Membership at the Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong><br />

Membership at the Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> combines a state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art<br />

facility with a friendly and supportive community environment. We have<br />

created a gathering place where families can engage in activity together,<br />

youth and teens can learn life and leadership skills, seniors can socialize<br />

and improve their health, and adults can find community, well-being and<br />

support.<br />

Enjoy full access to 13 facilities in King County during regular<br />

DAILY MEMBERSHIP<br />

Non-Y Members who would like one-day access to the facility must<br />

provide a valid picture ID (photograph and a birth date), complete the<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Seattle Daily Application and pay the appropriate<br />

daily fee. Photo ID required for all individuals 16 and older.<br />

PROGRAM MEMBERSHIP<br />

FACILITY IMPROVEMENT WEEK<br />

The Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> closes for one week <strong>of</strong> annual maintenance<br />

and improvements. In 2013, the Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> will be closed<br />

August 31-September 7. While we are closed, please feel free to visit any<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 12 other branches included in your <strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Seattle<br />

EVERYONE IS WELCOME<br />

The <strong>YMCA</strong> is a membership organization open to all people. The<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> welcomes women and men, girls and boys <strong>of</strong> all ages, races,<br />

ethnicities, religions, abilities and financial circumstances. <strong>Program</strong>s<br />

and branches embrace diversity, reflecting the needs and<br />

GUEST POLICY<br />

All guests <strong>of</strong> the Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong>, age 16+, are asked to<br />

provide picture ID, complete a <strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Seattle Daily<br />

Application on their initial visit, and provide ID for all future visits.<br />

FACILITY MEMBER GUEST PRIVILEGES<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Seattle Facility Members may use 12 guest passes<br />

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR PROGRAMS<br />

If you cannot afford the full cost <strong>of</strong> a <strong>YMCA</strong> program, please ask for a<br />

confidential scholarship application. Financial assistance, to the extent<br />

possible, is available to those in need thanks to the <strong>YMCA</strong> Annual<br />

Support Campaign and United Way Funds.<br />

If you have a disability, need further assistance or more information,<br />

LOST AND FOUND<br />

The <strong>YMCA</strong> is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Lost and Found<br />

items are kept at the Member Services Desk for 14 days and then<br />

donated to a charitable organization. Please remember to lock up your<br />

valuables.<br />

IDENTIFICATION<br />

The <strong>YMCA</strong> is a membership organization. Photo ID with pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> age is<br />

required for membership for all individuals age 16+.<br />

MEMBERSHIP CARDS<br />

In an effort to provide a safe place for your family, we give each<br />

member, including children, a membership card and ask that it is<br />

always used to gain admittance to any <strong>YMCA</strong>.<br />

REFUND POLICY<br />

All schedules, activities, class fees and staff may be changed or<br />

cancelled by the <strong>YMCA</strong> without notice. If the <strong>YMCA</strong> cancels a class<br />

that has a fee, a full refund or credit toward another session will be<br />

issued.<br />

100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE<br />

In keeping with the <strong>YMCA</strong> mission and our association customer service<br />

pledge, the Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a 100% money back<br />

guarantee. If within the first 30 days <strong>of</strong> membership you are not<br />

satisfied with your <strong>YMCA</strong> experience, simply cancel your membership<br />

for a full refund.<br />

INSURANCE DISCLAIMER<br />

It is the member or participant’s responsibility to provide his or her own<br />

accident and health insurance. The <strong>YMCA</strong> does not provide any such<br />

coverage for members or participants.<br />

CANCELLATION POLICY<br />

The <strong>YMCA</strong> does not require contracts. To cancel your facility<br />

membership, you must provide a minimum <strong>of</strong> 14 days written notice<br />

prior to your bank draft date. Your membership can be reinstated<br />

within 30 days <strong>of</strong> cancellation without a joining fee.<br />

MEMBERSHIPS HOLD POLICY<br />

Memberships may be put on “hold” one time per calendar year for up<br />

to 12 months. This provides an extended leave from your membership<br />

but saves you from repaying the joining fee when you return. There is<br />

a $10 monthly fee for this service. If you are unable to participate at<br />

the <strong>YMCA</strong> due to a medical condition, you may request a medical leave<br />

without monthly dues with a note from your caregiver.<br />

RETURNED PAYMENTS<br />

The <strong>YMCA</strong> reserves the right to charge a $30 service fee on all returned<br />

checks, electronic fund transfers and declined recurring credit card<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> AGE GUIDELINES<br />

In order to provide a safe and positive experience for the youth <strong>of</strong> our<br />

community, the following guidelines related to facility use by <strong>YMCA</strong><br />

members and guests apply. These guidelines apply to <strong>YMCA</strong> branch<br />

facilities and may vary from other <strong>YMCA</strong> program venues such as<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-site teen centers, outdoor facilities and camps.<br />

