Classic

FROM THE
PRESIDENT
Dear Friends of Holy Cross:
This Spring issue of Crossroads features
just a few highlights of the
2007-2008 school year. It is impossible,
however, for any publication to fully capture the essence of
the Holy Cross experience. Each and everyday our young men
attend school with the intention of preparing themselves with
the skills necessary to enjoy a productive and fulfilling life. This
has become an increasingly daunting task for our teachers and
students, as the world, and its expectations, is far more complex
now than it was even a decade ago. At Holy Cross we fully
understand that nothing remains the same—and that modern
life is often characterized by uncertainty which can allow for
great opportunity, and, at the same time, a deep sense of bewilderment
and insecurity within our young people.
As I have expressed so many times in the past—the thing that
makes Holy Cross truly unique is that we fully accept and realize
that educating the mind alone is not enough. We have all
witnessed highly talented and educated people who rise to
great heights, only to destroy their lives and careers as a result
of a deficit of character. So often the need to be important and
recognized overshadows the true purpose of life. As educators
we can teach our young people all the math, history, and science
there is to know—and they will still remain ignorant of
how to use it for the good of themselves and others. It is for this
reason that Holy Cross remains steadfast in its mission to educate
the “minds and hearts” of our young men—to nurture
their spirit as well as their intellectual capacity.
As you read the various features in this newsletter, I invite you to
truly appreciate and enjoy all those things which comprise the
Holy Cross experience—fine academic programs, a premier service
learning program, extracurricular activities, and a personalized
learning environment which focuses on character development.
All of these things – and much more – contribute to the formation
of the “Holy Cross Man,” who epitomizes the best ideals
of Father Basil Moreau, CSC, now honored by the universal
Church by virtue of his beatification on September 15, 2007.
Sincerely in Holy Cross,
Brother Stephen LaMendola, csc ‘67
Bequest to
Holy Cross
Board Chair, Dan Bartolomeo ’73,
interviews Marty Lenehan ‘59
DB I am certain that a great deal of thought
went into making a decision to leave such a
large bequest to your high school. Can you
explain what motivated you to do this
ML I would answer by saying, “To those who
God has given much, much is expected in
return.” Holy Cross provided me with the
structure, discipline, and education that I
needed as a young man, and now it is time to
give something back.
DB Why did you specifically select Holy Cross
for your generosity
ML Because of my deep bond to Holy Cross,
I am committed to ensuring its future and
fully understand that the school needs adequate
funding in order to do this.
DB As a member of the school’s first class, you
must have many fine memories of your time at
Holy Cross.
ML Those were very formative years for me,
and Holy Cross played a large part in my
becoming the person I am today. I also fully
understand that many things have changed
over the past fifty years. Back in 1955 when I
was a freshman, most of the teachers were
religious whose services were fully contributed.
In those days things were simpler—
there were no computers or technology labs,
and the building was brand new. I fully understand
that running a school in this century is
enormously expensive—and that tuition alone
cannot cover all the costs.
2

memory of my son, Eamonn, was a very special opportunity
for myself and my family to create a legacy in his name as well
as help other young men to obtain a Holy Cross education.
Dan Bartolomeo ’73
Board Chair
Marty Lenehan ‘59
DB Are there other changes that you have seen over the years
ML Class sizes are much smaller now, and there are scholarships
available to freshmen. In 1959 classes could be as large as
60 students. In fact, the Class of ’59 had about 350 students. Of
course, things were a lot stricter then and the dress code
required that we wear jackets and ties. That was a very different
era—today’s society is far more complex.
DB How did attending Holy Cross affect the choices that you
made throughout your life
ML The most important thing that I learned was discipline
which prepared me for a career at UPS that spanned four
decades. I started in the company at nineteen as a driver
and later moved into supervising and creating special projects.
I would most definitely attribute my success over all
those years to the values, ethics, and integrity that I learned
at Holy Cross.
DB Was there anything else that you learned
ML I learned to work very hard! In fact, while attending Holy
Cross I worked after school six days a week and full-time during
the summer to pay my tuition. This was not
unusual in those days—with many of my classmates
working almost full-time to help their families.
DB You have been very generous to Holy Cross over
the years as a major contributor to the Annual
Fund and through the establishment of the Eamonn
Lenehan Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of
your son. Can you explain your willingness to be
so generous to Holy Cross in so many ways.
ML In addition to my deep love for the school, I
would say that my parents set an example of generosity
for myself and my two brothers. Their
regular donations to our parish taught us that it
was important to give something back for our
good fortune. Opening the scholarship in the
DB In addition to your financial generosity, you also volunteer
for the school. Can you tell us a little about that
ML About a year or so ago, the Advancement Office asked me
and my brother Eddie, also a member of the Class of ’59, to
serve on the Golf Committee. We both enjoy playing golf, so
this was certainly something that we were willing to help
with. It is truly a wonderful event—a very special day—and
it is a pleasure to help obtain auction prizes and do other
fundraising for the event.
