Findings of the case studies: Case study analysis identified following main factors that influence the fault-footing interactions, • The mode of faulting (normal or reverse), angle of dip (α) and amount of vertical throw (h), • Thickness of the soil (H) overlying a fault and its characteristic; angle of friction (ϕ), angle of dilation (). • Type of the foundation (isolated footings, mat foundation, piles, and caissons). • Stiffness of the foundation (flexible or rigid). • Loading of the foundation, q (heavy or light) • Position of the foundation s to the free-free fault.
It was found out that, • Rigid and continuous foundation systems (such as raft or box-type foundation) demonstrated a very satisfactory per<strong>for</strong>mance by undergoing rigid body rotation/translation. • A heavy structure lying on a rigid and continuous foundation system may <strong>for</strong>ce the surface fault rupture to diver, leading to smaller differential displacements. • Structures in the immediate vicinity of active faults proved to be capable of withstanding fault dislocations of several meters.
