<br />
make my plans come true.<br />

I wanted our office to be a fun place for children, and<br />
having decided that I wanted a pirate ship and a pirate<br />
themed play area for our young patients, I then had to<br />
determine how to make it happen. John suggested a<br />
company that they had used in the past, Studio Y<br />
Creations, to construct both areas. They turned out<br />
better than I had hoped and they've been a huge hit<br />
with the kids (and the parents too!)<br />

Comfort and efficient.<br />
All six of our operatories have been equipped with dual<br />
monitors. Cleankeys keyboards facilitate infection control<br />
and gyration mice allow the team to maintain eye contact<br />
with patients when discussing treatment options. I was<br />
so impressed with the comfort and performance of our<br />
A-dec 500 chairs in our treatment operatories that we<br />
added them to our hygiene ops.<br />
The patient experience in our operatories is enhanced<br />
with electric handpieces, digital radiography, intraoral<br />
photography and Caesy. Perhaps my best investment<br />
was digital x-rays. If our first image is less than ideal, for<br />
example missing an endodontic apex or a wisdom tooth<br />
periapical, we don't even have to remove the sensor from<br />
the patient's mouth– we just reposition it and take<br />
another shot–very efficient!<br />

Beyond the possibilities.<br />
I have just purchased a Cerec AC and our team is excited about the possibilities it will bring.<br />
Besides doing more inlays and onlays, the convenience of one visit appointments should be<br />
a big hit with our patients. I am always concerned about having patients in temporaries for<br />
2-3 weeks and I am looking forward to having one less thing to worry about.<br />

favorite pieces of equipment in our office. Having our cassettes coming out of a cycle<br />

Round Bur Shank has Evolved<br />
The ProDrive System’s patented, triangular bur shank<br />
enables the turbine to lock the bur into place resulting in<br />

control. According to Dr. Flucke, the interesting part<br />
about the ProDrive System is that in a “round-on-round d<br />
world [friction grip] you could simply slide the bur in the e<br />
handpiece any way it would go, but in a ProDrive world it<br />
is so outstanding that you can actually pull on the bur and nd<br />
you can’t get it out, unlike friction grip you could pull the<br />
bur out.”<br />
Over 550 Premium Bur Models<br />
The ProDrive System off ers a full selection of diamond and carbide burs manufactured<br />
in Germany by Meisinger. Double grooves enable safe bur-lengthening for improved<br />
precision in diffi cult to reach areas. The locking mechanism ensures bur retention<br />
and high performance in both positions.<br />
Comparing Apples to Apples<br />

Dentists across North America participated in clinical field trials, comparing<br />
their original handpiece against the exact same handpiece upgraded with the<br />
ProDrive System. Setting up a clinical test, Dr. Flucke performed half a lingual<br />
reduction with the manufacturer original handpiece and half the lingual<br />
reduction with ProDrive. Same with the occlusal reduction, half with the original<br />
handpiece, half with ProDrive. Dr. Flucke reports “better finishing of margins<br />
and less bur chatter because the ProDrive triangular bur cuts more efficiently<br />
and spins more concentrically.”<br />

There is an obvious and powerful consensus among all dentists<br />
testing ProDrive that there were near-perfect performance<br />
results. The consensus among the panel of dentists was a<br />