DB For the benefit of those who are considering making a
bequest to Holy Cross, can you explain the benefits of making
this type of contribution.
ML The greatest benefit is knowing that this gift will someday
make a huge difference in the lives of the students that attend
Holy Cross. In terms of tax benefits, it was obvious that it was
a far better thing to leave the funds to the school as opposed to
giving it to the government. My family will inherit a large
amount of money anyway, so it seemed like the right thing to
make a bequest to Holy Cross.
DB What did you have to do in order to make this bequest
ML All it required was a visit to my attorney to create a codicil
to my will stipulating Holy Cross as a beneficiary. This was
simple, easy, and not very expensive. Of course, I provided the
school with a copy of the document and the name of the attorney.
There are many different types of bequests—and even
trust agreements—with huge tax advantages that can be
arranged as well. Right now, this was the best way for me to
give back to Holy Cross in a meaningful way.
The Hall of Fame Award is presented by Holy Cross High School to
those unique individuals who in their private and professional
lives exemplify the Holy Cross spirit of leadership, service and
excellence. The Cross and Anchor Award is a special award presented
by both Holy Cross High School and the Brothers of Holy
Cross Eastern Province to individuals who have demonstrated
extraordinary accomplishments in a specific area or endeavor. On
the evening of November 18, 2008, the following honorees took
their place in Holy Cross history.
RADM
Kenneth Manning ‘59
“I emerged from Holy Cross intensely
focused and fully aware that I was
responsible for forging my own path.”
Ken received a degree in mechanical engineering
from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and
then served as an Ensign in the United States
Navy where he was stationed on two destroyer escorts,
finishing his service as a Lieutenant in 1967 to complete an MBA
from American University. Over the next several decades, Naval
duties and career paralleled one another. After leaving a prestigious
position at W.R. Grace in 1987, Ken joined Sensient
Technologies where he became Chairman, President, and CEO.
Under his leadership, the corporation underwent twenty-one
acquisitions, and currently operates
in 70 countries. Ken received the
Legion of Merit award in 1994, and
retired in 1995 with the rank of Rear
Admiral. Ken admits, however,
that his primary focus is his wife,
Maureen, and their six children.
Georgiana Reese
“I am so proud that the school
thinks so much of me”
Georgiana’s sincere interest in reaching out to
others lead to her rising to the level of 1st Vice
President before retiring in 2003 and becoming
New York Community Bank’s Community
Relations Consultant. Georgiana sits on at
least eight or ten Boards in Queens at any given time and over
the years she has received numerous
awards for her outstanding contributions
to the Queens community. A former
member of the Holy Cross Board of
Directors, Georgiana served as Co-Chair
of the School’s 50th Anniversary Gala
and remains a member of the school’s
Institutional Advancement Committee.
Thomas Girard ‘80
“The greatest thing about Holy Cross is
that as a 45 year-old adult I can still come back and
feel welcome and special.”
In addition to being a member of the National
Honor Society, during Tom’s senior year, he
was named basketball MVP and the school’s
most dedicated athlete. Tom majored in
Accounting at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, and earned a
Masters in Finance from Fordham University in 1990. He has
held prestigious positions in Peat
Marwick, JPMorgan, Bankers Trust,
Robeco Investment Management.,
and New York Life where he is
currently Managing Director and
Senior Portfolio Manager. “My wife,
Michele, and our children are the
greatest part of my life,” he shares
wholeheartedly.
S. Benjamin Murolo
“I am humbly honored to be a part of the
Holy Cross family which I admired from
afar as a young man at St. Kevin’s.”
After earning his CPA, Ben began his career
working at the City Comptroller’s Office, and
in 1987 joined Dale Mortgage Bankers Corp as
CFO. In 2001, Ben founded JDI Mortgage
Corp where his expertise opened his world to
many fascinating experiences. It was through Rev. Msgr. George
Deas that he joined the Holy Cross Board of Directors more than
seven years ago and became the first Chair of its Audit
Committee. Ben and his wife
Evelyn reside in Garden City
with their three children.
Although Ben’s term on the
Board has ended, he plans to
continue his relationship with
Holy Cross.
Father James Fitzpatrick
Posthumous
“He was enormously well-liked
with the students as they felt his sincere concern
for their well-being and his desire to help them
become all that they could be.”