LOCKER ROOMS/SHOWER FACILITIES<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> age 5 and under may use the opposite sex locker room if<br />

accompanied by a supervising adult. Children 6 years and older must<br />

use the same gender locker room or family change room.<br />

EXERCISE CLASSES<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> may participate with a supervising adult if they receive<br />

instructor approval prior to the class.<br />

”Supervising individuals” are defined as persons 14 years or older. The<br />

following general guidelines apply to all youth who are not participating<br />

in a supervised, structured program while in the facility.<br />

FACILITY AGE GUIDELINES<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> ages 7 and under must have direct supervision at all times.<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> ages 8-10 must be accompanied by a supervising individual<br />

who remains in the building. The supervising individual does not have to<br />

be in the same area as the youth.<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> ages 11–13 are not required to be accompanied by a<br />

supervising individual but are subject to the age restrictions for specific<br />

areas as outlined below.<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> ages 14 and older are considered adults only for the purpose<br />

<strong>of</strong> use <strong>of</strong> the facilities and programs. They may sign themselves in and<br />

out <strong>of</strong> program areas within the facility and may participate in adult<br />

fitness classes unaccompanied by an adult. Orientation to the facility<br />

and equipment is strongly recommended.<br />

AGE GUIDELINES FOR SPECIFIC AREAS<br />

WEIGHT/CARDIOVASCULAR ROOMS<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> age 14 and older may use these areas without supervision.<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> ages 9-13 must be accompanied by a supervising adult who<br />

remains in the room and is actively monitoring the youth after<br />

completing a <strong>Youth</strong> & Parent Fitness Orientation. <strong>Youth</strong> age 8 and<br />

under are not permitted in weight/cardiovascular rooms.<br />

POOL (RECREATIONAL SWIM TIMES)<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> age 7 and under must be accompanied by a supervising individual<br />

who is present in the pool area. All youth under 14 years <strong>of</strong> age are<br />

subject to swim testing and the applicable restrictions based on<br />

swimming ability which may include an adult accompanying the child in<br />

the water. During <strong>Family</strong> Swim, all youth under the age <strong>of</strong> 14 must be<br />

accompanied by an adult in the water.<br />

HOT TUB<br />

Children age 5 and under are not permitted in the hot tub. <strong>Youth</strong> ages<br />

6-13 must be supervised by an adult who is also in the hot tub.<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> CODE OF CONDUCT<br />

The <strong>YMCA</strong> is committed to providing a positive atmosphere that is<br />

safe and inclusive to all in our community. In order to ensure this, the<br />

<strong>YMCA</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Seattle has adopted a code <strong>of</strong> conduct to govern the<br />

actions and behavior <strong>of</strong> all individuals while in our facilities and while<br />

participating in <strong>YMCA</strong> programs.<br />

All individuals using the Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> facility are expected<br />

to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the <strong>YMCA</strong> Core<br />

Values <strong>of</strong> caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Failure to do so<br />

may result in immediate dismissal from the premises and may result in<br />

termination <strong>of</strong> membership privileges.<br />

Running Group<br />

If you enjoy running or are interested in becoming a runner and need help<br />

getting started, we have a group for you! The running group is open to all<br />

ability levels. Group will be led by Y Staff and volunteers.<br />

Spend a wonderful day with friends and fellow Y members as we travel to<br />

the largest Lavender Festival in North America! This beautiful festival hosts<br />

Recreation Swim<br />

Rec Swim is for all ages. Children 5-years-old and younger must<br />

be accompanied by an adult in the water. Children under 14 must<br />

either pass a swim test or be accompanied by an adult.<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> get to be active, have fun and learn principles <strong>of</strong> a healthy<br />

lifestyle in this water fitness class just for tweens. A variety <strong>of</strong><br />

equipment and activities are used. Swim skills not required.<br />

Hot Tub<br />

Seats up to 7 individuals comfortably with temperatures between<br />

100-103 degrees. Children under the age <strong>of</strong> 6 are not allowed in<br />

the spa and children between the ages <strong>of</strong> 6 and 13 must be<br />

accompanied by an adult or teen <strong>of</strong> at least 14 years <strong>of</strong> age.<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> Swim Lessons<br />

Classes are divided into ability groups. Students learn at different<br />

rates and are usually in each level more than once. Trained<br />

instructors emphasize personal safety, swimming skills, endurance,<br />

and social skills, while guiding students with encouragement.<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> Swim Lesson Levels<br />

Parent/Child 1 & 2<br />

Ages 6 to 36 months<br />

An introduction to aquatics for parents with their children. This class<br />

focuses on water adjustment and basic swimming skills.<br />

Pikes & Parent/Pike Ages 3-5<br />

This beginner class focuses on safe pool behavior, adjusting to the<br />

water, and independent movement in the water. Parent/Pike classes<br />

teach parents about assisting their children in the water.<br />

Eels Ages 3-5<br />

This level is for kids who are comfortable submerging their face in the<br />

water. Children should be able to paddle on their front, back and side<br />

for 15 feet without support.<br />

Rays Ages 3-5<br />

Children review previous skills, improve strokes, build endurance by<br />

swimming on their front and back, and learn to tread water.<br />

Starfish Ages 3-5<br />

This level reviews previously learned skills. The focus <strong>of</strong> the class is<br />

to increase endurance and independence.<br />

Polliwog Ages 6-12<br />

Beginning level for 6-year-olds. This class focuses on water<br />

adjustment, basic skills, use <strong>of</strong> flotation devices, and floating.<br />

