Pioneering a New Medical Curriculum The School has ambitious aims to redefine both medical education and research. Starting a new medical school gives us the chance to innovate and introduce best practices of medical programmes around the world. The LKCMedicine curriculum, adapted from Imperial but designed to ensure relevance to the Singapore population and healthcare system, aims to lay a firm foundation in the basic medical sciences while providing students with a high quality clinical experience. The curriculum emphasises the clinical relevance of the basic sciences and students will have patient exposure from the beginning of the programme. The programme content is designed around three themes, each of which contains key fundamental subjects and topics. THEME 1: Scientific Basis of Medicine This theme includes the basic sciences underpinning normal and abnormal human structure and function, related scientific disciplines and biomedical engineering, including computer science. THEME 2: Clinical Management and Patient-Centred Care An overarching theme throughout the course will be that of enhancing patient care through acquisition of clinical skills, professionalism, shared decision-making and effective communication, including strategies for dealing with linguistic and other communication barriers. THEME 3: Healthcare Delivery and Professional Standards This theme will include ethics, law and professionalism, health service policy and leadership, business management, and evidence-based medicine. The five-year programme is divided into three phases: Phase 1 (Years I and 2), Phase 2 (Years 3 and 4) and Phase 3 (Year 5). OUR COURSE HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: • Earlier and more extensive exposure to patients and clinical environments than in most traditional medical programmes • Extensive use of Simulation, Team Based Learning and eLearning that enhance learning and better prepare students for real clinical situations • Clinical learning opportunities and exposure across the full range of healthcare delivery environments in Singapore • A Long-Term Patient Project in Years 1 and 2 of the programme that gives students a more realistic view of disease progression and the effect on patients • Weekly self-selected Project Time in Years 3 and 4 that encourages development of students’ research, clinical and other investigative interests and skills • Choice of Selectives, overseas Electives plus Rotational Doctoring that refine students’ advanced clinical skills in Year 5 of the programme
Research in Translational Medicine for Best Patient Outcomes Solving the puzzle of complex diseases, from diabetes to mental health requires a holistic understanding of the interplay between factors such as genetics, diet and lifestyle, environment, behavior and social structures. The healthcare of tomorrow will require a truly systems approach to caring, monitoring, predicting and intervening of the individual’s health ecosystem. Here, at LKCMedicine, medical education and research form our twin pillars for academic excellence. We train not only the best clinicians with our innovative curriculum, but also spearhead research and medical innovations that will improve patient outcomes and transform healthcare. Our integrated research strategy draws on Imperial’s and NTU’s track record of reaping synergies between medicine, science and technology. Our research strategy comprises four research themes: • Metabolic Disease including obesity, diabetes and nutrition • Infectious Disease including malaria and drug resistant bacterial infections • Neuroscience and Mental Health including dementia and stroke • Dermatology including pigmentation and skin disease The four themes are underpinned by cross cutting activities in Bioengineering, Structural Biology and Health Services Outcome Research. We aim to develop the research themes into internationally competitive programmes, well integrated into the Singapore research and clinical ecosystem. Our graduate students will have ample opportunities to work with world-class clinician and research scientists to develop cutting-edge basic and translational biomedical research. LKCMedicine’s Yunnan Garden campus will reside in NTU’s biomedicalengineering cluster and linked to the School of Biological Sciences to catalyse research alliances. LKCMedicine graduate students will also be able to engage and collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students of NTU’s engineering, sciences, business, and humanities colleges. Additionally, LKCMedicine’s Novena Campus puts the graduate students in close proximity to established healthcare institutions – Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National Neuroscience Institute, Communicable Disease Centre and National Skin Centre – creating an enabling research network and multiple opportunities for leading edge patient-oriented scientific, medical, and clinical research.
