Martin N. Johansen:
More than meets the eye
by Ellen Hall
Martin Johansen has the rugged Nordic looks you might expect of a landscape and wildlife
photographer. His love for mountain hiking and biking has drawn him far from the beaten
track to observe nature in its most secret and intimate moments. A man of action who knows
when to sit still and observe, Martin’s photographs reflect his attention to the wonder of what he sees.
Martin’s publishing career
started at the age of 16 with
black and white photographs for
a Danish fishing magazine. His
articles and images have since
© Martin N. Johansen
appeared in Geo, Terre Sauvage
and other publications. His most
recent book “Atlantique Nord”
surveys Greenland, Iceland and
the Faroe Islands with text in
French and English.
For the past 10 years
Martin and his young
family have lived in
Collioure. His next book
project is about the
wildlife and landscape
of the Pyrenees from
Vallespir and Canigou
down to the coast.
Some of these images will be
part of an exhibition at the site
of Paulilles from September 1
to 26. The work of two other
photographers, Aouad Said and
Henri Colonna d’Istria, will be also
be on display
“By showing the beauty of
landscape I hope to prevent
too much development and
destruction.” In Greenland
Martin recently witnessed how
climate change has affected
the landscape and the dramatic
consequences for the way of life
And now for something
COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
“SPLIT” is the title of the exhibition
to be held from 8th – 31st
October at the CASTANGALERIE,
3 Place Gambetta, Perpignan or
at 7 Avenue du General Leclerc.
(Venue to be confirmed. Ring 04
68 340367 for details)
The photographer/ artist/sculptor
is Phil Monk. All his artistic skills are
discernable in the awesome black
and white images on show. The
resulting photographs are both
powerful and disturbing, fascinating
and unsettling.
Unique, totally original and highly
unusual, in them Phil Monk uses
his remarkable creative energy to
expose the struggle towards inner
peace. It is a great opportunity to
see them in Perpignan before they
move on to the Contemporary Art
Fair in Strasbourg from 24th – 29th
November.