The Keys To Case Acceptance<br />

I love words; they hold such meaning. Words can tell a story,<br />
create an experience and give understanding to acceptance,<br />
evoking action. I want my patients to hear me when I speak.<br />
When I explain the gravity of their disease, I want them to see<br />
their tissue, understand the risks and feel the urgency and care<br />
in my conversations with them.<br />
I’m reading this great book by Mike Lipkin; One life, One<br />
Meeting; How to Build Preeminence one Conversation at a<br />
Time. He writes; “Declare your intention. Don’t assume people<br />
know how committed you are to their success. People are not<br />
mind readers. They need to hear it over and over.”<br />
Our goal is to have our clients understand and act on the<br />
information they receive from our conversations. When we<br />
achieve this, we will have case acceptance with amazing<br />
results. The key is to use the three C’s of case acceptance.<br />
1.CONVERSATIONS / COMMUNICATION: Our verbiage,<br />
our body language, and the tools we use to make our case<br />
understood, accepted, and acted upon.<br />
• “Mr. Disease, you have heard the periodontal probing<br />
numbers. Let me show you your results and explain what<br />
that means. You have advanced periodontal disease. But<br />
the good news is we can rid your mouth of infection.”<br />
• “It is very bad for your body to have that bacteria and<br />
toxins in your mouth. It hurts your immune system and I<br />
am sure that you have read about the link to heart disease<br />
and diabetes. “We will need to have you back for 4,6 or<br />
8 1-hour appointments to scale, root plane and levage so<br />
we can get you back into health.”<br />
Our patients/clients receive information differently and need to<br />
hear the same message at least three different ways through<br />
three different mediums. Firstly, with the hygienist recording the<br />
probes; the patient needs to hear the pocket depths. This is<br />
easy and convenient with a hands-free device called the Dental<br />
R.A.T. (www.dentalrat.com), which has a voice component<br />
which allows our patients to hear and see the pocket depths,<br />
the bone loss and bleeding points. Showing them the evidence<br />
holds weight and clearly reiterates the gravity and importance<br />
of their disease.<br />
Secondly, reviewing the findings with the doctor, the complete<br />
oral evaluation places value and necessity in regards to patient<br />
acceptance.<br />
Finally, any information that is visual, that they can see from an<br />
alternative source is a huge asset for case acceptance. I like the<br />
CAESY (www.caesy.ca) multimedia patient education system,<br />
I say wow, wow, wow. This simple, easy to use technology to<br />
have for our patients to see and listen to, whether it’s home<br />
care instruction, CEREC, or perio maintenance education. I<br />
love the smile channel in the office; it’s not cheesy, it’s great,<br />
easy to listen to, informative dental education.<br />

dental status report card, or burning them a DVD off of CAESY,<br />
or sending email link for them to watch at home.<br />
Collaboration; All team members are supporting each other<br />
to give a consistent message and experience to our clients.<br />
Excellence is the ablity to deliver this quality of care from all<br />
team members 98% of the time.<br />
3. CARE-Engaged: “To involve oneself and participate; to<br />
pledge one’s word”, that’s Webster’s definition.<br />
Are you present for your patients and team? Don’t go on auto<br />
pilot; do whatever you need to keep your head in the game and<br />
be present. Listen to our patients, make eye contact, and care<br />
for each one as though they were a loved one. Don’t assume<br />
anything, except that they are going to receive, understand and<br />
act on the conversation/information they get from you.<br />
So I say, why wouldn’t we use everything that is available<br />
to deliver our message and reach our goal of patient case<br />
acceptance? Words, meaningful conversations, technology<br />
like CAESY, RAT, intraoral cameras and amazing patient care<br />
assist us, to reach our goal of patient acceptance. These are a<br />
few of my favorite things. So, “when the dog bites,when the bee<br />
stings, when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember a few of these<br />
things and then I don’t feel so bad” I don’t think this is what Julie<br />
Andrews, in the Sound of Music had in mind. However, I think it<br />
trumps brown paper packages tied up with strings.<br />

Make Technology Work for You<br />

Technology is here to stay and will continue to become<br />
more sophisticated and advanced. With many continued<br />
technological advances, it’s sometimes hard to keep<br />
up and unless your practice is fully prepared, stress<br />
and inefficiency may follow. Unfortunately, the major<br />
problem for most practices is the lack of team training<br />
in necessary technology. Dentists invest a great deal<br />
of money in technology and it’s vital that they receive a<br />
return on their investment. Equipment sitting collecting<br />
dust is a waste of money. Computers especially are<br />
under utilized to monitor the success of a practice and<br />
find out where there’s lost revenue. In addition, utilizing<br />
the computer for marketing purposes is inexpensive,<br />
fast and efficient yet rarely taken advantage of.<br />
EagleSoft by Patterson, is an excellent integrated<br />
software product and I am totally impressed with the<br />
information you can get related to practice building,<br />
monitoring stats and of course, patient education.<br />
Using Technology to Enhance Case Acceptance<br />
Dental technology has grown in leaps and bounds over<br />
the past 10 years. It’s now possible to show your patient<br />
how their smile will look after extensive treatment, a<br />
tool that most dentists only dreamed of having at their<br />
disposal in the past. Now that we have these wonderful<br />
tools available, I find that many dentists don’t use them<br />
to their fullest extent.<br />
A great example of multimedia tools is the CAESY<br />
patient education system (www.caesy.ca) which can<br />
be used in conjunction with any practice management<br />
software and is also fully integrated with Patterson<br />
EagleSoft (www.eaglesoft.ca).<br />
Imaging systems are a fantastic way for using a<br />
patient’s own photo to provide a realistic outcome of<br />
the treatment. Giving your patient this realistic view<br />
is probably the best way to show them how beautiful<br />
their own smile could be. When printing photos, put<br />
in a disclaimer that the images were produced by a<br />
computer and that final results may vary.<br />