In 1980 James Fitzpatrick joined the faculty at
Holy Cross where he became head of the
Theology Department. In 1993 he returned to his true call-
8

ing, and two years later was ordained as a priest. He was
assigned to Blessed Sacrament Parish in Cypress Hills and in 1999
became Vocation Director for the Diocese of Brooklyn and
Director of St. Paul’s Center which brought him in contact again
with Holy Cross students through the retreat
program. He contributed generously of his time
at many of the school’s religious activities—
including serving as the Principal Celebrant
and Homilist for the school’s 9/11 Memorial
Liturgy. Father Jim’s path took an unexpected
turn when he became ill in the spring of 2002,
passing away in July of 2004.
Brother
Karl J. Diemand, CSC
“He was such a formidable presence
that many people didn’t understand him, but
when you got to know him, you saw his soft
side – he was really a pussycat!”
Born in Albany, New York, Karl Diemand
entered the Congregation of Holy Cross
after high school. During his early career Brother Karl’s teaching
assignments were widespread. A graduate of Fordham
University and Villanova, he join the faculty at Holy Cross High
School in Flushing in 1965 where he ministered for thirty-eight
years until an illness forced
him to retire in 2003. Brother
Karl served as Director of
Athletics, and in his later
years, Coordinator of Sports.
He was in his 57th year of
religious life in the
Congregation when he died
on October 30, 2006 of a long illness.
Frank T. Chiarello ‘72
“Holy Cross served as a moral
compass during my formative years.”
Starting as a porter in the buildings maintained
by the company where his mother
worked, Frank acquired his real estate
license at the age of 18. After receiving a
BBA in Accounting from
Iona College, Frank held
several prestigious positions in the field of
accounting and real estate—which lead to his
founding WRAProperties--which is still
thriving today. Frank served on the Holy
Cross Board of Directors for six years where
he became the first Chair of the school’s
Institutional Advancement Committee.
Under his leadership, the school launched
the Generation to Generation Campaign and
he founded the Br. Stephen LaMendola Scholarship Endowment
for which he is actively fundraising.
Bishop Rene Valero
Become a member of the
HOLY CROSS
HERITAGE SOCIETY
“Make a Bequest to your School”
Charitable bequests allow the donor to keep and use their assets over their lifetime
while, at the same time, make a very generous contribution to Holy Cross High School.
Bequests are made by Holy Cross alumni and friends who wish to strengthen and
enhance Holy Cross’ educational experience. A bequest may be made by preparing a
new will or by adding a legal document (codicil) that amends your will.
Other things to consider regarding making a bequest:
•Abequest can be stated in many forms, such as a specific dollar amount ($10,000),
a specific asset (a house, farm, or art collection) or a percentage of an estate.
•Adonor can take full advantage of estate tax savings by creating trusts in his/her will.
• Bequests can be made for unrestricted or restricted purposes, such as endowments or
plant renovations. Holy Cross can work with donors in pointing out areas of special need.
• Bequests can be made in memory or honor of a loved one, or the donor can name the
bequest after himself/herself.
• Bequests are revocable—meaning that they can be changed during the lifetime of a donor
donor.
• Alumni and friends considering a bequest to Holy Cross are recommended to obtain
the professional counsel of a lawyer who specializes in probate and estate planning.
Other forms of Planned or Deferred Giving include: Charitable Remainder Trusts,
Charitable Lead Trusts, and making Holy Cross a beneficiary of a Life Insurance Policy.
To learn more about Planned Giving options, call or e-mail the Holy Cross Advancement Office
at 718 886-5633, develop@holycrosshs.org or fill out the attached form
and return it in the return envelope in the centerfold.
Blessed Father
Basil Anthony Moreau, csc
Founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross
Beatified September 15, 2007
Le Mans, France
Father Basil Moreau was a scholar, an educator, and a revolutionary. A
professor in the French diocesan seminary, he spent the first twelve years
of his priesthood teaching philosophy, theology, and scripture—and later
established a Society of Auxiliary Priests who were well-versed in physics,
political science, as well as economics and theology, to raise the teaching standards
in diocesan colleges and seminaries. In 1837, Father Moreau united his
association with the Brothers of Saint Joseph, founded by Father James Dujarie, and
formed the Congregation of Holy Cross, a single family of spiritual educators who established schools and
parishes throughout North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia—including Notre Dame
University in South Bend, Indiana. The guiding force for all of these educational institutions was and has been
Father Moreau’s steadfast belief in the mission of educating both the “hearts and minds” of young men.
Father Anthony Basil Moreau died on January 20, 1873 at the age of 74 in his native France, and was declared
Venerable on April 12, 2003 by Pope John Paul II as a result of close examination of this writings and life history
which demonstrated heroic goodness and faith. Two years later, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the beatification
of Father Moreau which took place at the Centre Antares in LeMans France on September 15, 2007.