Guppy Ages 6-12<br />

Students continue to build upon basic skills without the aid <strong>of</strong> a<br />

flotation device. Kids are introduced to the breaststroke and<br />

backstroke.<br />

Minnow Ages 6-12<br />

In this intermediate group, kids further refine the lead-up strokes.<br />

This class focuses on defining paddles into strokes and teaching the<br />

basics for breaststroke and elementary backstroke.<br />

Fish Ages 6-12<br />

At this level, students work to perfect their strokes. They are also<br />

introduced to the butterfly stroke.<br />

Flying Fish Ages 6-12<br />

At this advanced level, students work on refining their strokes and<br />

increasing their endurance.<br />

Shark Ages 6-12<br />

The most advanced level. Sharks can perform all strokes confidently<br />

with strength and endurance.<br />

Scooters<br />

You may drop your child <strong>of</strong>f at Kids’ Corner or Adventure Zone up to<br />

90 minutes before their swim lesson begins and Y staff will escort<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> & Parent Fitness Orientation<br />

This is a required orientation for youth ages 9-13 who want to<br />

work out with an adult/guardian. <strong>Youth</strong> will learn how to use<br />

age-appropriate equipment while also learning the rules <strong>of</strong> the<br />

weight room. <strong>Youth</strong> who have not taken an orientation will not be<br />

permitted in strength training and cardio rooms at the <strong>YMCA</strong>.<br />

ACT! Ages 8-11 & 12-14 <strong>Family</strong> Wellness Studio<br />

ACT! (Actively Changing Together) is <strong>of</strong>fered in partnership with<br />

Seattle Children's Hospital and helps overweight youth and their<br />

families establish healthy eating habits and incorporate physical<br />

activity into their daily routines. It is an interactive, supportive<br />

12-week program that meets once a week.<br />

Children must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) <strong>of</strong> 85% or higher for<br />

their age and have a doctor’s referral to register for the program.<br />

Choose one day, multiple days, or a whole week <strong>of</strong> Breakfast Club.<br />

Participants will take part in a variety <strong>of</strong> enriching options<br />

designed to supercharge their brains, jumpstart their bodies and<br />

build a sense <strong>of</strong> community before school begins. Each class is<br />

intentional, experiential, and dynamic so all youth participants<br />

KIDS UNIVERSITY Grades K-6<br />

Kids University is an afterschool recreation program <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

themed educational and/or physically active classes to elementary<br />

students.<br />

Kids U is a great way for children to laugh, have fun and meet<br />

new friends after the school day. Kids U gives you the ability to<br />

individualize your child's experience by choosing classes he/she will<br />

most enjoy. You may choose one class or multiple classes on one or<br />

more days <strong>of</strong> the week.<br />

Soccer/Basketball - Kids learn the basics <strong>of</strong> soccer and<br />

self-discipline through moving meditation, make Star Wars<br />

inspired art, and discuss peaceful conflict resolution. Prior<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> Star Wars is not necessary!<br />

Games <strong>of</strong> Strategy - Whether it’s Chess or Stratego, kids work on<br />

strategy and skill.<br />

DIY Crafts - Projects include holiday card making, jewelry making,<br />

sewing, fashion design and so much more!<br />

Hockey/Dodgeball - It’s time to grab your sneakers and learn the<br />

basics <strong>of</strong> hockey and dodgeball. Kids are divided into age<br />

appropriate groups to ensure every skill level is covered.<br />

Homework Help - Power through your homework! Staff help and<br />

provide fun learning games and brainteasers.<br />

Music (School <strong>of</strong> Rock/Soundbridge) - Enjoy music This is<br />

definitely the class for you!<br />

Y-Fitness - Join a <strong>YMCA</strong> instructor in Zumbatomic, Yoga, Rock<br />

Climbing, and more! Make friends and get healthy!<br />

Around the World in a Day - Get out your passports! Participants<br />

spend each class visiting a new country and learn basic words and<br />

phrases in different languages.<br />

Slimy Science - Create things that are squishy, slippery and slimy!<br />

Leaders in Training (LIT) get to participate in one or more <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Counselor in Training (CIT) weeks as a summer camp counselor,<br />

gaining real life and on the job training.<br />

activities ranging from cooking, fitness, sports, arts/crafts,<br />

Tweens and teens hang out and have fun in a safe and supervised<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> And Government Grades 9-12<br />

The mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> & Government (Y&G) is to teach Democratic<br />

values and skills to youth through hands-on experiences. The<br />

delegation meets at the Dale Turner <strong>Family</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> throughout the<br />

year and learns how to research public policy issues, write mock<br />

legislation, speak in public, debate, and work together to achieve<br />

a goal. Students travel to Olympia in Spring.<br />