presentation that you can make on an office computer<br />
to a patient in your consultation room. PowerPoint<br />
presentations can also be uploaded to your website<br />
for patients to download at their leisure. If at all<br />
possible, it would be nice to have a terminal with your<br />
presentations available in the greeting area for patients<br />
to look through.<br />
If each person in the office made a list of where they<br />
feel they could improve using the technology in your<br />
office from the laser, computer, cameras, internet and<br />
plan training time. Make a list of all the things you could<br />
do that would enhance your patient services. Make a<br />
list of things you could do to increase your business.<br />
Last but not least what can you do in your office to<br />
eliminate the technology headaches? Let technology<br />

Initially everyone said I could not create my visionary<br />
office because I wanted to incorporate too many<br />
different elements all in one place, but I knew we<br />
could do it. Working with a creative, professional<br />
design consultant, quality contractor and Patterson<br />
Dental, it took six months of design work, and four<br />
months of construction to make it a reality. The office<br />
has a warm and inviting atmosphere, dramatically<br />
modern design, curved walls, specially commissioned<br />
artwork, a waterfall and a castle for children to play in.<br />
And on the technical side with the help of Patterson<br />
Dental, all the dental equipment throughout the office<br />
is top of the line Sirona including digital x-ray and<br />
state-of-the art sterilization centre. We have also<br />
incorporated those little personal touches, like<br />
a patient refreshment centre, multiple TV’s, personal<br />
DVD play options and even warm towels for patients’<br />
convenience. Patients can even sign themselves in<br />
and update their personal information on the office<br />
computer system if they wish, or of course, our staff<br />
will do it for them. My goal is patient comfort,<br />
physical and emotional combined with the best<br />

Visual appeal<br />

We have all dreamed of the dental office that combines<br />
functionality, advanced technology and visual appeal<br />
for ourselves and our patients. With the help of Patterson<br />
Dental, Summit Dentistry was launched with these<br />
ideals in mind. Dr. Michael Salyzyn, principal of<br />
Summit Dentistry reflected that<br />
“After 20 years of practicing the same old procedures, day in and day out in a dated facility, it was time to<br />
embrace the future and offer our patients something unique”. Patterson was there from the onset with ideas<br />
and information. Their expertise was combined with that of a talented team of architects from Lydon Lynch<br />
of Halifax.<br />
The architects were responsible for colours/textiles/furniture and the design of the reception area including<br />
millwork. Patterson was responsible for the clinical areas. “This was an example of how two different companies<br />
can work together for a common goal” says Dr Salyzyn.<br />
The other interesting fact was that no old equipment from my previous office was utilized so that we<br />
could start with a clean design slate. The space is approximately 3600 square feet and is comprised of<br />
10 operatories. Three doctors’ ops and 3 hygiene ops were originally installed using all A-dec 500 and<br />
Cascade chairs and equipment. Each op is fully digital with Sirona sensors and Sirona Orthophos Panoramic.<br />
The addition of digital radiography has been one of the major improvements along with our Cerec AC and<br />
bluecam. We have also added a Sirona soft tissue laser and recently a ER-Yag hard tissue laser. Within six<br />
months of opening we have added two more dentists and two more treatment rooms including a Sirona C5+<br />
ambidextrous unit. “ The Sirona room is straight out of a sci-fi movie and a lot of fun to use. I will definitely<br />
look toward adding more Sirona products for our final two rooms” says Dr. Salyzyn.<br />
Although this required a considerable capital outlay, there is more enjoyment in the work day knowing that<br />
the environment and the technology enable the delivery of standard of care to be proud of.<br />
