CAL 8TH GRADE GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY CONTINUES WINNING WAYS! CAL 3 - Meyzeek 0 This was a second round tournament game at CAL and the 8th grade girls did not disappoint. They jumped on Meyzeek quickly with a goal from Taylor Curran early in the game. At halftime, the lady Centurions held onto their 1-0 lead - in large part due to very Good goalie play by Meyzeek. In the second half CAL took control with goals by Allie grace Joyner and Ella Loyd. Katie Jenkins had a great backhand assist across the circle to Ella for the final goal in route to the 3-0 win…just how Coach Cooper and Coach Joyner drew it up. SKILLFUL STICKS, SUFFOCATING STOPS, & SOLID SCORES SEND SEVENTH GRADE SQUAD TO CITY SEMIS! CAL’s 7th Grade Field Hockey squad opened the post season tournament with an impressive team effort against Noe Middle School. Steady, methodical attacks and a stifling defense led to a 6-0 win, and a slot in the City’s Final Four against Kammerrer. Once again last Thursday afternoon, CAL’s defenders and mid-fielders repelled every attempted advance by the opposing attackers, and CAL’s relentless offensive pressure kept most of the game in or around CAL’s scoring circle. Crisp passing between forwards led to numerous scoring chances, with a half dozen resulting in goals. On defense, goalie Sam Minrath never faced a Noe shot, and CAL’s defenders never gave up a penalty corner chance to Noe. CAL’s stingy defense was led on the point by Tori Haygood and Mackenzie Mellen, with Emily Warlick also contributing from the back line. CAL’s six goals included two outside drives, two scrambles, and two breakaways. The outside scoring drives were by Claire Thomas on a feed from Jamie Wright, and Wright on a penalty corner insert from Rachel Proffit. The scrambles included Elise Stivers cleaning up on a corner play; and Wright and Thomas teaming up for the game’s opening goal. The breakaway goals featured Alex Walker feeding a crisp pass to Stivers, who drove it home; and Sloan Redding with a nifty crossing feed to Anna Lee Holland for the score! Most impressive in this game was the solid team play by all of CAL’s girls. The passing and tackling skills, offensive and defensive positioning, and on-field communication added up to one of the best displays of teamwork this year. Another effort like last week’s will be needed on Friday night, when CAL faces a tough and improving Kammerrer squad on their home View field.
